Opening day is getting closer!

I am super excited to see these young chicks with their hen…one of my friends sent me this video…this pen raised hen was released and recalled to the house for a month last fall….amazing that she’s survived so long and has even laid a clutch of chicks

These are Blue Quail chicks that I hatched out…..i’m having to move them into the tall recall house to make room for younger chicks.

These videos show me running the chicks into the external cage and into the recall house through the funnel. This shows the importance of “training” the birds how to get into the house through the funnel. There is visible apprehension for the birds…..but with practice (at least 5-6 times), they will all go into the house in less than 30 seconds. Without that training, more than likely you won’t get 100% recall and will inevitably lose birds. You would probably pull up the next day and see your birds running around outside instead of being in the house.

I’m always looking to find ways to enhance the recall house experience.…..which has sent me into an exciting direction……hatching out chicks that i will be able to use in my recall houses!

I started last spring (2021) with 8 of my Blue quail training birds that i decided to retire from the training field. I had 23 originally in my recall house and these are the ones i had left after 6 months and 35 releases. I brought these 8 birds to my shop so i could monitor their behavior…..super amazing birds! I started feeding a high protein food and before you know it, they were laying eggs! At first when i told my wife i was going to buy an incubator, she thought i was nutso……until they started hatching 3 weeks later……then she was like OH MY GOD! WE GOT CHICKS!!!!! An absolutely incredible experience and very gratifying! Hatching out chicks may not be for everyone but if you are up for a new challenge to take with your recall houses, this can be a game changer. Im excited seeing these chicks grow and can’t wait to start filling up my houses……I will add videos as this progresses and i hope everyone enjoys these that i post on the thread!

This is the most recent low profile house….it has 2 water buckets and 1 food bucket. It’s 42” sq. X 36” at its tallest. The low profile design allows it to blend into cover easier and still have the effectiveness of a full size recall house. It can maintain 25-30 pen raised quail comfortably. Release 10…15….even 20 birds into the training field and strap in for plenty of action! The birds left inside the house will whistle the released birds back where they get into the house through a funnel but can’t get back out. Go back the next day and all of the birds are back insides the house and anxious to be released again. Time and again, these birds will keep coming back!

I build these in Childress, Tx.
They are $1300 with all accessories.

They can be shipped on a pallet throughout the states. Shipping is most economical if it can be delivered to a business that has a loading dock or fork lift. Shippers charge extra for residential/farm deliveries and extra if a lift gate is needed.

This is my newest design for the low profile quail recall house. The short design allows the house to blend into the terrain a little bit more. I’m going to show the house and the terrific features that it offers …..

Spring is a fantastic time to develop your field training program. A recall house (or several) set up in the field will ensure plenty of opportunity for hands on training your bird dogs. I stock my spring houses with young birds ….6-8 weeks is an ideal age. They are juvenile birds and don’t have the temptation to stay out and pair off. As the days start to warm up, pay extra attention to your birds water system….they will go through a full bucket of water in about a week. Your recall house doesn’t have to be set up in the shade but I’m sure the birds do appreciate it….it will make a much larger impact during the approaching summer heat.
Happy training!

Below you will see pictures of the food and water system. There is a water fill funnel mounted on the outside of the house with PVC carrying the water inside the house and into the water bucket. The bucket sets on the provided stand. Never fill the bucket on the ground as it will damage the ni***es and make them leak. Best practice is to set everything up then fill from the external funnel. The birds will go under the stand and peck the ni***es to drink. In the hotter months, the birds will lean on the ni***es to help regulate their body temperatures. During the hotter months, the water will last about 5 days….in cooler months 3-4 weeks.

Time to start focusing on spring training. Pen raised quail are hard to find this time of year (mid March) but chicks should be available from a lot of breeders in 3-4 weeks. I try to stock my spring house with young birds around 6 weeks old. These are juvenile birds that won’t be interested in staying out and pairing off. I always add a chicken probiotic to my water when I first stock my house with birds….it seems to help them make a smooth transition into their new home. One important note….never fill the water bucket resting on the ground….it will damage the ni***es and they will leak. Best practice is to have it set up inside the house and fill it using the external water fill funnel. Also, there is a medicated feed that I give them as well…..check Tractor Supply….they have a wide variety of food. Keep a close eye on their food and water this first week to ensure everything is working properly. The first week in the recall house can be difficult on the birds and you may have a couple of casualties along the way….hopefully these tips help to having a successful recall house!

This is a more lightweight recall house the a friend asked me to build for him…..it has a lot of great features to make this house easy to maintain and very user friendly….

When determining where to place the house requires some thought. Try to envision where you want the birds to fly to…..it could be a tree line, some plumb thickets or whatever type of cover that you have. Expect the birds to fly 75-100 yards. Try to avoid setting it up close to a water source or food plot because that may take away the incentive for the birds to come back to the house. It’s not imperative to set the house up in shade but the birds would appreciate it I’m sure.

I always wait about 7 days before I start releasing my birds…..it gives them time to adjust to their new home. During that week, I will “train” my birds how to get into the house through the funnel using the cage and rack system. I will run them through the funnel 5-6 times to make sure they are comfortable with it. It’s always good to pay extra attention to the food and water system that first week….make sure they can access the food easily and check the water bucket to ensure the ni***es don’t leak. I always add a chicken probiotic to the water…..it seems to help the birds make a smooth transition to their new home….

I have wanted to try recalling Blues but could never find anyone that raised them. Finally, last July, I was so fortunate to have gotten 23 birds to stock in my recall house. I released them 35 times from July until January….

I’ve built and designed these houses with my father for 13 years. Countless hours have been spent in the field developing this house to be the strongest, most efficient and highly effective recall house possible. Just when I think I’ve got it all figured out, someone will say “how about an automatic chicken coop door to close the funnel”……well YEAH!

02/10/2021

One of the most important steps to a successful recall house is to “train” the birds how to get inside the house through the funnel. I try to run them through the funnel at least 5-6 times before I start releasing any. The first few times, you will see an apprehension to go through the funnel ….they would have that same reluctance if you were to release them without training…, basically you will pull up to the house and see the birds running around outside because they are afraid to use the funnel.

The house that I build has a cage and rack system that makes it easy to contain the birds in a cage to be able to run them through the funnel….
