Our black beauty nymphs are doing so well we had over 120! Some of them are now going to be on display at Oxford University Museum of Natural History as part of their HOPE (Heritage Outreach and Preservation of Entomology) project. But we still have nearly 100 left if you’d like some!

We got some cool pictures of the black beauties using a macro and microscope lens!
Thank you Beetle breeder UK for my beautiful pair of Eudicella hornimani! 🤩 Hopefully they’ll have some larvae!🤞 🪲
We’re currently breeding five types of isopod! Right now we have
porcellio scaber (wild type) and porcellio laevis (dairy cow) available. We also have porcellio laevis (orange), armadillidium vulgare (wild type) and armadillidium officinalis (Greek). If we manage to breed these they should be available soon. We’ll also have isopod starter kits available in the next few weeks for any new isopod keepers!
We’ve had an amazing day at the central invertebrate show today! We bought some beautiful Ivory millipedes and isopods we’re hoping to breed and their babies might be available soon! Thank you The Spider Shop for all the invertebrates and equipment and thank you to The Insect Farm for the larvae and helpful information!
Black beauty stick insect (Peruphasma schultei) care guide
Black beauties are an endangered species of stick insect native to Peru. Males are small and only grow to around 4cm females are usually around 5-6cm and more chunky. They can live up to one year. They occasionally spray an irritating substance when threatened but as long as your careful when handling they’re quite calm.
Enclosure:
All stick insects need an enclosure with a mesh top that they can easily grip onto because when they moult they hang upside down off the top. You can either use a glass or plastic tank with a mesh top or a net enclosure.
This is the net enclosure we use.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08MB7SNGJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This one can house plenty of nymphs or five adults. There are larger net enclosures like this if you want more than two.
Feeding and watering:
They can be fed either privet or honeysuckle leaves but be careful when picking them that you aren’t taking them from a bush that might have pesticides on. If the bush is on the side of the pavement take the leaves from higher up as sometimes the pavement is sprayed with w**d killer. You should always wash the leaves anyway.
They should be fed whenever the leaves wilt which can be as long as a week for privet but usually every few days for honeysuckle. To get your leaves to last a longer put them in a pot of water. Your stick insects might drown if you leave the pot fully open so we us a jar with a hole drilled in the lid to poke the stem through.
For water you should never add a water dish as they can drown easily. Instead you should spray the enclosure with a spray bottle about once a week.
Breeding:
If you have a male and a female you will probably get lots of eggs. Once a week take all the eggs out and if you decide you want babies and can take care of them then put the eggs in a well ventilated tub with kitchen towel at the bottom. Keep the kitchen towel damp with a spray bottle and a few months later tiny little babies should start hatching. If you don’t want babies or don’t want to hatch all of them then put the eggs in the freezer overnight and then dispose of them. This is the most humane way of stopping them from hatching.
So all you need for taking care of black beauties is an enclosure, a jar of water, a food plant and a spray bottle!
If you have any questions you can always message us.
Our dairy cow isopods are breeding like rabbits!!
We now have over 100 baby black beauty stick insects nearly ready for new homes!
