Backpacking with dogs is an incredible experience! And there are some things I learned the hard way that could’ve made those early trips more enjoyable for both of us!
Here are four I wish I knew when we got started:
1️⃣ Bring freeze-dried raw food - It’s lightweight, nutritious, and worth the investment for keeping your dog fueled on the trail.
2️⃣ Prioritize your dog’s sleep system - If your dog is cold or uncomfortable at night, neither of you will get quality rest, and recovery suffers.
3️⃣ Pack for weather changes - Even if the forecast looks clear, always bring gear for rain, wind, or snow. Conditions shift fast in the backcountry.
4️⃣ Plan rest breaks - At home, dogs sleep 12+ hours a day. Long, uninterrupted hiking days are tough on them, even if they seem eager to keep going.
These lessons came with my own experience, so I hope they can help you prepare better for your own dog adventures!
