Cheyenne🏔️!

I can’t believe it’s only been a week since I picked this girl up! ❤️ She is super smart and is settling into domestic life great! She can been caught, led, groomed, saddled, or more! We have also been working on simple ground work maneuvers, and she is picking them up fast. She is a sensitive mare, which has come in handy when teaching her to move off pressure, but it also means more desensitizing. Although she was scared in the beginning, she is now fine with tarps, flags, and all my crazy shenanigans 🤪.

She even gave her first lesson to friend of mine who wants to learn how to gentle mustangs. I was super proud of both of them! 😊

Can’t wait to see what the rest of the journey brings, and I know Cheyenne is going to the perfect partner!

America's Next Top Youth Trainer 2024

Introducing #2385

She is a 3 year old blue roan mare from Salt Wells Creek, WY and will be my partner for America's Next Top Youth Trainer 2024! I will be training her until September, then heading to compete in Lexington at the Kentucky Horse Park.

I’m super excited to get to know her! So far, she has been super calm, loaded like a pro, and already sniffed my hand in the trailer.

I was lucky to get such a beautiful mare, and I can’t wait to get training!

Roux and I were featured on the Extreme Mustang Makeover page! We had so much fun with our freestyle and were honored to win res. champ!

I had the best time yesterday at Sam Vanfleet's clinic!

Phoenix and I both learned a ton, and it was amazing to meet Sam who has been my role model since owning a mustang was just a dream I had! She is such an amazing clinician, and I definitely recommend that you jump on any chance that you have to work with her!

Roux also came with his new owner, and they both learned a lot as well!

Wow! What an amazing past few days!

Roux and I came in 7th overall, and needless to say I am beyond proud of my little boy! What I am most proud of, however, is our freestyle where we came in 2nd out of 46 competitors! We also came in 9th in trail and 12th in handling and conditioning. While we definitely weren’t perfect, Roux tried his heart out, and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.

I definitely couldn’t have done this without my amazing family, trainer Cory Bourque Horsemanship, and friends who have helped me along the way, so thank you!! Also, big thank you to my sponsor, Glittermarx Ponies for adding an extra sparkle to my freestyle!

Roux has found the best new home, and he will be going to live there today. While I will definitely miss him, I’m glad that he has found a new mom that already loves him, and he isn’t that far from me. I will be able to still see him and work with him. And, because I can’t just take a break, I came home with my newest mustang partner, Reba! She competed in the adult division and will become my personal horse\show horse!

Update: Roux has found a great new home for after the makeover!

Are you looking for an awesome yearling that could go any direction?
If so, Roux is your guy! Roux is a 13.1 (should finish around 15hh) bay gelding from Pancake, NV that is UTD on vaccines and Coggins. He is my draw for the 2023 Tennessee Extreme Mustang Makeover, so he would be available following the makeover. He could be picked up in Franklin, TN on June 25th or in Maurice, LA after that.
Until old enough to ride, Roux would make a great liberty, showmanship, in-hand showing or companion horse as he is one of the sweetest horses and has a solid groundwork foundation. Once old enough to ride, I could see this guy going literally any direction. He has a solid mind and already knows some advanced maneuvers for his age, which could go on to help him in the show ring later. He also has the build and scope of an English prospect, and I could definitely see him excelling in the hunter/jumper or eventing disciplines.
Roux has been trained using natural horsemanship and knows how to lunge wtc, sidepass, back an L, leg yield at walk or trot, stop fast, and more with just a neck rope or at liberty! He also knows tricks such as the lay down, sit, Spanish walk, spin, stand on a pedestal, bow and some more that I am keeping for a surprise in my freestyle! I’ve desensitized him to almost everything I could think of including being completely wrapped up with a tarp at liberty! He has been hauled at least once a week since I’ve had him and has already attended multiple clinics, an overnight horse camp, and has already been shown in-hand.

Exactly one year ago today I picked up a tiny, sick sorrel mustang yearling with only two years of horse experience and never having worked with horse that wasn’t at least deemed “kid safe.” Who knew that little yearling would change my perspective on horses and be my favorite horse ever to train! We have taught each other so much and he truly wants to learn. We have gone farther in a year than I ever could have dreamed. I’m so thankful to have this horse in my life! He has been amazing ambassador for mustangs and will change people’s perspectives of mustang with his sweet, laid-back attitude. Happy gotcha day to my goofy, smart, lovable little Phoenix!

Roux day one vs. now 🤩

It’s been 45 days with Roux, and we have both learned a lot!
Roux has took all the crazy stuff I’ve thrown at him in stride and taught me a bunch in the process! Roux has learned basic and advanced tasks like the side pass to and away, the leg yield, backing an L, ground driving, standing tied everywhere, pivoting, working with another horse, free lunging, basic liberty, and more! He has also learned some tricks including the lay down, sitting on a beanbag, Spanish walk, and spin. We are also currently working on some special tricks for our freestyle, which I am really excited about! He’s been hauled to horse camp, a show, a clinic, and just about everywhere else I could think to haul him! While we’ve had our ups and downs, Roux has worked through everything I’ve asked of him really well. The last 45 days have gone by so quickly, and I can’t believe that we are almost halfway through our time together!

Roux’s first show!

Roux showed in three classes and was amazing considering that he was wild just over a month ago! He came home with first in youth showmanship, 3rd in yearling trail, and 5th in lunge-line.

I also showed Phoenix, and he came home with two firsts in pony in-hand trail and in-hand jumping and 4th in all age showmanship.

These two little mustangs were amazing advocates for their breed. I’m so proud of these two! Remember that Roux could be yours after the makeover! Somebody is going to get a really special horse!

Roux’s new trick ❤️

Wow, Roux has blown me away with how much a horse can learn in just two weeks! This week he really opened up, and has learned so many many things including sitting on a beanbag, stepping up on a pedastool, tying, the beginnings of a side pass, and has been let out in a 1 acre pasture. He also had his first outing this week! As I got to know him, however, I realized he is very wary of new people, so this is something we are really going to have to work on, but I can’t believe how much different he already is from the terrified baby I picked up just two weeks ago!

Remember that Roux will be looking for a new home this summer, and I am happy to answer any questions!

It‘s been one week with Roux!

This guy has learned so much and is completely different horse than what I had at the beginning of this week. For the first few days, I thought he was going to be a harder mustang as he was very skittish and resistant to halter pressure, but by Tuesday he had really opened up! He can now be haltered, led, loaded in a trailer, is used to a tarp, knows basic groundwork and has came out of his pen. We still have a long way to go, and I can’t wait to see where the remainder of our time together will take us!
