Hedgie Help #3: Do NOT breed when your are not ready or capable of caring for a mom and its babies (hoglets). We were sold a pregnant hedgie, Luna, last week and were not told how far along she was with her pregnancy. She exhibited signs of neglect and possible abuse. (You can read her story in an earlier post.) Sadly, just after 5 days, she gave birth and was not ready, so we have lost her babies and are praying for her healing.

Please think about this whenever you buy or breed hedgehogs. They are more than just pets, or money makers for some, they are living, breathing beings. 🦔💕

Hedgie Help #2

Spend time with your hedgehogs consistently. Only handle them twice a day, once in the morning and evening for at least 15 mins each. Let them sleep uninterrupted for up to 18 hours. It takes time, but soon enough, your hedgie will learn to trust and love you. 🦔💕

Before buying a hedgie friend, make sure you have lots of burrowing materials and toys. Many, especially in the Philippines, prefer wood shavings because it is more affordable and disposable. Mr. Grumpnut prefers cloth because it is soft, does not get in his quills, and does not inhabit mites as readily as wood and wood shavings. Always remember your hedgie’s health is essential, mainly since we have limited vet services for hedgehogs in Bacolod. Stay hiffin! 🦔💕
