Why do guinea pigs need a large enclosure when they are small in size?
โข Guinea pigs who donโt have the space to exercise have a higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, bumblefoot etc. When they are housed in a large enclosure, they can exercise whenever they need without having to rely on you giving them floortime. (NOTE: You should not be putting wheels in their enclosures to make up for the lack of space! Their bones are very fragile)
โข Guinea pigs also need stimulation. How would you feel if you were to permanently live somewhere the size of your bathroom without anything to do? Doesnโt sound fulfilling right? Your guinea pigs feel the same way! They are less active when placed in a small enclosure because there is nothing to do! Providing a large living space with tunnels, hides and other toys will provide them enrichment.
โข Believe it or not, larger enclosures are easier to clean! They would have more space to poo & pee therefore you clean less frequently! I suppose a 1x2ft enclosure would get soiled after a day or 2 of use for one piggy, whereas a 2x4ft enclosure would take around 4-5 days for one piggy to soil.
