Suppose you fed bees simple sugar syrup year round. Those bees get lazy and don’t forage natural food sources like trees & flowers. Then those bees are making honey out of…Yup! You guessed it! Regular sugar. If your honey is cheap, it’s probably mostly sugar. We give our bees sugar water when they first arrive. They burn it as energy in their first flights to find food in early spring. All the buds are still tight, so it’s harder to find food. In a couple of days—the blooms will burst open and we take the sugar away. We don’t raise lazy bees! 👁👁 Just an observation…

🍀 We spray weeds in the spring.
🌼 Dandelions & wildflowers are the bees first food.
🌱 We add chemicals to make lawns and gardens grow.
🐟 Chemicals run off and unbalance our waters.
🙈 We are sad when we don’t want to swim in ugly algae blooms during the summer.

♻️ We can’t help but see patterns.

Our AZ hive, aka the “bee shed”, is basically a little farm. And, where there’s farm, there’s mice, chipmunks and all the little critters. Cleaning out the shed we knew we had a resident mouse family and they are most likely up in the roof. Within the first 24 hours of the new bees moving in, they are already taking care of business! Kirby found a dead mouse on the ground in front of the hive with a puffed face. Recreating the crime scene, the mouse probably stuck it’s nose in the entrance and was stung to death! Less than a day in their new home and they are territorial! We love how pristine bees keep their hive. There’s no room for a messy mouse in the house!!

It was just too sad to go inside. It’s been about 4 months. The last time we were in the hive we smelled the smell, did an inspection and found all the mites. They sucked the life (literally) out of our bees. We are always hopeful we’ll get them to overwinter. Back on the horse, right?
