My snow buddies today. ❤️ Those last two pictures... the wet spot on my jeans is where Kelso (the steer) gave me a kiss (big lick), and that spot on my sleeve, Kelso eye goobers from him turning his head and leaning in to me to give me a hug. OMG, he hugged me!! ❤️🐮

While the ice accumulates outside and the various police departments warn people to stay home and off the roads, these 2 are tucked away safely and warmly in their home. Their parents don't have to worry about someone getting to them for their care, because they have me here.

The most difficult part of Millie's morning is having to wait 30 minutes for breakfast after her brother takes his meds.

She chose Zen over frustrated barking this morning.

Helpful information about the foxes you may be seeing in your neighborhood, no matter where you live!

Foxes and Mange: What You Need to Know 🦊

Over the past few weeks, we’ve received a number of calls about foxes showing signs of mange— a skin condition caused by mites. We want to address some of the most common questions we’ve been getting and share what we’re doing to help these animals.

Should I Be Concerned if I See a Fox?
Foxes are naturally wary of people, but if you spot one that doesn’t seem afraid, it may have become accustomed to humans, possibly because someone has been feeding it. These foxes may approach you or act boldly, but they’re easy to scare away. Simply make loud noises, blow a whistle, sq**rt them with water (a hose or sq**rt gun works great), or toss a harmless object like a tennis ball in their direction.

Are Foxes a Threat to My Pets?
Generally, foxes don’t pose a threat to dogs or adult cats. However, very small dogs or kittens (under 5 lbs) may be at risk, as foxes can see them as prey. Foxes usually avoid conflict and will keep their distance if a human is present. They typically hunt small animals like rabbits, birds, rodents, and frogs, not pets. As long as you’re present to discourage any interaction, attacks on pets are very rare.

Can My Pets Get Mange from Foxes?
Although mange is highly contagious among dogs, it’s very rare for dogs to catch it from urban foxes. That said, we recommend practicing safe pet habits. If you know a fox is frequently visiting your property, it’s a good idea to keep your dog away from that area until the fox moves on.

Is It Normal for Foxes to Be in the City or Active During the Day?
Yes! Foxes are often seen during the day, especially in urban areas where they hunt for food like squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Urban foxes are more common than you might think and are typically shy, staying in the shadows and avoiding conflict with humans. So, seeing a fox out and about during daylight hours isn’t necessarily a cause for concern.

What Are We Doing to Help?
Our office has been actively working to assist foxes suffering from mange in the area. Foxes are elusive and cover large territories, so trapping them is difficult, but we’re committed to helping where we can—whether by trapping or medicating them in place.

Please do not feed foxes, intentionally or unintentionally. Processed food can actually worsen their condition. If you’re aware of a fox den or see foxes with mange, or have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at 816-892-3053. If we don’t answer right away, leave a message, and we’ll call you back as soon as possible.
