From years of classical training and research of various riding styles, Peggy Cummings is a transformer: a conductor of information that changes how people ride, how they feel in their bodies, and how they perceive their

horses and life in general. And she is an innovator: a creator of exercises designed to help horse and human dance and synchronize together. Peggy developed the Connected Riding method to achieve freedom of movement and self-carriage for both horse and rider. Her technique is based on reciprocal connection rather than force; it enhances performance through better communication. Peggy has no doubt that promoting freedom of movement and reciprocity through elastic connection between horse and rider creates the magic of being ‘in sync’. Connected Riding® teaches you to ride from the inside (by feeling), to the outside (by action). Scapulas and releasing the top line

I am currently a part of a weekly Feldenkrais ATM series hosted by Leah Astrup with Integrated Movement,LLC

Yesterday evening, we explored an ATM called Skillful Scapulas. Curiously drawing attention to our scapulas and their connection to the rest of our body. Exploring and playing with isolating and engaging them, and what effect that had on other areas of our body.

It was amazing how the slightest engagement of the scapula made our arms so much lighter and softer, yet strong and stable.

I brought that feeling into my ground work today. Connected Riding with Peggy Cummings' has an exercise in her book, "Connect With Your Horse From the Ground" called Elephants Trunk. It's an exercise that is wonderful for helping horses release and soften their topline so that they can lift through the base of their neck. It's a favorite of mine but today, it was different, in an amazing away! I carried the awareness and feeling from last night's ATM...and the horses felt it immediately. The subtle engagement of the scapula made managing my arm and connection with the halter that much more soft, stable and effortless. Inviting the horses into softness with that much more ease.

I played with going back to how I was doing it previously, without that scapula awareness...noting just a hair more brace in the horses. Then, returning to the new way, and an eager release and lengthening from the horse.

Uhm, how totally cool is that?!

Another reminder that our awareness and body organization means so much to our horses. Sometimes merely a thought can open a door we did not know we had closed and release a block that we did not even know we had created.

The horses are so eager for these things, they tell us the truth immediately. Their sensitivity will never cease to amaze me!
