It's ! 😊 Baetril can be very tall when he stands straight up. We've tried to put a ruler next to him to get a measurement, but he immediately moves to look at it. 😅

It has been 0 days since he bit someone. Despite Dad's efforts to wash up and change into old clothes after Sunday morning church, Baetril started sniffing his hand and Dad was deemed an impostor. He bit him a few times in a short period, accompanied by growls and scratches. Mom's attempt to wash up before seeing him later in the day (with about 4 hours in between showering and seeing him) was also thwarted by another attack and chattering. Mind you, in both instances, Baetril jumped on us as normal to be escorted to the kitchen and then escorted back to his room, but once he took the time to sniff the hand that feeds him... ☠️

Squirrels are not good pets for many reasons, and it's illegal to keep them in many areas unless you are licensed to do so. Social media will make it look like squirrels are so sweet, but they are still wild animals regardless of how long they have been inside a house, and their personalities can vary widely just like humans with only a very small percentage being calm and the majority becoming more protective of their area and nasty about it. A healthy squirrel deserves a free life outdoors where it will be much happier.

Baetril enjoys the sights as he looks out the door. We feel awful that he can't be released, but he would not survive outside because his teeth do not line up properly. We need to intervene and trim his incisors every few weeks.

It has been 9 days since he bit someone, but he came close to breaking his streak when Mom was trying to keep him from licking the stove. Whatever Grandma made earlier must have been tasty!

Social media will make it look like squirrels are so sweet, but they are still wild animals regardless of how long they have been inside a house, and their personalities can vary widely just like humans with only a very small percentage being calm and the majority becoming more protective of their area and nasty about it. A healthy squirrel deserves a free life outdoors where it will be much happier.

The wizard wasn't expecting Baetril to become his familiar! 😂

It has been 13 days since Baetril has bitten someone. 🙌 He had some questionable moments yesterday though. We were doing a very thorough clean of his room, and he was quick to dig up the walnut and hazelnut that he had buried so he could relocate them elsewhere. ☠️ He was back to his feisty ways, chasing us away even though we were keeping our distance, and attacking feet. It's amazing how protective he gets over his treasures!

It has been 4 days since he bit someone, although it's arguable if he bit Mom yesterday because he was chewing on her hand for a bit before he relaxed and started grooming her instead. 🧐 He was definitely in a mood and had already scratched her face when he pulled her glasses off suddenly. He just barely missed her eye, but it shows how unpredictable squirrels can be.

Baetril is having a relaxing weekend chilling out. Hope you get to, too!

Always be responsible and contact a rehabber as soon as possible if you find any wildlife in need of assistance. Not only is it in the best interest of the animal, but it is illegal to keep wildlife in your house in many areas unless you are licensed to do so.

Baetril in one of his more cuddly moments. If he's not chilling with us, he's running laps all over the house. Squirrels can cover several acres of territory in a day, but we would love to see exactly how far he runs around!

Here's a throwback to last October when Aurawra was being a jerk during a feeding and bit Dad's hand hard to steal a syringe from him. He let her keep it while he attended to washing the bloody mess of his hand, and this is what she ended up doing to the syringe. She looked quite pleased with herself. 😈

It's crazy how different squirrel personalities can be, but you better believe that we're very thankful that Baetril is not like Aurawra!

Baetril doesn't always chill on the pile of blankets in his room, but he certainly looks comfy when he does!

Healthy squirrels should not be kept as pets because it is often illegal to do so, and they are still wild animals with wild instincts. Domesticated squirrels are a myth because it takes over 20 generations of breeding desired traits into an animal to fully domesticate it. A squirrel that is comfortable living in a house with humans does not make it domesticated, and it does not mean that it is not wild.

We are posting throwbacks of our fall 2023 group of babies who were released in October interspersed with current footage of Baetril who is maloccluded and cannot be released. Always contact a rehabber for advice if you find wildlife in need of assistance.
