Common Symptoms - Part 2

Atrophy behind the shoulder/of the trapezius muscle is extremely common to see at every level of riding and is caused when the saddle is fitting to the wither angle, as well as trees that are too narrow in the width (different than the angle). When a saddle tree is too narrow, it leaves no room for the lateral movement of the spine, as well as the flexion of the muscles during movement. An excess of pressure limits the blood flow and utilization of the muscle, both causing atrophy as well as an altered gait and posture that directly conflicts with the development of a healthy athlete. Abnormal posture is quite insidious in that it has a domino effect on other structures within the body, causing early wear and tear and additional impact and concussion on delicate structures along with compensatory muscling and an overall upside down way of going. A horse who is heavy on the forehand, leaning into the hands, dropped in the ribcage and not able to utilize the thoracic sling is predisposed to problems ranging from the poll to the hind legs if posture is not corrected.

Lack of mobility in the pelvis, pulling themselves along with the brachiocephalic muscle, ewe necked, sharp and angular topline as opposed to soft and round, heavy on the fore, prone to tripping, disunited, the list goes on.

Checking to see if a saddle pinches at the withers is fairly easy and straight forward. First and foremost you want to check the gap between the withers and the pommel, not just the vertical gap but also how much space is on the sides. You'd want to see a bare minimum of a 2 finger gap all the way around the withers (from one side, over the top, to the other). Secondly, the placement of the panels and the angle of the tree, with many panels placed too high namely due to the fact that the gullet points are simply too short in many saddles. Think of the trapezius as a river, and the arms of the gullet plate a bridge that needs to extend beyond the width of the river to not disturb the flow. Short tree points typically end within the trapezius, a muscle we know should not be carrying the weight of the rider, and as such, you see the atrophy as mentioned above. Ideally, the contact of your panel (and the tree points) begins 4" down from the edge of the spine where the D-ring of your saddle is, allowing the trapezius enough room to flex and develop without impingement.

One of the greatest joys is engaging the next generation in all things equine. The round pen provides a great starting ground for this. A round pen is a place where lessons are learned graciously, mistakes can be made, boundaries are set, confidence is built, and relationships are established!

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.”

PEMF Success story coming at you!

We went in for our 10 day post-surgery checkup this morning. Caden’s doctor was amazed at the new bone growth from only 10 days of healing. Caden’s had roughly 4-5 full body(low MFS) sessions. He said he has never seen this much healing so fast.

In addition to amazing healing, Caden was off of all pain management meds 3 days after surgery.

Don’t think that PEMF is just for soreness and wound healing, bone regeneration is REAL!

It’s fall y’all! ❤️🍁

We love this time of year where mornings are crisp, calves are fat, and cow ponies get outside miles.

This mare has made so much progress over the past year. If you are in the market for a small adult horse or intermediate kids horse, keep your eye on this one. She will be offered for sale late this winter or early spring.

18 days of healing with PEMF therapy! ❤️❤️

This sweet filly had an accident and tore her common digital extensor tendon, while she won’t be riding sound she will heal well enough to live out her days as a broodmare. I love watching the body heal when it has the proper energy to heal correctly.

Who doesn’t love a good before and after?

This gelding came very long in the toe, unbalanced ,and collapsed heels. When horses aren’t stood up and rocked back on their heels it puts a ton of strain on their deep digital flexor tendon among others. We also noticed that it created excess pressure on his knees because his break over was so long. We were able to get him stood back up with better heel support. However, it will take time and several shoeings to get him stood up where we want him. Proof that proper hoof care is always a work in progress. We feel so blessed to have the opportunity to help improve the quality of life horses!

Check this stout, pretty, gelding out. We are so excited to have him in for a tune up. He will also be looking for a new zip code in the near future.

He came to us a little cinchy and has made amazing progress this last week. He’s your typical gelding, sweet, easy to catch, with a big soft eye, and a big beautiful mover. We’ll get additional videos posted later this week. PM for additional details!
