Been a minute since I’ve posted. But I’ve seen two different people in my feed trying to get their pet back after being legally adopted out by a shelter. I hope you know what I’m going to beg… please get your pets chipped and keep that chip info updated. This will help shelters, who are already overworked, from having to go through this.
Stray holds I’m the state of Tennessee are 3 days without identification and 7 days with identification. This means they are allowed to re-home (or euthanize) and animal if the owner cannot be located.
Additionally they hold no legal obligation to negotiate or arrange the return of your pet. Yes, this sucks but there just aren’t laws in place to assist. Some states have laws that require you to license your pet. As a matter of fact, the City of Chattanooga requires your pet to be licensed. While it might not be enforced, this is another way your pet can be returned to you safely and without legal interference. Keep in mind, it’s different in the county, and there are several cities and towns within Hamilton County… Collegedale, East Brainerd, East Chattanooga, East Ridge, Lakesite, Lookout Mountain, Middle Valley, Ooltewah, Red Bank, Ridgeside, Signal Mountain, Soddy-Daisy, and Walden. Each of these may have different policies regarding pet ownership and recovery.
1. Educate yourself
2. Get your pet chipped by your vet or other animal care facility
3. License your pet.
Chipping your pet is low cost and does NOT require memberships so don’t let anyone tell you differently.
There are even discounted chip clinics throughout the year.
BOTTOM LINE: while your pet being an escape artist is not your fault, you can do things to make it’s return easier.
