Guess who's got a birthday? 🎉🎂🐿️

Baetril was approximately 6-7 weeks old when we took over his care from the wildlife center. A kind lady saw him fall from his tree and land on her garage roof and did the right thing by bringing him to a rehabber right away. He was being treated with antibiotics for a puncture wound when we picked him up from the center, so he was already getting special treatment from the beginning.

He was the friendliest baby out of the bunch we took in last September. He was already showing signs of malocclusion, and he developed an abscess on his cheek shortly after we took him in. The subsequent treatment further isolated him from the other babies in the bunch, and this worked in our favor to create a strong bond between him and us.

We love our little boy, and even though it's only been 2 days since he bit someone, we can't imagine our lives without this furball. 💖 It truly took a village to save this guy between his finder, the senior rehabbers at the wildlife center, the vet technicians who drained his abscess, and Mom, Dad, and Grandma, and he was totally worth it.

Squirrels are not good pets for many reasons, and it's illegal to keep them in many areas unless you are licensed to do so. Social media will make it look like squirrels are so sweet, but they are still wild animals regardless of how long they have been inside a house, and their personalities can vary widely just like humans with only a very small percentage being calm and the majority becoming more protective of their area and nasty about it. A healthy squirrel deserves a free life outdoors where it will be much happier.

Baetril is maloccluded and cannot be released.

Always contact a rehabber for advice if you find wildlife in need of assistance.

Here's a throwback to last October when Aurawra was being a jerk during a feeding and bit Dad's hand hard to steal a syringe from him. He let her keep it while he attended to washing the bloody mess of his hand, and this is what she ended up doing to the syringe. She looked quite pleased with herself. 😈

It's crazy how different squirrel personalities can be, but you better believe that we're very thankful that Baetril is not like Aurawra!

These babies were being raised for release outdoors as they were still drinking formula and were too small to survive outside on their own. They were released in October 2023 with the exception of Baetril who is maloccluded and can't be released. Always contact a rehabber for advice if you find wildlife in need of assistance.

Healthy squirrels should not be kept as pets because it is often illegal to do so, and they are still wild animals with wild instincts. Domesticated squirrels are a myth because it takes over 20 generations of breeding desired traits into an animal to fully domesticate it. A squirrel that is comfortable living in a house with humans does not make it domesticated, and it does not mean that it is not wild.

We are posting throwbacks of our fall 2023 group of babies who were released in October interspersed with current footage of Baetril who is maloccluded and cannot be released. Always contact a rehabber for advice if you find wildlife in need of assistance.

Here's a cute shot of Robert getting a soak to ease his bathroom troubles. After being fed the wrong formula for days by his finder, he suffered from bad diarrhea and malnutrition. While the diarrhea eventually cleared up and he started gaining weight, he was left with an inflamed re**um that would get clogged with dried f***s, so we had to soak him every day for awhile to help him out. He grew up to be healthy and strong, so it was worth it!

Baby Baetril from September was sleeping very soundly that day. 💖 His poor cheek was still swollen from an abscess that was later drained by a vet.

Did you know that few vets work with or treat wildlife? We are fortunate to have one close by that works with the center, but that practice is the only one across the area who will see wildlife. Baetril is one lucky squirrel!

Baetril was always a happy little guy, even while he was suffering with the abscess on his face. He was reaching for the deer antler that was just outside of this frame, so he didn't quite get it.

We went to the center yesterday only to find out that somehow the door to the release cage for our babies was left open a few days ago. They tried to shut it once it was discovered but only trapped 3 squirrels inside, 2 of which are not ours and are from a different release cage that was opened recently. 😳 We heard Robert chasing away another smaller squirrel high up in the trees nearby, so the first two pictures are of him. The 3rd picture is of Aurawra, who was looking for nuts that had fallen. The last picture is of the 2 young ones from the other release cage who got trapped with Spunky, who has claimed the nest box inside for herself and was hunkered down for our visit. Magnum was not spotted, but there are a ton of squirrels out and about the center right now going about their business storing nuts for the winter. The center always leaves food out for the wildlife anyway, so they will be ok. Hopefully our guys moved into a nest box nearby.

Obviously this was not the kind of release we wanted, but this batch of squirrels was more than ready to explore the outdoors and are certainly big enough to survive. They are currently about 15 weeks old.

Side note, chocolate isn't great for squirrels and neither is all the sugar, which is hard for them to metabolize. Hope he enjoyed this one time treat!

Chi Chi as a baby compared to Chi Chi shortly before she was released. Her coat was mostly grey when she was younger, so if you told us that she would be this brown as an adult, we would never have believed it! She had a rough start in the beginning, being severely underweight for her age from starvation. While she was always the smallest one out of the group, she did grow up to be a healthy adult and was notably the fastest. ⚡

These babies were raised in the spring of 2023, are all grown up now, and were released in June. The best way to get still photos of these guys is when they're on the toilet. 😅 While they used the toilet quite a lot, it took a lot of training, and they were not consistent about it, especially once they were outside of the cage. As a general rule, they don't like to potty near where they sleep because the smell can attract predators, and mothers will stimulate young ones and ingest the waste in order to keep the nest clean.

Baby Chonk let it all hang out for his nap back in April 😂 The other photos are of Chonk shortly after he left the release cage for the first time in June, then a few days later... with a screenshot of a recent interaction placed in between.

Lately we have been getting way too many comments yelling at us for keeping wild animals in cages and telling us to set these babies free. It's getting very tiring trying to explain that babies this small wouldn't survive in the wild for very long because they would be prime targets for predators due to their awkward mobility at this age, and they also would be starving as their teeth aren't fully developed yet and they need Mom to nurse them. We have often said that you don't normally see babies this size in the wild because they don't leave their nests unless they need help.

Because squirrel moms are the best, you can often try to reunite babies with their mothers before intervening to find them a rehabber who can eventually release them outside, which is what we do. Why the cage? Because would you want an animal the size of a hamster running loose in your house? There are so many dangers in a house that people don't think about. Things can fall on them, they can drown in water, they can chew through electric wires, some have escaped through windows, others have had their tails been amputated by people who accidentally stepped on them... And this is under the assumption that there are no other animals in the house that could potentially hurt the little ones who need to be fed every few hours.

While our content mostly displays these babies during their younger stages, we do eventually soft release them outside near the wildlife center by us. We try to put the same disclaimer in the caption, but people are quick to judge and not even read it. If you made it this far, thank you! We appreciate you! 💖 Sorry for venting, but it's Monday 😂

Chonk is all grown up now and was released along with his foster siblings a few weeks ago. They have been living the good life outdoors and were so happy to be running in the trees. 💖

Yesterday's visit showed that all of our babies made it out of the release cage with hardly any sign of where they went. It doesn't look like they went back to eat either as what is in their cage is hardly touched, and there is a lot of food available outside right now. We did spot Chonk, who came back to eat at one of the other areas where food is left out, but he ran off when a car drove by. We might have seen Chi Chi hiding up in the trees not too far from the release cage, but she hid herself well, as squirrels do.

Most exciting of all was that we think we saw Pimplewhisker who was released in June 2021! Check the comments to see a picture of the squirrel we saw versus pictures of him as a baby. Do you think it's him?

Another pregnant squirrel we saw reminded us a little of Mischief, who was also released with Pimplewhisker, but maybe that was wishful thinking. Honestly it's much harder to identify our babies post release when there are so many squirrels in the property! 😅

How Tubthumper got his name! 😊 His shaky little foot kept hitting his belly while he slept, although Silverfoot next to him looked less than amused about it. Bumblesnout and Rustopher are snuggled and dreaming peacefully next to him.

Babies are so sweet when they are young but require very specific things that are not always readily available at a store. Please be responsible and always contact a rehabber whenever you find wildlife in need of care. The sooner you can get the animal to an expert, the better the outcome will be for the animal. Often times people try to take care of these little ones based off (incorrect) information they found online, and the babies end up even more sick. By the time they decide to take them to a rehabber, it is sometimes too late to save them.

Also, squirrels are not suitable pets, so it's almost never a good idea to not release them outside eventually. Don't think they will always stay like they were as babies because the tales of them growing into attackers because their wild instincts kicked in far outnumber the stories of how sweet and loveable they are!
