Let’s talk about recall. ( come when called ) why is this such a vital skill for a dog?
I would say that having a dog that knows how to come when called is one of the most important life skills that can be taught.
This skill can literally save your dogs life. Perhaps you have a dog that’s a door dasher or jumps out of your car without waiting?
That can be a major issue in populated areas as the dog could run out into traffic, be approached by other unfriendly dogs, eat something that’s toxic or run off and not come back.
Having a solid recall is literally a life savor for your dog and so important to teach.
When you teach this always use a high reinforcement. ( cheese, hotdogs, yogurt, canned dog food ) we always want the dog to find us the most reinforcing.
If you practice this often and in controlled settings you will build what is called reinforcement history.
It’s essentially like a habit. The dog will come to you because they associate you with positive rewards.
Here I am starting Riley out young. Notice she is on a long line, as she hasn’t mastered this skill and I’m all about safety 🙂
We will continue to work on this through out her life! Because, we really never stop learning! With time, she will just become more and more reliable.
