Monday poultry meditations.đŠ
So Iâve been looking at my grow outs lately and young birds and it has me thinking about how lucky I am to raise my birds and see them develop into stunning adults but thereâs a reason it takes a long time to get the (right bird)⊠TIME
A good breeder thinks ahead, a poor breeder breeds one or two years ahead, however a master breeder thinks in generations. Years or even decades into the future about the sustainability of the integrity of the animals they love so dearly.
Iâve been extremely fortunate to know more the one master breeder, and of more than one species too.
The important part of this is how much time you are willing to invest in your own lines.
One year?
How about twenty ???
Breeding and raising chickens takes a great deal less time than say horses or cattle but itâs essentially a similar concept.
Please donât let me bore you with a lengthy explanation so keep scrolling if youâd rather.
This picture is of my beloved Jayla, who is molting and looks rather like a Cochin instead of a Langshan. She if a seventh generation bird I bred and Iâm very proud of her however she is so massive that she doesnât quite fit into her standard shapeâŠ
Okay sheâs FAT.
However, she has been the mother and now grandmother to some of the best birds! Her depth and width of body and her head shape is impeccable, making her an excellent choice for procreation. She has the best laying capacity and would be an excellent choice for the table but that will never happen. You canât just beed for type and Ignore structure, the straightness and alignment of the body so that they are physically able to move around freely. Therefore making them sound and free from lameness, a good layer should have big bones to pull calcium from!
I also think that itâs important to breed for gentle roosters and nice demeanor but not dull or lazy birds, they should be active and capable of foraging, short flights and raising their own young! If a hen is overly aggressive towards her babies she wonât be in my breeding program. Period.
Bantams grow much quicker than large fowl and the langshan is a slow grower which means even more time and effort to produce the fruit of your labor.
This post isnât about horses but it is somewhat along the same mentally that if you want to breed a good solid riding horse it will take you close to a decade to produce one. By the time they are born and grow and then receive enough training youâre looking at an enormous amount of love, labor and financial support to make one decent animal!!! And thatâs just one!
You wonât turn turds into Chardonnay đ but look at the old standard of perfection, from 100 years ago and youâll start to see trends that are disturbing in how we change breeds and variety over a great length of time. Make certain that before you cull you look at the economic qualities of each individual and weigh them on what is more important. Looks or durability ???
So imagine raising a breed of chickens and devoting your energy, money and most importantly TIME into ensuring the quality and health of your entire flock.
This truly becomes your life in a way that hard to describe but in the most rewarding way.
I love caring for these fantastic creatures and will continue to support the breed and many others as well. Itâs a real privilege to be a breed steward and advocate for the future of the poultry fancy!đ
Thatâs all the feathers for nowđȘ¶
