After an amazing 15 years, Calvin’s Paws has bid farewell to PetSmart Brier Creek. We will no longer house cats in the adoption center or conduct adoption events at that location.

While it’s never easy to say goodbye, we are grateful for the years of beautiful moments matchmaking cats with adopters. Our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, adopters, and the many, many PetSmart staff members with whom we have shared our rescue journey over the years.

We have plans for the future and we’re excited for what lies ahead!

We lost our sweet, wonky girl Melinda yesterday. She came to us as a kitten in 2014, and lived her life energetically to the very end. Two weeks ago she seemed fine. Last weekend she had some noticeable weight loss. By Wednesday she was dehydrated and had stopped wanting to eat, and on Friday the vet found a large mass in her abdomen. As much as we would haved loved to have her outlive us all, we felt the only compassionate option was to let her go.

Melinda had limb deformities in all but her back right leg. That never slowed her down or kept her from going where she wanted to go. Her nickname was "pinball" from the way she would recklessly throw herself in the direction she wanted to go, furniture or structural obstacles be damned. She was a world-class snuggler and willing headrest whenever someone sat in the Big Chair, which was her lifelong favorite place to be.

We're going to miss you, Melinda. You were one of a kind, and we'll remember you forever.

Why, our newest fosters! A polydactyl mama and baby girl have come to stay with us for a bit. Mama will be ready for adoption shortly and baby will get her first vet care.

They're going to need names. Right now I'm mentally calling them Mama Beans and Baby Beans because of all the toe beans. That's probably bad.

Lucky and Patrick are getting so big! They're finally outgrowing the kitten pen, and having supervised romping time in the kitten room.

Once we're done updating the kitten proofing, they'll graduate to having the whole room to themselves!

Pete crossed the Rainbow Bridge on his own a few minutes ago. He was not alone. He was warm and safe and loved.

We had hoped, as we always do, that whatever ailed him could be fixed. Whatever it was, it was too much or had gone on too long.

We will cherish the time we had with Pete, and are grateful to those who brought him to us and who supported our efforts to save him.

Rest well and run free, Pete the Cat. You will be missed, and you mattered.

True Story.

Sadly, we lost our void kitten, Kelly, last night to complications of ocular/Neuro FIP.

Her eye clouded up three weeks ago, but it was only last Thursday that we got the definitive diagnosis of FIP. Thanks to the help of the FIP Warrior's group here on Facebook, we were able to get her started on the treatment that we used to save and cure both Rooter and Tater Tot. Unfortunately, we didn't even have time to setup a fundraiser to help cover the cost.

We rushed her to an emergency vet in Durham where they found large amounts of new fluid around her heart, her lungs, and in her abdomen.

After much soul searching, we felt it was best to let her go than to allow her to continue to suffer.

We'll always be haunted by the "what ifs" of this decision, but we're also well aware that due to the nature of animal rescue and the scourge of FIP, we'll have to make similar decisions in the future. Hopefully, there will be more and better options when that day comes.

Rest well and run free, Kelly. We'll never forget you and never stop fighting for others like you.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to tell you that Our Una, our little Impossible Girl, earned her angel wings this morning.

We loved her for as long as we could and for as long as her heart would allow her to stay.

She will always be remembered and greatly missed.
