This is a video of Jess, off lead, playing with Ashley on our training field, with 6 other dogs off lead. 18 months ago Ashley and Jess wouldn’t even be on the field with other dogs if they were off lead!
I’ve been working with Ashley and Jess for about 18 months, when I first met them, Jess was really dog and people reactive (lunging, barking and up on her back legs!) Ashley was at her whits end and in tears.
This is her story in her words:
1. Prior to training with Kim, I had seen 2 other trainers to work on Jess’ reactivity (something I believe was caused by lack of correct socialisation due to covid), the first trainer had Jess in for residential training for 2 weeks and was positive only, he had her off lead for the majority of that time and when we collected her we saw a massive difference, she was enjoying working for him (with no distractions), but we returned home and she was back to her old ways lunging, up on her back legs and barking at other dogs and people.
2. So I found the 2nd trainer, who was more of a “compulsion” trainer, he corrected so strongly that when we saw him at a later date, Jess hid behind my legs!
3. I’ve been working with Kim for around 18 months now taking a more balanced approach using positive reinforcement, but still correcting when needed. Kim has given me so much more confidence to train and Jess has improved massively, she’s still not “fixed”, and I’m ok with that. Sometimes I even think I’d be bored if she wasn’t the way she is! I hand feed her and we train 2-3 times a day usually, our relationship has improved tenfold. There has been times in the past I would feel so down about her reactivity but now I’m grateful for her and how much I’ve learnt so far.
Well done Ashley and Jess, well done!
