🐈 Firstly & most importantly is my love for cats!! I am constantly learning about them & trying to see the world through their eyes-they still fascinate me everyday 😻

🐈 I'm a qualified veterinary nurse with 12 years experience & a wealth of knowledge behind me πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

🐈 I've a keen interest in all things associated with feline behaviour & recently completed a certificate in feline fear & anxiety & what I don't know I'm always eager to learn! πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“

🐈 I'm reliable & trustworthy 😊

🐈 Regular updates are provided should you request them while away πŸ“Έ

🐈 I just get them! It could be my years being around them in work or growing up with them from a young age, but even the incredibly shy timid ones will come out of their shells around me πŸ₯° Hence the nickname "cat whisperer" in work!

If you would like any further information on my cat-sitting service you can dm me & I will get back to you as soon as possible 😊

Why does cat faeces smell so bad? πŸ€”

A conversation I had with a client yesterday got me thinking about this very question! Cats are carnivores naturally, which means their food is often rich in protein. Their digestive system is built differently than that of us humans & other animals, meaning their ability to break down protein & fats is more efficient which results in a rather smelly faeces πŸ‘ƒ

Healthy cat faeces will smell but it shouldn't stink up the whole house & if it smells like rotten eggs, iron or is so potent it's difficult to be in the same room as it then this is abnormal. Pungent faeces can be an indicator of disease or an underlying issue; such as digestive disorders, parasite burden or dietary intolerances for example.

Any concerns regarding a change in your cat's faecal smell/shape/colour then you should speak to your vet who will advise on the next appropriate steps to take πŸ’œ

Cat behaviour consultations 🌟

Ive always had a keen interest in all things feline, particularly feline behaviour- anyone that knows me well will know this! πŸˆβ€β¬›

Having recently completed a certificate in feline fear, anxiety & aggression I would like to share that knowledge with pet owners struggling with problem cat behaviour. It's important to mention that any sudden changes in a cat's behaviour could be a sign of an underlying health problem & I advise the cat be examined by a vet & that firstly ruled outπŸ§‘β€βš•οΈπŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

If you would like to book in for a consultation with me regarding a behavioural issue you are experiencing with your cat, you can email me on [email protected] πŸ’œ

Every day really is a school day for me as a veterinary nurse πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

Delighted to have completed this certificate which will not only benefit me in my job and the countless cats I meet on a day to day basis, some of which can be quite anxious as they are away from the familiar surroundings of their home, but also for those more timid cats I may encounter while cat-sitting 🐈

Knowledge is powerful 🐱 πŸ’œ

Katniss never got the memo when it comes to retracting her claws! πŸ™ˆ

This is usually taught by the kittens mother, but if they are weaned earlier than usual then they may miss out on this lesson.

As Katniss is a rescue I am unsure of her background but it's likely that this was the case with her.

Katniss is a super affectionate cat, but it is fair to say that her love does hurt alot of the time! πŸ€£πŸ’œ

Have you ever noticed your cat eating grass? 🐈

If your cat is anything like my three at home then the answer is yes! The occasional nibble of grass isn't anything to be too concerned about & it is in fact thought to serve a valuable function ✨️

Cats will often eat grass to trigger emesis in order to rid their digestive tract of something unpleasant or inedible. It can also be a way of removing hairballs from their digestive system, if they aren't vomited up, then the extra fibre in grass can aid in their passage through the body. Another theory is that cats eat grass for the nutrients in it.

If your cat is an outdoor cat it's important to ensure they don't consume grass that has been chemically treated. All house plants are toxic to cats & most are poisonous & our curious cats will often be tempted to taste them so it's important they are kept out of sight of the prying eyes of our feline friends πŸ‘€πŸ’œ

The slow blink 😌

Cat's eyes are extremely expressive & they can tell us alot about how they are feeling in that moment. It is thought that a slow-blink from a cat is their version of a kiss, whether this is or isn't true behavioural experts do agree that in the right environment it is a sign of calm & affection 😍

A slow-blink cat kiss is a totally non aggressive display that can be shown to convey affection towards a human or animal family member. I first learned about this from cat behaviourist Jackson Galaxy who has a number of videos on the subject matter if you would like to learn more. He encourages us to slow-blink back at our cats to help them feel at ease & show our love & affection towards them ❀️

Whether you do believe it or not- don't knock it until you try it! 😘

Cats love boxes πŸ“¦

A cat carrier is a type of box so why do some cats hate them?! The answer is pretty simple, cats have excellent memories so if the only occasion they ever see that cat carrier for is something they find unpleasant & anxiety provoking then they will always look at their cat carrier as a threat! I have a few simple tips that can help make the cat carrier your cat's new favourite toy πŸ€—

✨️ Leave the cat carrier out in your cat's territory with a nice blanket & some of their favourite toys in it, the cat carrier will pick up their familiar scent pretty quickly & they will start to use it as a den & no longer be afraid of it

✨️ If food is the way to your cat's heart, then treats can be used to encourage your cat into or near the cat carrier. This can eventually be worked up to feeding them in the cat carrier & finally closing the cat carrier door for a short time with them comfortably inside. It's important to slowly build up to this point & only do it when the cat is 100% relaxed & ready, we want to make this all a pleasant non scary experience

✨️ When purchasing a cat carrier you may be swayed into getting the biggest one out there for your cat's comfort but actually cat's prefer to feel their backs up against something for security- in the wild it meant they couldn't be attacked from behind which was a pretty clever tactic if you ask me! As a general rule a cat carrier one & a half times the size of the cat is adequate as long as they have enough room to stand up & turn around. To make a kitten more comfortable simply line the cat carrier with a thick towel or blanket which will prevent them sliding around it

Hopefully these tips will help your cat begin to view their cat carrier in a whole new light πŸ’œ

Does the thought of getting your cat into their cat carrier to leave the house when you're going away on trips give both you & your cat anxiety?

I have the purrfect solution πŸ’‘

StayCATion with Melissa πŸ€—

My cat-sitting service includes:

🌟 One free initial meet & greet consultation once a booking has been made
🌟 Twice daily visits
🌟 One on one interaction & playtime (if that's what your cat enjoys)
🌟 Oral medication administration if required
🌟 Regular updates/photos
