Another processing day done!
Successful day harvesting our Cornish Rock Broilers with some friends and family. I'm very thankful that we are able to do this for ourselves and our family providing more than enough chicken to support us through the year ahead.

All washed up and ready for Thanksgiving 🦃
Of course I didn't grab pictures of River, though she enjoyed the bath even more than Mila.
Hope you all enjoy your weekends, spend some time with family and friends and find something you're thankful for.

We are over the halfway mark at 5 weeks old on these Cornish Cross broilers. They're turning out really well and have put on a ton of size. In a few more short weeks our hard work will have paid off and our family will have chicken for the coming year in the freezer.
Raising our own food started with raising chickens and eventually expanded into a few other varieties of animals and it's something I hope to always be able to do for ourselves. The control over what all goes into the animals along with providing the animals with the best nutrition I can provide in the best atmosphere i have available to them, makes everything worth it and that dedication is returned to us through the nutrition in that animal. Even in the smallest of ways I think everyone could be a little more self reliant, growing a few vegetables even inside under a grow light all the way to some scale of backyard meat birds or rabbits.
With the costs in the stores these days it's something we owe to ourselves.

First day and night out for our broilers. The 4 week mark hit and the brooder was starting to get a little tight for all 57 birds. Fresh grass, bugs grubs and anything else they can forage with their feed and water will have the development of these birds take off from here. Daily they will be moved to a fresh spot in the safety of their tractor where they can forage, move around and enjoy the fresh air along with the current not so favorable weather lol. With each move leaving behind fertilized pasture improving our soil, and our grass.
4 more short weeks and these birds will be ready for processing and will feed our family for the year ahead.
If you have any interest or questions about raising broilers in your own backyard feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. Definitely something more should be able to do these days!

The end of summer harvests, preparations, and of course some coffee. Still lots of nectarines coming in on the trees, some late apples, peppers, pickling cucs and beans among others. Broilers this year have been pushed later this summer and are finally getting ready to get out to pasture in the coming weeks as long as the weather holds up. It will sure beat processing in the excessive heat of mid August lol. Our Rams are ready for the freezer and seems this fall will be bountiful to provide throughout the year to come.
Each year seems to be a learning experience as we fine tune the things we do to make things more efficient and simplified so we can better reap the fruits of our labour... Literally.

Finally getting ready for harvest on these four
Golden Prolific Nectarine Trees. Been a long wait since spring to finally get a sample today. These trees are a particular favorite of mine and what started me into the whole fruit trees and gardening thing.

One year!
Rustic's Down by the "River" so happy with how this pup has progressed, she is proving to be a very special dog. River is an exceptionally quick learner, very sweet natured and always ready to work, and boy does she love her sticks. From downed little trees being dragged across the property to probably every stick on the property collected into a pile, River likes to get out there and have some fun.
Can't believe it has been a year since our litter was born. The time sure flies! We have been thankful to be a part of the pups lives as the families share their progress. Here is to all the Rustic Pups and their Families! Happy Birthday.

Our roosters watching over our flock while the hens peck and forage the pasture. Their diverse diet available to them while they range throughout the day adds to the nutritional value of their eggs which we collect each day. Aside from what they readily forage off the land we offer our flock a variety of fermented whole grains which includes barley, wheat and oats among others. Sprouts of the mentioned grains and of course help us make use of table scraps. Doing so can help offset the ever rising feed bill for our chickens and the fermentation and sprouting process turns those little grains into nutritional powerhouses that directly affect the hens health but also the eggs that we eat!

A day outside with the family. Dinner on the smoker, some foraging in the garden collecting a couple cherries and some strawberries. Animals all out enjoying the grass, some sun and the shade. Chicks growing and more hatches on the way. We also had our second goat rescue this week and a completely other herd in the neighbourhood who decided to come by for the party. Never a full moment around here

More lambs off to their new pastures.
The past few days have been filled with corralling lambs and getting them all ready for their new farms, pullets off to start their new flocks and working in the gardens. Despite all the rain, spring really is here!
We have a few pullets left to be placed that are still available, a couple orpingtons and a couple mixes ready to go! Contact us for more information!

Rustic's Nilson Loki Elsker Ender
Formerly red collar but more famously "sheepdog" a favorite of our youngest daughter's. This guy won the Hearts of our family and holds a very special place with his chilled out demeanor and ready to go attitude. This pool loving guy has found his perfect fit with his family and we're so happy to hear how great he is doing. We appreciate all these updates on these rustic pups and look forward to more in the future!

let me reintroduce
Rustic's Sardar Cedar Singh "Cedar"
This big boy has always known how to live the good life from taking the best spot and hogging the cool air of the fan during the summer heat to splashing around in the pools with the rest of the litter. He now has his own farm with his awesome family and Golden Retriever best buddy. I'm sure he'll be looking for more ways to beat the heat this summer and we can't wait to see.

Another update on another amazing pup from our litter last year. Rustic's Francisca Valdivia Yamashiro
"Pancha" formerly pink collar.
From exploring the outdoors and dressing up for Halloween she's enjoying the good life with her amazing family. We appreciate all the updates very much and love seeing our pups out there thriving and living a good dogs life.
Pancha was a very special pup from our litter being born last and after quite the time gap from the rest of the litter when things have long since seemed to have been finished more than 24 hours later. She arrived strong and caught up with the rest of the litter over a few short days and was among our favorites with her great personality and happily following us around while we did our chores. Cant wait to see what life has in store for her.

Heel work, obedience, steadiness and of course some fun bumpers to end off the session.
This pup is coming along beautifully, which is no surprise being a chip off the old block out of Mila.

The flock out for breakfast, foraging and having a drink from the rain collected from last night while they work on producing eggs for us to collect shortly.
Eggs compared from conventionally-raised chickens and eggs from Pasture-Raised hens have: Double the amount of vitamin E and long-chain omega-3 fats. More than twice the amount of total omega-3 fatty acids. These eggs truly are a super food providing a very nutrient dense complete protein, promote good cholesterol, can lower your Triglycerides along with your chances for a stroke and promote your heart Heath. That's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the benefits of eggs and better yet Pasture-Raised eggs and poultry. 🥚 🍳 🐓

Mason bees out, blooms have opened on many of the fruit trees and some planting in the garden to kick off this nice spring weather. A couple bee house stations to make sure I get some good pollination all around should make my garden explode this year. 🐝 Big shout out to Wayne Schau for some new houses. If you're looking to add some top quality houses for your bees and beat those wild nursery prices pm me to get in touch with him. Can't recommend enough. What are you planting in your gardens this spring!!?
