The Story

On Wednesday 17th June 2020, my mare foaled in the field with no complications and rejected the foal within the first hour. After encouraging her to accept the foal the decision was made after a sleepless night on Thursday 18th June 2020 that they had to be separated. So this is where the story begins

Never have I been in this suitation nor would I like anybody to find themselves in the same suitation. With guidance from my local vet the little tiny foal urgently needed a foster mare.

My Search Began

Facebook was perfect for getting the word out fast for a foster mare as the foal was tiny and time was at the essence to ensure he survives

I had no joy in finding a mare therefore had to bottle feed the foal every hour. Until a friend suggested a goat and another search began and within 20mins I organised to pick up Grace the Goat on 19th June 2020.

Grace the Goat is an Alpine Goat who was kindly lent to me by a lovely family to give my foal the best chances of surviving.

In between times the word was still out about a foster mare and I got a contact number of a lovely guy in Donegal who’s mare sadly lost it’s foal. So on 21st June 2020 off I went to Donegal while family and friends held the fort at home. Sadly this didn’t work out and she was returned home to Donegal

So after a long 1 1/2 weeks(off very little sleep) of feeding and milking Grace the Goat for the foal. He has started trying to feed from her

This is something very special and I want to share with everyone. Nature is a wonderful thing!! It’s not everyday you see a Goat rear a Foal like its one of their own 🤞🏻

I will try and keep everyone updated on Grace the Goat and the Orphaned foal story
