Keeping an Eye on the Target: Maintaining a Mission Ready K9.... This is one of Dr. Erica Boling's articles that appeared in the United States Police Canine Association's magazine, The Canine Courier, and we wanted to share!

Many of us love our high drive working dogs. There is nothing better than directing all that intensity, drive and energy into the work that they do. Whether it’s staying focused on the job while searching for drugs under high distractions or not letting go of the suspect when engaged in a fight, the highly focused and driven canine is one that every handler desires. There are a number of downsides, however, when working a dog that has so much drive.

These types of dogs keep us constantly on our toes, and their recklessness can put them at a higher risk of injury. Their high drive can also make it challenging to detect injuries. I frequently hear handlers claim that their dogs have such high drive that they don’t show pain. I argue, however, that they do show pain. The problem is that we are not typically trained or skilled in identifying early signs of soreness.

Having a “critical eye” for detecting subtle signs of soreness and pain is not a skill that most people naturally have. It is, however, a skill that we can develop. It’s an essential skill that all handlers should strive to develop because catching early signs of soreness and pain can prevent injuries from becoming chronic and severe.

Controlled Chaos: Guidelines for Increasing Stamina and Endurance... This is one of Erica Boling's articles that appeared in the United States Police Canine Association's magazine, The Canine Courier, and we wanted to share!

*******************

For a working canine to reach his or her full working potential, training for both stamina and endurance is needed. A dog with excellent stamina and endurance will search better, track longer, fight harder and stay more focused than a dog that is less fit.

Although we frequently use the terms interchangeably, stamina and endurance refer to two different things when discussing exercise and fitness. Endurance refers to the maximum amount of time that a given group of muscles can perform a certain action. An example of this is a dog being able to track for one hour without physically fatiguing compared to an out of shape dog that tires after 15 minutes.

Stamina refers to the amount of time that a given muscle or group of muscles can perform at maximum capacity. An example of this would be how long your dog can maintain maximum speed while sprinting or how long your dog can maintain maximum pressure on the suit when biting a decoy.

A training program that emphasizes both physical endurance and stamina is essential if we want our canine partners to reach and maintain peak performance. Of course, mental endurance and stamina are also important when it comes to working efficiently and effectively. The good news is that a dog in excellent physical condition can better withstand the mental challenges compared to a dog that is less fit.

Golden retriever study suggests neutering affects dog health

Neutering, and the age at which a dog is neutered, may affect the animal’s risk for developing certain cancers and joint diseases, according to a new study of golden retrievers by a team of researchers at the University of California, Davis. The study, which examined the health records of 759 gold...

Spaying female and castrating male dogs, hereinafter referred to as neutering, is a US convention for the first year in the dog's life. Research on 35 breeds of dogs revealed that early neutering increases risks of joint disorders, such as hip dysplasia (HD), elbow dysplasia (ED), or cranial cruciat...

It’s a beautiful day in Maine today and the official kickoff to summer!

It’s a big holiday weekend here in the USA, and we wanted to share a few reminders and tips to help keep everybody safe as temperatures rise!

Do you know the early (and often very subtle) signs of both heat distress and water intoxication?

Watch for Signs of Heat Distress! Early detection can be lifesaving when it comes to heat injury and heatstroke!

Recognizing the signs of heat distress is your first line of defense. Cool your dog down immediately if you see these signs!

There are a lot of misconceptions on how to properly cool your dog. Cold water or even giving your dog ice water to drink is not bad! Using slushy ice water to wet your dog down with a towel can also help.

Overheating can start subtly: your dog's tongue lolls a bit longer and wider as the sides of their mouth pull back widely. You might notice your dog panting more than normal, stops paying attention to you, and/or starts to seek out shade. Pay attention to these changes!

As the condition escalates, you might notice the following:

- Excessive drooling
- An unusually wide or flat tongue
- Gums that have turned too red (or too pale)
- Glazed eyes and unfocused attention
- Unsteady or wobbly on their feet
- Heatstroke pushes a dog into the danger zone. It can also present as confusion, weakness, vomiting, or diarrhea.

The most dangerous signs are the ones you can't see — the internal body temperature soaring to levels that can damage organs.

This is a medical emergency; if you suspect heatstroke, your immediate priority is to get to a veterinary hospital as quickly as possible.
