Lindsay's Langshans Breeding sustainable standard quality large fowl Langshans for exhibition, youth, hobbyists, eggs, and meat. I'm NPIP approved, and will travel to shows.

The Langshan is a fantastic and rare breed of chicken, it's dual-purpose, gentle nature combined with stunning looks make this bird a real showstopper. Currently i have black large fowl, but will have the white variety for sale soon. The Langshan is the most active aisatic breed, an excellent mother, and the roosters are calm. Raising poultry is a fun and rewarding experience!

Rip Stalvey posted this on Poultry Keepers 360 originally posted by Bissonnette Acres and I am sharing it here too.

Something we all might need to be reminded of from time to time. Not likely the Breed Standards will change so we need to keep our standards high.

Breeding season is around the corner, what will you be hatching??? 🐣
Here are a few important things to consider before setting eggs and playing the waiting game.
First off always start with the best examples you have in a breed or variety, next make sure they are healthy and vigorous to ensure that you will have a good hatch rate. For roosters it is best to make certain that your male bird are active and well fed, underweight males tend to be weak and poor producers, whereas overweight males are lazy and lethargic, sometimes lacking in muscle or body strength. For hens it is even more important that they are not only up to the Standard of Perfection but that they are good layers and are not molting. đŸȘ¶
We typically keep a couple of hens in with our males but keep track of who’s laying which eggs. Record keeping is essential, it allows you to keep track of your stock in generations.
And lastly plan ahead and make sure you aren’t going on vacation when hatching day arrives!
Happy egg setting everyone!!!

Show season has ended well for us and we’re moving on to breeding season with our birds. I am excited for the 2025 calendar year, we already have chicks in ther brooder and some stunning young roosters to watch grow out. Our goal is to make nationals with a display of black and possibly a trio of standard blue langshan in Knoxville TN for the Dixie spring show.

Monday poultry meditations.🩅

So I’ve been looking at my grow outs lately and young birds and it has me thinking about how lucky I am to raise my birds and see them develop into stunning adults but there’s a reason it takes a long time to get the (right bird)
 TIME

A good breeder thinks ahead, a poor breeder breeds one or two years ahead, however a master breeder thinks in generations. Years or even decades into the future about the sustainability of the integrity of the animals they love so dearly.
I’ve been extremely fortunate to know more the one master breeder, and of more than one species too.
The important part of this is how much time you are willing to invest in your own lines.
One year?
How about twenty ???
Breeding and raising chickens takes a great deal less time than say horses or cattle but it’s essentially a similar concept.

Please don’t let me bore you with a lengthy explanation so keep scrolling if you’d rather.

This picture is of my beloved Jayla, who is molting and looks rather like a Cochin instead of a Langshan. She if a seventh generation bird I bred and I’m very proud of her however she is so massive that she doesn’t quite fit into her standard shape

Okay she’s FAT.
However, she has been the mother and now grandmother to some of the best birds! Her depth and width of body and her head shape is impeccable, making her an excellent choice for procreation. She has the best laying capacity and would be an excellent choice for the table but that will never happen. You can’t just beed for type and Ignore structure, the straightness and alignment of the body so that they are physically able to move around freely. Therefore making them sound and free from lameness, a good layer should have big bones to pull calcium from!

I also think that it’s important to breed for gentle roosters and nice demeanor but not dull or lazy birds, they should be active and capable of foraging, short flights and raising their own young! If a hen is overly aggressive towards her babies she won’t be in my breeding program. Period.
Bantams grow much quicker than large fowl and the langshan is a slow grower which means even more time and effort to produce the fruit of your labor.

This post isn’t about horses but it is somewhat along the same mentally that if you want to breed a good solid riding horse it will take you close to a decade to produce one. By the time they are born and grow and then receive enough training you’re looking at an enormous amount of love, labor and financial support to make one decent animal!!! And that’s just one!

You won’t turn turds into Chardonnay 💖 but look at the old standard of perfection, from 100 years ago and you’ll start to see trends that are disturbing in how we change breeds and variety over a great length of time. Make certain that before you cull you look at the economic qualities of each individual and weigh them on what is more important. Looks or durability ???

So imagine raising a breed of chickens and devoting your energy, money and most importantly TIME into ensuring the quality and health of your entire flock.
This truly becomes your life in a way that hard to describe but in the most rewarding way.

I love caring for these fantastic creatures and will continue to support the breed and many others as well. It’s a real privilege to be a breed steward and advocate for the future of the poultry fancy!💖
That’s all the feathers for nowđŸȘ¶
