A month ago Sam joined us. Frightened, upset and confused. Only used to the one home he'd ever known and deeply bonded to his favorite human who has since passed away.

Yesterday afternoon we went to the vet to have HD Xrays done of Wulf av Froskeland, Moonchild fra Jegere Drøm and Thuray's Kyril Zephyros. We are awaiting official OFA judgement but the hips already look great and got deemed HD free by the vet. Wulfs hips are pictured here.

Kyrios also got his "before breeding" health characteristics panel done. Which states he is free of a lot of birth defects as wel as entropion and skeletal deformities, teeth and jaw issues

His HCM/PKD/CIN scan was 100% good too and so we are ready and approved to use in our breeding program

genetics genetics genetics.

last week the ursa major course from campus felinaerium started and so we will be working our way through a course on genetics for all breeds.

we already have some extensive knowledge about genetics with Linh being a microbiologist and having studied biomedical science, as well as both my experience and paraveterinarian study. but ones knowledge should never cease to develop and so we are participating.

let the headaches commence! :D

We had an amazingly succesful and fun weekend away to the BTCC Traditional & TICA show in Ath, Belgium.

You know it's bad when the last time you took actual decent photos of one of your cats is when she was still a baby.

Maze was aptly named after mazikeen. One of the lillim. A little demon 😂

All photos we currently have are either show photos (stretched and weird angles or in her show pen) or her looking away on purpose.

So today we call in the help of Nynke from Cat'chy Images, in the hopes that she can deal with our little devil.

Yesterday we went and attended the Felikat Show in Hilversum with our TICA DGC Thuraya's Kyril Zephyros.

He received an Ex2, and we were very proud to hear a judge who always is extremely strict about grooming call our presentation of his coat "exquisite". So we will take it as a win.

"Your Responsibility to your Breeder"

We talk a lot about what a good breeder is expected to do for you. We require them to health test their breeding cats, guarantee the health and temperament of each kitten, be there for you 24/7 for up to 18 years — longer than most other relationships you are likely to have in your life.

We haven’t really talked about your responsibilities to your breeder.
I have done a lot of thinking. Breeders tend to be very private people. They don’t tell you about the three weeks they spend getting almost no sleep except for quick naps next to the kitten pen because Mother Cat needs some help. Maybe her milk hasn’t come in. Maybe her mothering instincts are a little slow to arrive. Maybe she wants you to show her how to be a mum. Maybe she died. Regardless, those first three weeks with kittens are often more intense than the first three weeks with a human infant.

Feeding six or eight kittens every two hours is exhausting. We haven’t got our mother-in-laws, husbands or best friends here to help us. Struggling kittens count on us to be their ICU nurse. It is no surprise that our maternal (or paternal) instincts go full bore on us, and we bond to these guys for life.

Not everything goes well with every kitten in every litter. Losing a kitten is deeply traumatic. We fight so hard to save them and often can’t. Death is not pretty. Death is graphic. It is not peaceful. It leaves a scar on our soul.

After we get through the first three weeks, we spend nearly every waking moment watching, thinking, analyzing, cuddling, loving and, inevitably, bonding. Could you hold a baby in your lap and not feel anything? Neither can we. By the time your kitten leaves our house, that kitten is as much a part of our heart as it is yours.

Things go wrong. We get that. Best intentions fade through no fault of our own. Maybe a job was lost. Maybe the terms of our rental agreement changed. Maybe someone in our family became sick and needs all our attention. Maybe one of a million things.

Breeders get that. We are people, too. We have lived as much life as you have. We know the world is not a perfect place. We also know that sometimes, despite our best intentions, we mismatched your kitten to you.

Whatever the reason, we know that not every kitten is going to live its full life with the people we placed it with. Divorce, death, gosh. Anything can happen. But we love our babies (and we love you), and we want to be here to help. If you can no longer keep your cat, please be open and communicative. If your cat has a close relationship with someone else, let us know. That contract you signed with us? The one that guarantees health and our lifetime assistance? That applies to the kitten, no matter who owns him/her.

But more importantly, please be kind to our hearts. If you lost a grandchild — say your son and his wife were divorced and the wife cuts off all communication with you — that would hurt. You would feel sad, lost, a little panicky.

That’s how we feel when we lose track of a kitten.

So, please. Stay in contact with your breeder. Let him or her share in your cat’s joys and frustrations. Let them be a shoulder for you. Let them provide a listening ear and support. And please please please let them know where your cat is, and if you can’t keep it, please let them be involved in any placements that may need to occur.

Not one . Not two, but three titles confirmed in my mailbox this morning.

Words cannot describe how proud I am to see the double grand Champion confirmed after getting enough points to achieve it in one show. And not only that, but Kyrios was only 4 days in adult class!!

With getting these titles confirmed we are both in the top 25 of cats in our region (with quite some pretty NFO behind us as well)(still subject to change as season ain't over yet) as wel as best adult AND kitten NFO in the region ❤

Tomorrow, We will test our first breeding cat for HD and send the imaging to OFA.
HD is not something usually tested for in NFO however with all our NFO getting bigger and bigger, i felt like responsibility needs to be taken accordingly.
we are looking forward to some positive results!

Day two of the CaT tica show:

Wulf av Froskeland did good. He was very brave! Had to concede his wins to Kyrios. 600 points gathered, enough for Champion, but without a final we dont have the title quite yet.
Thuraya's Kyril Zephyros did INSANELY well today.
He finalled in 6 out of 6 rings!!

Most notable was:
ABSOLUTE BEST all breed adult cat and second best all breed adult cat ❤

With 11 total finals and a whopping 2270 points we technically now have enough points for double grand Champion, but as I don't know the show rules well enough I am unsure if we need another separate final to solidify the Double grand Champion title! At 8 damned months old.

He blows my mind ❤

Again a massive thank you to all judges who thought so highly of him, and to CaT for the amazing show.
Next stop: tica show in Ath, Belgium ❤

Day one for the tica show is coming to a close.

To say I am flabbergasted is an understatement beyond an understatement. In tica, cats enter the adult class with 8 months. Kyrios being 8 months and 4 days was therefore one of the youngest among 74 adult, allbreed cats.

Thuraya's Kyril Zephyros finalled in 5 out of 6 finals today. 5 times best of breed.

Most notable in terms of the finals:
2nd best allbreed, 7th best Longhair and 7th best male.

This makes him tica champion. Tomorrow however there is another day and we have a great shot at making him Grand Champion in one show!!

Wulf av Froskeland joined us for his first ever show, but had to concede his wins to Kyrios. Nevertheless we are proud of him, tica shows are intensive and he did very well, for it being his first time!

A big thank you to all judges who thought so highly of Kyrios, as well as CaT for a great first day!
