I am a firm believer that all dogs can benefit from muzzle training.

It helps build confidence (any training getting them comfortable with a new or strange thing does), builds comfort with wearing a muzzle in case of emergencies where a dog may be required to wear a muzzle (such as a major injury, etc), travel (certain places such as subways, Trains and ferries in certain areas allow dogs but only if muzzled), introduction to unknown dogs, to use in stead of a cone (less invasive and less stressful for many dogs).

My dogs and I (I am a dog trainer) also do a lot of aggressive/reactive dog evaluations and rehab work where all dogs are muzzled to ensure safety.

This allows dogs with actual aggressive/reactive temperements to build a positive association with other humans/dogs in a safe manner while continuing to work on their behavioral issues.

Here are some of the many reasons someone may muzzle train their dogs:

Thank you for baring with us, we have lost most a ton of our information and are trying to recover them.

We are building an official website that will include a blog with all of our series continuing to share positive muzzle stories.

21/01/2021

Due to a change in Facebook's policies and access, we will be moving to a different platform over the next month.

We will still be keeping this site active, once the change has been made, but the new platform will be linked to regularly rather than our many series being posted directly to Facebook.

Thank you for baring with us during this change!

MUZZLE TRAINING AND TIPS

Happy Friday!

It is important to understand that not all muzzles are equal. We touched base on the variety of muzzles available recently but it is very important to note that not all muzzles are the same, and not all of them offer the same protection.

Some are bite proof, ideal for a bite risk dog, and some are not.

Baskerville muzzles and Biothane muzzles are malleable and not bite proof. They have many uses and are great tools, especially for dogs who are not bite risks but for truly determined or aggressive dogs they will not prevent a bite nor damage being caused.

Please keep this in mind when deciding what muzzle is best for your dog. We highly recommend joining Muzzle Training and Tips for proper sizing and determining what muzzle is best suited for your dog's individual needs.

A common misconception is that muzzles make a dog unhappy or that they are unable to enjoy things your average dog does, such as playing.

This is Eddie! And here is what Eddie's owner says about Eddie and her muzzle:

"This is Eddie and Rocco 💖

Muzzled pup is my girl Eddie. She’s dog reactive/nervous aggressive.

Rocco is my friends dog. They go for regular walks together and he’s one of the only dogs that she’s comfortable enough to play with. They’ve known each other for 4years (they’re both about 5years old).

Even though they’re great together, I’d never have the confidence to let Eddie do this without the muzzle - we had a bite incident a few years ago so I get very nervous whenever she’s around other dogs. The muzzle has changed our lives, we don’t leave the house without it and since I’ve been able to relax she’s a completely different dog. My confidence has definitely given her confidence and I love seeing her playing like this 💖"

This is an absolutely beautiful story and we are so happy Eddie's owner Kristy shared this with us!

//Muzzle Monday\\

Manny-4 year old-Pitbull Rottweiler mix.

"Manny was picked up as a stray. I adopted him from my vet tech school almost 3 years ago. It was soon after bringing him home that I discovered his reactivity to strange dogs, children, and strangers. We’ve spent the past 3 years training and working on his reactivity. I introduced muzzle training to him a little over a year ago and it’s done nothing but change him for the better.

The muzzle has truly widened our boarders and decreased both of our anxieties. We can now partake in many activities that I used to dread - pet stores, parties, hikes, and pack walks! His reactivity is now minimal and he is overall a fairly solid dog 😊

We love to share our story so people stop looking at muzzle dogs and think “poor dog”. This is anything BUT a poor dog. This is a dog who is having the time of his life exploring places outside of the house safely and responsibly."

Here is a story from a MT&T member expressing their great success from getting assistance from the admins in the group

🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Owner: Zara Bailey

Before I adopted my reactive girl Vega, I thought muzzles were only for scary, aggressive and unstable dogs. As she grew up, Vega’s fear got out of control. Initially, for short-term use, I had her wear a mesh muzzle. It looked “less scary”, I had told myself. I knew it wasn’t ideal, but I didn’t really know what else I could do at the time. After Vega continued to show fear aggression to other dogs, and eventually became a bite risk, I knew I had to do something about it. I took to facebook and found Muzzle Training & Tips, and began to educate myself on the use of muzzles. I realised that dogs wear them for SO many reasons, and they weren’t just a symbol of an aggressive dog. After scrolling through many posts, I decided I would need a proper (and more humane) muzzle for my girl.

I headed to the local pet store to get Vega fitted. Their stock included Baskerville Ultra muzzles up to a size 5. I requested for Vega to try on the 5, however the staff firmly told me that it was much too large for her, and that a 4 would be the perfect fit. I reluctantly agreed.

As I posted my results to MT&T, I was swiftly educated and reminded that this muzzle was far from okay. The incredible admins quickly sized me for a size 5 Jafco instead, and I ordered it that afternoon. Vega readily accepted this roomy muzzle and felt comfortable enough to swim and play right away. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable she’d be if I had stayed with the mesh or Baskerville muzzles. Now we can go on walks stress-free, because I know she’s comfortable, and everyone can stay safe.

A very common concern we hear in regards to muzzling a dog is that the dog cannot protect itself. We believe this post hits the nail on the head!

"How is my dog supposed to protect itself if it's muzzled and we're attacked by another dog?"
First of all, have you ever tried to separate two fighting dogs? Let me tell you, its a lot easier to do with one set of teeth than it is with two.
Second, know the laws in your area. In my state if a dog attacks my dog, regardless of who is on or off leash, and there is even the slightest possibility my dog could be construed as the aggressor in the situation, we will be fined by the city, we will be on the hook for all vet bills, she will be labelled a dangerous dog, and she could be put down. At least with a muzzle, there would be no question of which dog was the aggressor.
Third, your dog is YOUR pet which means that YOU are responsible for it. It is not your dog's job to protect itself, and unless they've been trained in personal protection it's not their job to protect you either. It's your job to protect them, and there are multiple ways you can do that. You can carry cans of compressed air, citronella spray, or a mini air horn to startle and deter an approaching or attacking dog. Even a big stick would come in handy. You are your dog's advocate, not the other way around.

18/08/2020

It is often a misconception that if you need to use a muzzle, or choose to use a muzzle, you should focus more on training your dog.

A muzzle does not equal an untrained dog. Infact many muzzle trained dogs are either in the process of training or are well trained.

Kona-American Staff Mix- 4 years

"Kona can occasionally get overwhelmed with other dogs that are off leash coming up to her when she’s not expecting it (especially a lot of the little dogs in the neighborhood) so we decided to muzzle train. She’s been doing FANTASTIC and she’s actually built up confidence! People give her the space she needs now, and she stays safe and I don’t have to worry about an incident if an unleashed dog comes up to her."

Muzzle Training & Tips has sized both Shalene (Founder) & Ashtin’s (Co-Founder) dogs which are pictured below.
The group is very adamant about promoting proper pant room for dogs utilizing muzzles. Sometimes people can easily mistake a muzzle looking proper because the dog’a mouth isn’t restricted entirely, but more times than not it still is not enough room to allow the dog to comfortably give a full* pant.
Dogs pant when they’re hot, exercising, excited, stressed, in pain, & even some medicaton will cause panting and it’s crucial to not constrict their pant in any for because it will cause them to gain more stress and uncomfortableness, and not to mention that no living being enjoys any of their airflow restricted.

Please take a look at the graphs below created by MT&T of Shalene & Ashtin’s dogs to compare the dog’a measurements with the muzzle size provided. I have also included the spreadsheet with both the Freedom M9/M10 and Jafco sizing if you wanted to compare the dog’s measurements provided in the graphs to the muzzle they have to get an idea of what the administration team evaluates when choosing a brand and size for any dog in need.

Elliott Moose-3 years-Mixed breed

Elliott is muzzle trained because at a year and a half old developed reactivity towards other dogs.

"I choose to muzzle him when out to make others more comfortable if he reacts to other dogs. Muzzle training has allowed him to successfully meet and become friends with other dogs and go everywhere any other dog goes while keeping him and others safe. 🙂 "

This is a fantastic example of how to properly train your dog to wear a muzzle. This is a great step by step on getting your dog comfortable putting on and wearing a muzzle.

Note: the muzzles show in this video are Baskerville muzzles, and are sized too small for regular wear, however these are still a good size to train and condition your dog.

It is also important to note that Baskerville muzzles are not bite proof.

Luna-American Pit bull Terrier.- 3.5 years

Likes to eat things she shouldn’t, and is fearful of strangers (vet).

"I can go on off leash hikes knowing my dog is not going to eat something harmful on trails, and focus on other tasks around the house knowing my dog isn’t eating/tearing up something she shouldn’t; my vet can also safely and confidently handle my fearful dog and she doesn’t have to wear the “cone of shame” during hospital stays (she will eat her IV catheter without the muzzle)."

About Muzzle Training & Tips:

‼️They are the ONLY reputable source to gain accurate recommendations for proper muzzle sizing and brand including muzzle companies/distributors and an opposing muzzle sizing group on Facebook.

‼️They are an educational group, it is primarily answered by mods/admins or experienced members. Wrong information will be corrected/deleted.
Over the last few months their admins have spent a (ridiculously) huge amount of time making sure this group can help everyone as quickly and accurately as possible.

‼️They all love helping people and know how much it sucks to have to buy muzzle after muzzle because you can’t find the right fit.

‼️To give a quick run down on how they help size (a lot more goes into the decision like looking at charts and comparing to other dogs in the same size)
1. You post with your measurements and pic or they ask to get your measurements using their handy guide
2. They double and sometimes triple check these measurements are correct
3. Take them measurements to the group chat and discuss with the other mods
4. Come to a decision on what muzzles may fit (using accurate size charts) and make sure they all simultaneously agree.
5. Give a full and detailed reply on what brand/style/size, why it may or not work, the accurate measurements of the muzzle and where/how to buy.

‼️There is also a public link in their announcements that has everything you need to know about muzzle training/sizing/modifying etc. without having to ask the group. Please give it a read through upon joining!

Thank you and enjoy!

Muzzle Monday!

Olivia - GSD Mix - 2.5 years

Safe handling at the vet, and confidence for owner during unpredictable situations.

"Thanks to muzzling, both my dog's confidence and my own has grown tremendously. When we have kids or off-leash dogs approach us, I can successfully deal with the situation without panicking and having my own anxiety. Thanks to muzzling and my own confidence growing, my dog feels comfortable with having me deal with situations instead of taking it into her own hands. Muzzling has really and truly helped both of us have more confidence in situations we typically wouldn't be."
