Meet Doug! He made a long journey from the streets of Albania to his new home in Colorado. Given his early circumstances, he is a truly wonderful dog and just needs some guidance walking on leash, respecting boundaries, and learning to relax and not react to other dogs on walks. He has a great bond with his human and they made a ton of progress in just one session. 🐾🐾

This lovely boy is learning impulse control, how to walk nicely on leash, and how to direct his drive into more appropriate outlets (as well as how to turn drive off and relax when needed). We love our GSD clients! 🐾🐾🎓

This cutie pie is a ball of unfocused energy and is almost literally bouncing off the walls!

Our first training session revealed how smart she is and how much she enjoys working and having tasks to focus on.

Her humans will be working with her on impulse control, fine tuning the cues she knows, and adding more obedience through improved communication.

During the first lesson she was able to start working with her owner and improving her focus and engagement.

They are starting on the building blocks of clearer communication and relationship-building.

They are going to make a great team and I'm excited to see how they blossom together!

Leash reactivity is one of the most common issues people struggle with. Controlled training sessions help tremendously and I was honored to be a part of this giant boy's first walk with another dog (one that he blew up at and went after weeks prior).

We started with space and patience and had great success in just one session! The neighbor who helped us did fantastic and the dogs and humans benefitted so much! Everyone was focused and on point!

We challenged the dogs, but in a slow, consistent and fair way that minimized stress and resulted in success.

Facing challenges is necessary for growth. When we work with our dogs and show them how to get through their challenges, we build a ton of trust from them and make it so much easier for them to build confidence and make better choices. It takes work, but expands the dogs' lives so much and actually reduces their stress and anxiety if done properly. This type of work fills my heart! 🐾💕🐾

A couple weeks ago I attended the Dog Training Workshop Tour presented by Jay Jack, Joel Silverman and Larry Krohn. It was an amazing experience covering three very different training perspectives. Joel was so kind and calm and his methods added to my knowledge of trick training and animal actors. Jay taught in-depth methods for using play in training, and Larry has a ton of great information for those of us who train pet dogs and their owners. They are three guys who care tremendously about dogs and helping other trainers and owners. Individually and together they have a plethora of knowledge. The humor was also top notch lol. So glad I attended. 👌 🐾🎓

I am very excited to be attending the Joel Silverman, Jay Jack, and Larry Krohn training tour workshop this Friday through Sunday. Continuing education is very important to Dogs Evolved as we strive to have knowledge of a vast array of tools, methods, and philosophies within the field. Please be aware that we may take longer at returning messages during this time. Picture: one of our favorites client dogs out having fun on one of our training/enrichment walks.

Had the pleasure of being a part of a lovely wedding as Pet Attendant yesterday. All the day-to-day training leading up to the event definitely helped this girl rock it and enjoy the event. Training Between The Ears and Behavioral Downs have made a huge difference for this lovely gal. So heart warming that she was able to be a part of the big day!!

A common root cause of behavioral issues in dogs is a lack of physical and mental stimulation. This is especially true if you have a working breed. Whether it's walks, hikes, tug, tricks, fetch, agility, flirt pole (as shown here), etc., there are a lot of options to give your dog a job and release some energy. Training can and should be implemented in all activities, such as practicing out/drop it, leave it, sit/stay, as we worked on here with this lovely gal.

We offer enrichment activities, hikes, trick training and more if you need help getting some of these activities in. And when dogs board with us, we include plenty of enrichment activities specific to each dog's unique temperament. 🐾🐾 www.dogsevolved.com 🐾🐾

Here's a short video about being cautious using aversives with fearful dogs and puppies. It includes a great explanation of how every dog is different and how something that is effective for one dog is not effective for all. In fact, something that is aversive to one dog, may actually be a reward for another (water is a great example of this). This is why the two extreme philosophies of dog training (only using aversives in training or only using rewards) doesn't work. Just with all things in life, the best results often come with a balanced approach. When it comes to dog training, the temperament of each individual dog is going to be the most important factor in the training approach. One size does not fit all.

Some of you have heard me talk about Training Between the Ears (TBTE). Their methods focus on a key component that a lot of training fails to address - the underlying emotional state that causes problematic behaviors. We implement TBTE as a part of our own training and are happy to announce that we are now an affiliate of TBTE. They have some great online courses that we highly recommend. We know that training can be expensive, and while in-person training is often needed, online courses can help with some of the fundamental training concepts. TBTE's "Six Days to a New Life with Your Dog" is a fantastic course that introduces some basics of training all for under $10. Please check out their courses at the link below and pass on to anyone who might benefit. There are a lot of dog training courses out there and we can attest that TBTE offers quality courses that get results!

I made a promise to myself to get more free content out to my clients and subscribers! So here is our latest blog post about the Grade School Level in dog training and the important role it plays in achieving successful results. Working with this cute gal because she recently bit her dog walker. We are building trust with her by:
- listening to what she is communicating through body language
- taking our time getting leashed up to keep her under threshold
- no direct head-on approaches or eye contact
- some KONG peanut butter and treats

When a dog has fear-based human reactivity/aggression, you have to go at their pace to build that initial trust. Pushing this dog beyond her threshold with new people will 100% result in a bite.

We are on training walk #3 and have made significant progress. Now that she's more relaxed, we are working on some structure during the walk. Some dogs who don't have structure and boundaries can become anxious because they feel they have to take on the leadership role. Basic obedience, along with structure and boundaries can work wonders. With this gal, we're focusing on rewarding for engagement during walks and for coming when called (not only as one of the most important commands for safety reasons, but to get her comfortable approaching me on her own and getting big rewards for doing so). Also, no more doing whatever she wants the whole walk.

Fear-based reactivity/aggression is one of my favorite things to work on. It takes a lot of patience and expertise reading body language, but is extremely rewarding when you have breakthroughs. 🐾❤❤🐾

We offer training-based walks if you or anyone you know has a fearful, reactive or difficult dog that needs a little extra guidance and is too challenging for the typical dog walking service. We work to get them back on track with regular walking services when possible.

About Us

The philosophy at Dogs Evolved is that each dog, owner, and situation, all come together to create a unique case that requires in-depth evaluation and an individualized approach. One size does not fit all, so we seek to utilize the methods that work best for the individual owner and dog. Dogs Evolved has a passion for helping dogs and humans achieve the best relationship possible through a balanced approach to training. We have knowledge of both traditional and positive reinforcement methods, resulting in a wide range of methods and tools to fit the needs of each individual case. We use the least intrusive, minimally aversive approach (in accordance with the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers) to determine and use the least intrusive intervention which will effectively achieve the target behavior. Foundational obedience work is reward-based using positive reinforcement. Dogs Evolved is committed to continuing education and lifelong learning as research and techniques evolve in the training profession. Our lead trainer is a graduate of the FernDog Trainer Academy, a participant of the client experience for trainers through Pavlov Dog Training, and shadowed with Front Range K9 Academy and The Loyal Hound. She is also Canine and Feline CPR and First Aid Certified.

Dogs Evolved is devoted to helping set both owners and dogs up for a successful and rewarding life-long relationship. We are sensitive to the situations and struggles that our human clients experience (we’ve been in those shoes), do not judge for what an owner has or has not previously done with training, and approaches each case with care and compassion. Our goal is to help clients discover new and better ways to communicate with their dog(s) and build the best relationship possible with their canine companions.
