A quick clip of Daisy practicing her place work around other dogs! “Place” is a safe space and provides her with a sense of security while also incorporating her brain by giving her a job to do. I could not be more proud of her! 🌼🐶📚⭐️ _____________________________________________

Lots of smooches from some of my favorite pooches! Happy Valentines Day! 💋🐶♥️
Daisy did a great job today working on her focused heel, automatic sit and eye contact around other pups! As you may remember, she had a tendency to be insecure and reactive around dogs and we are so proud of her progress! You can see that I am sure to keep her on my left side through the whole video, assuring her that there is no reason to flee to my other side which has more distance from the dogs. This also builds strong trust between the two of us as it is my job to keep her safe. It teaches her that she does not need to take matters into her own hands through reactivity. Great job little lady! 🌼🐶💛 _____________________________________________

November 17 marked two years from when I first started The Canine Classroom! We had our first day of Dayschool here on that date in 2020 and have been learning and growing ever since! I am so grateful for all of the pups that I have been able to work with and the families I have been able to teach how to build the best relationship they can have with by their furry family members. I could not be more excited for many more days of training and learning to come and for our next chapter! Thank you to all of you for making it possible for me to pursue my passion and share my lifelong love for dogs. I could not be more thankful to be able to call this a career 🐾📚⭐️🐶
Gizmo has certainly come a long way since his first day here in class! In the first and third clips you can see how distractible and oblivious to leash pressure he was. I started him in a slip line to teach him leash pressure and gradually introduced the prong collar after that. Alongside that work, I was also rewarding and promoting engagement with whoever was on the end of the leash. Here you can see it in action and it’s clear the difference proper equipment and redirection of focus can make! Great job buddy! 📚⭐️🐶 _____________________________________________

Recall is arguably the most important weapon in any dog owners arsenal, but why? The answer is as simple as this, SAFETY. Take the following scenarios for example:
🔹Your dog is running into the street or towards traffic
🔹There is an on-leash dog who is selective, reactive or aggressive and does not want their personal space intruded on
🔹Your dog is running away when spooked
🔹There is wildlife that should not be approached
🔹Your dog is engaging in inappropriate play and needs to reset
🔹 Your dog is about to get into something that they shouldn’t
We can all agree that when it comes to the well-being of of our dogs, we may know a bit better than them in any of these scenarios. That is where our recall comes into play. It’s up to us to have a solid recall on our pups before we remove the leash to keep our pups and others around us safe and feeling secure. So what can you do to accomplish this?
🔸Keep your dog on a leash until you have a bulletproof recall, especially in more distracting environments - You don’t want to be the owner shouting “He/she is friendly!” When your pup won’t come back
🔸Practice your recall at home and make it fun!
🔸Ask me about e-collar and off-leash training 😉
Great job to all of the kiddos featured here, I am so proud of you guys!

Otis’s first day of place work! He is very enthusiastic and food driven so he’s a blast to work with! Here you can see some different teaching and guidance techniques such as food luring and spatial pressure. It’s important to start young pups at a slow pace and make sure you mark and reward as soon as they make the right choice. It’s also important to make sure you mark that correct choice before they make a mistake so timing is everything! I’m excited to continue on with this little tyke during his boarding school stay with us! 🐾📚🐶🍎 _____________________________________________

This sweet lady Piper just graduated this past weekend and she’s got just about every kind of drive you can imagine: food drive, praise drive and of course PREY DRIVE! I found a lot of success in treadmill training and the flirt pole which you can see being used here. You can think of it as a giant cat toy and it has so many benefits including the following:
🔹A great form of exercise that will tire your pup out without having to formally walk them
🔹 A great practice of impulse control and a test of obedience. In this video you may notice that at the beginning I have her sit and look before the toy goes flying again. We also added in a release command of “out” and a “leave it”
🔹 Tying into the previous point, it’s tests their impulse control and obedience in a high state of arousal and helps to develop and “off” switch
🔹 You can use this type of exercise as a prerequisite for high energy or reactive dogs before you go on a walk to get them engaged with you before adding more distractions that may challenge them
🔹 An incredible way to bond and build a leadership relationship with your pup
Miss Piper did so well with this type of stimulation and it made her work hard to make sure she could get the lure moving again. Not to mention, she could have lots of fun in the process (and I got a kick out of it too!) This is just another way to make training fun and engaging for everyone involved!
