Are Sandfalls Safe For Fish, Shrimp, and Snails - Sandfalls have been around for decades and there are no real concerns with pet safety. Fish will sometimes play in the sandfall, some goldfish and cichlids even appearing to eat the sand, but most fish and shrimp ignore the system. Smaller snails may go thru the sand reservoir with the sand, so it is important that your system is designed to allow any snail that can get thru the sand reservoir to be able to pass thru the entire system.
Since sandfalls are a terrific biological filter they should be run 24/7. Aerobic bacteria live in the sand particles that are constantly flowing thru the water, so they have constant oxygenation. This helps to guard against a total crash of your biological filter during filter maintenance for example.
This generally prevents livestock from swimming into the output of the sandfall. However, when the system is off, smaller fish may be able to swim into the opening, but healthy fish generally do not swim into areas they cannot get back out of. Since most fish can swim backwards if needed, it is unlikely that a healthy fish will get trapped inside the system. Unhealthy fish may seek a place to hide and then die in hidden locations, which is why it is so common to lose fish without seeing them.
So, please enjoy your sandfall, whatever type it may be, with the knowledge that not only are they a beautiful decoration for your tank, but they are also safe for your pets.
Another great customer video of the Eaton Canyon Sandfall. This tank is from a customer of Cuboid Nature Aquarium, a local store that focuses on natural products for all of your aquascaping needs. #cuboidnatureaquarium

Really nice tank from Alex in Germany. While we do not offer our sandfalls outside of North America, Amazon does create listings around the world and if they sell a unit in another country they purchase it from us and then sell it to the customer, without us finding out where it shipped to until after it ships. The problem that Alex discovered was that our pump is rated for 110V/60HZ and Germany operates at 220V/50Hz. Fortunately, he was able to buy an Eheim Compact ON600 in Germany that he says works great with the sandfall. We have updated our Amazon listing to try to make the power requirements clear and are posting this so that potential customers in other countries are aware of this issue. Thanks Alex for making us aware of the problem.
While we are primarily known for our sandfalls, we have also developed a Brine Shrimp Hatcher that is now one of the top rated hatchers on Amazon and probably the best selling daily hatcher on the site as well. The hatcher was developed in conjunction with Greg Sage of Select Aquatics, who is a master breeder of endangered species that has been featured on several you tube videos by Cory McElroy. He has over 40 years of experience hatching brine shrimp for his extensive breeding operations. We have recently released a video version of our hatching guide, so take a look if you are not familiar with our hatcher. Let us know if you have any comments or questions. Just wanted to share a video of Annandale Falls in Grenada that we recently visited and will definitely be an inspiration for future sandfalls. Should have some new sandfall tanks set up in the coming months.

Sutherland Sandfall Kit
Another installation of the Sutherland Sandfall at Cuboid Nature Aquarium.
Our most successful sandfall to date, we are very confident you will enjoy creating a beautiful aquascape with your Sutherland sandfall. However, if you have any issues, please contact us with your concerns and we will try to help. We can no longer respond to reviews on amazon to answer your questions, but we will try to address any concerns on our page and if they are significant we will address on our website as well.
Recently a customer commented that the flat reservoir is a problem. Having designed numerous sandfalls with and without slanted reservoirs, we believe the flat bottom gives the aquascaper the most flexibility. By simply filling the reservoir with more sand, the sand will create the slanted sides as needed to properly fill the reservoir.
Another issue was elbows that did not attach to the tubing. We have not heard of this issue before, but if we are contacted we could easily replace the elbows.
We love to hear your feedback and are always looking to improve our products, so please contact us with any issues.
