I told my husband the other day, “I’m going to do this and this.. it shouldn’t take that long.” And then followed up with, “I really have to stop saying that.”
If you know anything about farming, that’s a set up for disappointment especially when you’re a newbie. This photo is me surrendering to my own expectations of how fast bed prep should have taken. Obstacles keep coming (mostly in the form of hidden sandstone boulders under the soil that take time to unearth.
Here I am. Kneeling. Resting. Surrendering. And then starting again. Thankful for this shovel every single day and that there is an end to sandstones in sight.

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred sandstones.. 😂
Still a lot of work to be done on these three beds before putting up our tunnels.. tomorrow we’ll be adding to the top layer after doing a final leveling job. As for now, I’m just happy to be done with the excavation of these massive sandstones!

It’s month five on this adventure to starting up Wits End and it has been an absolute doozy and I thought it would be good to share where we are in the process of launching this dream. As I’m sure you are aware, January 2020 I left a career in retail to begin Wits End. The timing in my eyes couldn’t have been more perfect even though it wrecked me in so many ways. After writing my business plan I pitched to a local economic development center and received an approval for my micro loan application. I was absolutely THRILLED. To have someone outside of yourself believing in you and willing to invest in your abilities is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. I bought champagne and my husband and I toasted to my success — I was on top of the world!
Little did I know that Covid-19 would hit front and center on the global stage demanding funds to keep existing businesses alive and my dream taking a back burner for the next two months and into the foreseeable future.
I know that this has devastated so many families, businesses, and the world. It is devastating me as well.
There are moments when I feel like this must be a sign that I’m on the wrong path and to find my way back into the retail world I left behind where it is comfortable and familiar.
And there are days where I can feel myself getting grittier, my chin lifting a little higher, and gumption swelling in my chest.
This is the most difficult thing I’ve been invited to participate in with all of its unknowns and I have been more emotional in this season than ever before. I still don’t know when we will get started but I’m still holding on.

No words can be said to satisfy what’s happening in this new world we find ourselves in. Why add to the noise?
To those still listening I encourage each one of you to get outside of yourself during this time. It has definitely helped us during this isolation.
Providing groceries for someone in need. Doing lawn work for a neighbor who may be unable to pay their lawn service or incapable of doing it themselves. Walk your dogs and chit chat with someone in your neighborhood that you’ve never met (at a safe distance). Send a dear friend a letter in the mail and tell them just how much you admire them and value their friendship. Talk to your mom for hours because you have unlimited time.
These are just a few examples of things that cultivate the soul. These are just a few things that we have been grateful to participate in and each of them have given more to us than they have required of us.
We can view this moment in life and history with the heart of a critic - adding our judgements while shaking our heads or we can take a moment to breathe as humans. Rest. Reconnect with priority and turn towards what actually sustains and gives life. For us — our mission — to lift others. We can’t do that with food yet so we will do it with what we have — hands and feet with beating hearts.

I love this principle. To get to the root of the issue you’re facing as a farmer — ask why five times.
“Interestingly, almost all little children do this by instinct — they ask why repeatedly, out of an insatiable desire to understand root causes — yet adults generally find the practice tiresome and annoying.”
Above are a couple of examples of how this practice can help you mitigate problems and waste (either wasting time or resources) on your farm.

My heart goes out to every human being impacted by the shape the world is in right now. I feel grateful knowing that being in relationship with nature gives me more peace than most have the opportunity in their profession. I am grateful knowing that farm life no matter the circumstances is in its own right stressful and yet provides such avenues of peace that don’t exist in corporate environments. My hope for human kind is that we all, in our various and diverse ways connect with those around us that we’ve been starved from with the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. May we use this time of “social distancing” to bring us back to what matters most to being human, vulnerable community.
And to all my farmer friends feeling the pressure of this economic crisis, may you find peace in this adversity and strength in perseverance.

Our magnolia tree is about to make its spring debut and the fill the air with the most beautiful fragrance.
I saved this little baby from dying a couple years ago when we bought our house in . It was so sad and leaning over to reach for sun. A little transplanting in the right spot and this year it’s in bloom. I’d say that’s a garden win! Can’t wait to see how beautiful it becomes!
