In my own home, this is a minor injury. I know where our first-aid supplies are in a blink. 👍

But in a client's home? 😖

Still minor! I always ask where first-aid supplies are, but when trying to avoid bleeding on the floor, I go straight for my own kit. Yeah, I carry a kit in my housesitting bags, as well as my daily walking bag.

There's something very reassuring, and calming, and professional, about being prepared.

I don't need 3 big puppers picking up on my panic and anxiety while hobbling around my client's house, reading the notes they've provided, trying not to bleed on the floor while I look for antiseptic and bandaids.

Did you know...

We have received a few questions about how to know if a skunk is going to spray. We are definitely the experts, especially with so many in the clinic right now!

🚨 Warning Signs a Skunk Might Spray:
Skunks don’t want to spray—they only do it when they feel truly threatened. But they will give you a few clear warnings first:

Stomping their front feet – This is your biggest heads-up. They’re saying, “Back off.”

Hissing or growling – Audible signs of distress.

Raised tail – Like a warning flag. If it goes up, it’s time to back away—quickly and calmly.

Turning their rear toward you – They might do a handstand or twist around to aim. That’s the last step before they spray.

💡 How to Avoid Getting Sprayed:
Stay calm and move slowly away.

Don’t yell, run, or make sudden movements.

Never corner a skunk—always give them an easy escape route.

If it’s nighttime and you’re walking a pet, use a flashlight to spot them early.

🦨 Fun Fact:
Skunks only carry enough spray for about 5–6 shots and it can take over a week to refill. So they’re not using it unless they have to.
