I have a little wren's nest over the outside light. It's a great place for a nest and yet a very bad place to be. I am so worried because the babies will fledge into the bushes just to the left and hang around there being shown the ropes by their parents ..... so far so fine but, urgh, I've got to keep Luna inside for over a week only going out with her on a lead because she loves to crunch on a fledgling 🫣 she is a horrible hunter of a spaniel. I keep telling the birds not to nest in our garden and the blackbirds listened this time but this little wren is new.

I am sad. Because May and June were so cold the Mason bees were late to hatch and, despite a 99.9% hatch rate from over 500 cocoons, this wet and chilly weather meant a massive drop in bee activity. When we finally had some warmth the later leaf-cutters had hatched and this over-lapped with the Mason bees final nesting efforts. Because I had almost zero tubes to collect in May/June these final ones were are the only tubes I have to collect. But Leaf-cutters do not appreciate Mason bees and clear out their carefully filled tubes - kicking out the eggs and pollen stores. I decided to check all my tubes today and remove any that have something in to try and save my population. Last year I had 117 filled Mason bee tubes and 3 leaf-cutter. This year its 52 to 11.

Nature's tough!! This Leaf-cutter doesn't want any old nesting tube she wants one already occupied by a Mason Bee! There's finally a bit of action now the weather is warmer but nowhere near as manic as 2023. I just hope I can get a good stock of cocoons for next year.

Last year my bee hotels were a-buzz during June - every day I was removing several tubes and I could sit and watch my little friends busy carrying pollen into the tubes, travelling back and forth from the flowers, tucking their eggs into their pollen beds. This year ..... ?? I gave friends around 200 cocoons leaving 500 odd for here. 99% have hatched. I have loads off pollen rich plants selected specially for solitary bees so there is no lack of flowers for them but the hotels are silent. Is it the wet, chillier weather? Will my bees die off before their eggs have been deposited? Is it too cold? I al so worried for my little fluffy chums. I am sadder than I expected. Does anyone know where my bees have gone?

I know we are all sick of the rain this year but boy have my roses enjoyed it! Even the miserable ones growing in the hedge out front has perked up and is covered in blooms. I am storing them up for the annual forage boxes coming out in a month's time.
