MILA WORKING ON HER OFF LEASH RECALL WITH DOG DISTRACTIONS. Mila's main reason for her board and train stay with me is that she's happy to blow off known commands around distractions, especially recall. After introducing her to an ecollar and consequences for not listening, she's now starting to be a reliable off leash girl and now she can have fun AND listen!

Just got off a video call with one of my favourite puppy client's parents! They are so on top of training their puppy, he could not be more set up for success. Winston is doing fantastic with drillwork, supervised socialization, and structure. We can't wait to keep watching you grow and learn buddy!

DOG FRIENDS. This video is far from the reality of how my dogs actually are "socially" with other dogs. This is a video of them playing on the farm with 2 of their friends that they have known since they were puppies. I have not socialized my dogs with random dogs as they grew up, because for the most part I do not trust other people's control over their dogs. My own personal dogs are actually pretty under socialized compared to your average dog, and are not particularly good with dogs they don't know. They only have a handful of 'dog friends' and I am more than okay with that. Your dog doesn't have to love every dog. Your dog doesn't (and as far as I'm concerned shouldn't) have to function at a dog park. Your dog should however be neutral around other dogs, provided they are leashed and giving space, and should be able to coexist with other dogs in your home. As I've said many times they don't need to play or even be "friends", they just need to be able to exist in the same space, while also respecting eachothers space.

Mila, my excitable 8 month old board and train working SO HARD at her place/down stay with dog distractions- her biggest temptation! A couple things are going on here; a) she's required to hold her place/down-stay even with a dog walking past her and b) me saying "yes!" or anything really in any tone doesn't mean anything unless I say her release word which means she can break her last given command.

DOWN STAYS. Even before I had boarders in my house my dogs were required to do down stays in my home, meaning they do not free roam while "loose" in my house. There are many reasons for this, a few of them being; a structured down stay is mental stimulation, it creates a huge sense of self control, it teaches coexistence, it prevents them from wandering and finding a place to go to the bathroom in my house (especially useful for puppies), it prevents them from destructive/dangerous behaviour etc. All of my board and trains are also required to do down stays in my home. This creates massive structure in their life, that especially with aggressive dogs, is necessary for positive results. Although Mila isn't aggressive, she is extremely excitable around other dogs and drags her owners around on walks to try to meet EVERYBODY. She also blows off known commands if there are any distractions. Teaching Mila to coexist and follow through on commands with my own personal dogs around is HUGE for her training moving forwards. As I've said before in my posts, dogs (even same household dogs) DO NOT need to play or even interact. All they need to do is coexist. That keeps everyone safe.

"LEAVE IT" has to be one of the most important commands you can teach your dog. There are 2 important parts of this command. Part 1 is MOVE AWAY from whatever it is. Part 2 is to DISENGAGE. In this video you can see me demonstrating the leave it command with one of my own personal dogs. Although she immediately moves away from the cat, when the cat starts moving she becomes very interested/fixated on her again (even though she doesn't move from her distanced position). Typically, I do not repeat commands as it can teach your dog that they then do not have to do whatever it is that you want them to do, the first time you ask them. However, my dog had already moved away and disengaged, even just for a split second. I repeated the command to get her to move further away, and after doing that you can see she's now disengaged and waiting for me to give her more instructions. Does your dog move away AND disengage if you say "leave it"?!

Does your dog comfortably wear a muzzle if they have to? Neither of my dogs have a bite record, however they are both muzzle conditioned on the off chance it is ever necessary for them to wear one. They have never threatened to bite anyone. I have two muzzles readily available in their sizes so that if a vet/groomer/dog parent ever requests that they would feel more comfortable with my dogs wearing muzzles they would do it no problem. Have your dog ready for real life.

Let's talk about the PLACE command. All my board and trains (and my own two) are required to do HOURS of down stays in a PLACE command daily. This is a key exercise in terms of self control and brain stimulation. None of the dogs in my house are allowed to free roam my home. They get plenty of exercise outside on the farm throughout the day, however when they are in my house they are in a down stay/place command on their bed- or they are crated if I'm not around to supervise. Dogs left to do what they want in their home typically get into things they shouldn't and/or go to the bathroom in the house. Free roaming also gives dogs the idea that they can do what they want, and make their own (typically bad) decisions. Most of my board and trains come to me with a bite record- not due to abuse/neglect etc- due to thinking they are in charge of the house because they have had the freedom to make their own choices. Which in turn gives them the idea that they can try to bite someone (typically their owner) if they infringe on their rights to do what they want or ask them to do something they don't want to do.

Alumni update! Win came for a nail trim and grind this evening and was a Rockstar! His family has been following protocol perfectly and he's doing fantastic at home with STRUCTURE and BOUNDARIES. This makes him a dog that can go places and function, without feeling like he needs to be reactive, as they advocate for him and his space and he knows that they won't put him in an uncomfortable situation. Him and Scooby (the black poodle in the first picture) both came to me pretty seriously reactive to dogs and people and when they "met" today neither of them said a word, because they know I advocate for them and their space. What an awesome evening, I couldn't be more proud of these dogs!

All of my board and trains are required to co exist with my own personal animals! I advocate for their space and nobody is allowed to interact with them, however they are required to just hang out and not be reactive. Scooby came to me dragging his owners on the leash and being reactive towards people and animals. He's working so hard at following the rules now that they've been made clear to him.

Scooby working in my house. This dog hasn't bitten anybody yet, but is happy to snap and growl at his owners if things aren't going his way. How do we deal with that? As per my training program, dogs who are displaying bad behaviour (and really most dogs regardless) require MASSIVE STRUCTURE. This dog is on a leash in my home at all times- unless he is in his crate- and he is required to heel, sit, and respect thresholds such as doorways (including crate doors) meaning an open door doesn't override training commands. He is expected to stay in his last named command until he is released from said command. He's doing awesome and should be able to go back home and be far more functional very quickly.

Scooby the 1.5year old stardand poodle is here for a 2 week board and train! Probably my last board and train before the new year. Scooby is with me to work on his manners in general, as well as working through some pretty serious resource guarding issues (over the youngest child in the home). He hasn't bitten anybody (YET) however he does show his teeth and snap at his owners if things aren't going according to his agenda. He also drags his owners down the street and they have a terrible time trying to walk him. His owners are being proactive as they have two children in the house and don't want this behaviour to escalate any more than it already has. Welcome Scooby!

Win went home today after his 2 week board and train! This dog came to me very insecure, and highly reactive to people/animals he didn't know, and any sudden changes in the house even with people he does know. He has a 3 person bite record and although he is tiny and adorable that makes him a very serious dog. Here he is working on MASSIVE structure in my home including working around my two in a down stay as added distractions. Can't wait to keep up with your progress Win ❤
