Insects love arugula just as much as we do. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to destroy a row of greens or arugula bc of the damage from insects. As organic growers, we keep our farm 100% chemical free. Instead of spraying the soil and crops with poison we built these inexpensive tunnels. I don’t know if they’ll work but it’s better than the alternative 🌱🌱

It feels like weeks since we’ve seen the sun. The cold, dark rainy days seem to be dragging on forever. The good news is that we just passed the winter solstice! The days will only get longer from here! ☀️

We survived the first snow! We only had about 2.5 inches but none of the tunnels collapsed👏👏🎉🇺🇸

This winter I will be testing different methods to keep the greenhouse warm. Fossil fuels have become way too expensive, and with zero insulation on the plastic tunnels a furnace would run 24/7. We built a compost pile at the far end of the tunnel and ran corrugated pipe through the center of the pile. A small solar fan will move the hot air from the top of the tunnel through the pile where it will pick up more heat from the compost, then circulate it throughout the space. The idea is to keep the ground and roots from freezing overnight. 👨‍🔬🔬🧬
