Here is the first part of my attempt to film a portion of training class. Hopefully this will help you get started training your dog to go to its bed when someone knocks on the door.
“Leave it” is an important part of dog training. This is just step one to introducing the concept. Ringo has seen this command before so he understood very quickly what I was asking. Before anyone says, just go to an area with less distractions, I think it’s important to note that we had spent a few minutes already with more training productivity. Dog training is much more effective if you do 5 minutes of training 5 times a day than 25 minutes of training once. With this training session with Oakley I was reading his body language and it was pretty obvious that his brain was on overload. He was at the point where he couldn’t take in any more new information so I would rather just end a session earlier than expected than get frustrated with training and have an even less productive time. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogsofinstagram
Loose leash walking is something all owners want, but many do not have the patience for. The level of distraction for Oakley was just too much on the bike path so I increased my rate of reward and gave him treats for staying by my side. This is a good exercise to practice if you are trying to teach your dog to pay attention to you and not as much to their surroundings. Teaching dogs good leash manners takes time, patience, and consistency. #looseleashwalking #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips
Distractions can be overwhelming in dog training. With this particular pup he gets pretty anxious in most environments so distractions are a difficult hurdle for training.
For one of today’s training sessions I decided that just a few minutes of focus are worth more then a long and unfocused walk. When he gets distracted my goal is to be more exciting than the distraction and to practice commands he knows very well so he does not have to think too hard about it amidst the high distraction area.
