Hurricane impacts on quail? Helene carved a path along the eastern side of the Red Hills and many of the region’s wild quail properties are dealing with serious clean-up efforts. While extreme weather can be challenging for people and wildlife, bobwhite are resilient, which we again noted following Helene. For example, on Tall Timbers, which was on the western edge of the hurricane, only 2 out of 60 adult radio-tagged bobwhite died during the time period of the storm, and no nests or broods were lost. Livingston Place, which took a much more direct hit, experienced no adult bobwhite mortality and had no active nests or broods to be impacted. Good news for bobwhite populations and the coming hunting season.

I have wanted to try recalling Blues but could never find anyone that raised them. Finally, last July, I was so fortunate to have gotten 23 birds to stock in my recall house. I released them 35 times from July until January….

I’ve built and designed these houses with my father for 13 years. Countless hours have been spent in the field developing this house to be the strongest, most efficient and highly effective recall house possible. Just when I think I’ve got it all figured out, someone will say “how about an automatic chicken coop door to close the funnel”……well YEAH!

One of the most important steps to a successful recall house is to “train” the birds how to get inside the house through the funnel. I try to run them through the funnel at least 5-6 times before I start releasing any. The first few times, you will see an apprehension to go through the funnel ….they would have that same reluctance if you were to release them without training…, basically you will pull up to the house and see the birds running around outside because they are afraid to use the funnel.

The house that I build has a cage and rack system that makes it easy to contain the birds in a cage to be able to run them through the funnel….
