🐾 Woof of the Week 🐾

Meet Blue-Dog! 🐶✨ Blue-Dog has made incredible strides in her training journey with us at Raise the Woof Dog Training. We've seen significant improvements in her leash walking, crate training, and she's no longer reactive towards neighbors or people walking by in the neighborhood!

When I used to show up for our sessions, Blue-Dog would bark at me, but now she greets me with excitement and a beautiful sit. Her recall is amazing too; when we say "here," she comes right over! We've even started working on the place cue and creating distance.

Blue-Dog, you’re a superstar! Keep up the fantastic work! 🌟👏

🌪️🐶 Hurricane Season Safety Tips for Your Dogs! 🐶🌪️

As hurricane season approaches, it's important to ensure that our pets are prepared and safe. Here are some essential tips to keep your furry friends secure during storms:

Emergency Kit: Prepare a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, a leash, collar, and important documents (like vaccination records).

Safe Shelter: Make sure you have a designated safe space in your home for your dog during a storm. This could be an interior room away from windows.

ID Tags and Microchips: Ensure your dog’s ID tags are up-to-date and consider microchipping them. In case they get lost, this will help reunite you quickly.

Evacuation Plan: Plan ahead for possible evacuations. Know pet-friendly shelters or hotels and have a transport plan ready. Having your pup crate trained can be invaluable during an evacuation. It provides them a sense of security and makes transportation easier. We recommend Impact Dog Crates for their durability and safety.

Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather updates and have a battery-powered radio handy. Be ready to act quickly if the situation changes.

Calming Aids: Consider using calming aids such as anxiety vests or natural supplements to help your dog stay calm during the storm.

Let’s make sure our pets are as prepared as we are this hurricane season. Stay safe, everyone!

🌞🐶 Important Reminder for Pet Owners: Keep Your Dogs Safe in the Heat! 🐶🌞

As temperatures rise, it's crucial to be aware of the dangers that the heat pose to our furry friends. Here are some essential tips to keep your dog safe during hot weather:
Know the Signs of Heat Stroke: Look out for heavy panting, excessive drooling, weakness, vomiting, and unresponsiveness. If you suspect heat stroke, move your dog to a cool area and seek veterinary help immediately.

Never Leave Dogs in a Parked Car: Even with windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can skyrocket in minutes, leading to fatal heat stroke.
Limit Exercise on Hot Days: Avoid vigorous exercise during peak heat hours. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it's cooler.
Stay Hydrated: Always have fresh, cool water available for your dog. Hydration is key to preventing heat-related illnesses.
Provide Shade: Ensure your dog has access to shaded areas if they are outside.
Protect Their Paws: Concrete and asphalt can become scorching hot and burn your dog's paws. Test surfaces with your hand – if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them!

Let's keep our beloved pets safe and comfortable during the summer months! 🐾❤️

Contrary to the old saying, older dogs can absolutely learn new tricks! Dogs learn by association, meaning they can link cues or actions with rewards (positive reinforcement), making consistency in training crucial.

Training with your pup, old or new, also boosts their confidence and strengthens your bond.

No matter their age, you can start any time, so get out there & build that bond, and grow both your and their knowledge. 🐾✨

🐾 Did you know? Dogs have a special “third eyelid” called the haw or nictitating membrane. This translucent lid is located in the inner corner of their eyes and helps protect and moisten the eyes. It's like a built-in windshield wiper, keeping their vision clear and free of debris while they play and explore! 👀🐶

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday: Teaching the "Leave it" Cue! 🐾

Is your dog too curious for their own good? The "Leave it" cue can help! This essential command teaches your dog to ignore distractions and focus on you. Here’s a simple guide to get started:

Hold a Treat in Each Hand: Show your dog one closed fist with a treat inside.

Say "Leave it": As soon as they stop trying to get the treat and pull back, reward them with the treat from your other hand.

Repeat and Practice: Consistency is key! Practice this in different scenarios and gradually increase the difficulty.
With patience and practice, your dog will learn to leave tempting objects alone and look to you for guidance. 🐶✨

Share your training journey with us using and let’s celebrate those wins together! 🎉

🌈 A Look Through Their Eyes: Human Vision vs. Dog Vision! 🐾

👁️ Humans:
We see the world in a vibrant array of colors, thanks to three types of color receptors (cones) in our eyes. 🌍
Our cones are sensitive to red, green, and blue light, allowing us to perceive millions of color combinations. 🌈
From the deep reds of a sunset to the lush greens of a forest, our world is a kaleidoscope of hues! 🍂🌳

🐶 Dogs:
Our furry friends see things a bit differently! 🐕
Dogs have only two types of color receptors, making their color vision similar to a human with red-green color blindness. 🟢🔴
They primarily see shades of blue and yellow, but reds and greens appear more as grays and browns. 🟦🟨

💡 Fun Fact:
While dogs may not see all the colors we do, their vision is superb in low light, and they are excellent at detecting motion! 🌌🏃‍♂️

Introduction to the Bell: Hang a bell by the door at your dog's nose level. Let your dog sniff and explore it.

Positive Reinforcement: Each time your dog touches the bell, give a treat and praise.

Introduce your Cue: Once your dog is comfortable touching the bell, introduce a verbal cue such as "Ring the bell", “Potty”, or "Outside."

Remember: Consistency is Key
Whenever your dog rings the bell successfully, respond by opening the door and taking them outside to their designated potty spot.
Use verbal praise, treats, and additional rewards when your dog eliminates outside.
Consistently reinforce this behavior by following the bell ringing with the opportunity to go outside for potty breaks.

With patience and consistency, your dog will learn to associate ringing the bell with going outside to eliminate.

🌟 Fun Fact Friday 🌟

Did you know some dogs can jump as high as 6 feet? 🐕🌟 That's right! Certain breeds, like the Border Collie and Belgian Malinois, are known for their incredible jumping abilities. 🐾💨

Not all jumping is bad! 😉 While we want our pups to refrain from jumping on guests, they can still jump high for fun and training:

Agility courses: Perfect for those canine athletes! 🏃‍♀️🏅
Competitive sports: Like dock diving and flyball. 🎾🌊

🐾 Woof of the Week: Meet Preston! 🐾

Preston is a sweet rescue dog that his mom adopted a few months back. They've been working hard on his training, and he's making great progress! 🐶✨

✅ No more jumping on guests!
✅ Mastering "place"
✅ Leash walking like a pro
✅ Loading up and out of the car all by himself

Preston's biggest challenge now is staying focused when cars or anything with wheels are around, but he's improving every day. He's also learning a fun new trick: rolling over! 🎉

Way to go, Preston! Keep up the great work! 💙🐕

Does your dog overreact to exciting stimuli, bark, and lunge at passing objects or people? Don’t worry, your pup isn't bad, just needs a new way to react to triggers.

Introducing the "Open Bar" technique! Here's how it works:

Spot the Trigger: When your dog sees something that usually sets him off, start giving treats before he reacts.
Keep the Treats Coming: Continue treating while the trigger is present.
Stop When It’s Gone: Once the trigger disappears, stop the treats.
On walks, carry tasty treats and focus on your dog when you see a trigger. At home, use controlled situations with visitors to reinforce this behavior.

Remember, practice makes perfect! Start from a safe distance and gradually reduce it. Always prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety. With consistent training, you'll see amazing progress! 🐾✨

Dogs have incredibly sensitive hearing! 🐶👂 They can hear sounds up to four times farther away than humans. That’s why your pup can hear you opening the treat jar from the other side of the house! 🍪🏠

Training Tip: Use your dog’s super-hearing to your advantage! Use distinct, consistent sounds or words for commands. This helps them understand and respond faster. 📣👏

Bonus Fact: Dogs can also hear higher-pitched sounds that are completely inaudible to us. 🐕🎶 So, next time your dog perks up its ears for what seems like no reason, remember—they’re just using their super-hearing powers!

🐾 Training Tips for Loose Leash Walking 🐕✨

Use a Proper Harness or Collar: Ensure your dog is wearing a comfortable, well-fitted harness or collar to prevent discomfort and provide better control.

Treats and Rewards: Bring along some tasty treats. Reward your dog for walking by your side with a loose leash. Positive reinforcement makes learning fun and effective!

Stop and Go: When your dog starts to pull, stop walking immediately. Wait until the leash is loose again, and then start walking. Your dog will learn that pulling doesn't get them where they want to go.

Consistency is Key: Practice loose leash walking regularly. Consistency helps reinforce the behavior and turns it into a habit.

Keep Sessions Short: Start with short walks and gradually increase the duration as your dog improves. Patience and persistence are essential!

Enjoy stress-free walks and strengthen your bond with your furry friend! 🐾❤️

Every moment spent training your furry friend is an opportunity to strengthen your bond and deepen your connection. It's not just about teaching commands or correcting behavior—it's about building a relationship based on trust, respect, and love.

Through patience and consistency, you and your dog learn to understand each other better. Training becomes a shared language, a way to communicate and grow together. It's a beautiful process of discovery and mutual respect.
