Being a hero to someone, even if it is a bird, is a feeling like no other....
Last night at 1:30 AM Leo called for me in pain and in so much stress. I wasted no time letting her out and she immediately jumped in my arms. I could tell from her body shape she was about to lay an egg. I held her close until she laid the egg in my hand. After an exhausting 8 minutes she peacefully fell asleep in my hair and laid close next to me for an hour. After she calmed down I put her back to bed. It was a beautiful experience having her call for me for help and wanting my comfort. This isn't the first time a bird asked for me to comfort them while they lay an egg, I had a chicken when I was a young girl named Red who called to me from across the yard panicking I ran to her and she led me into the barn and asked me to sit down by pecking my shoe and she curled herself up in my lap and she laid her first egg in my lap. Just because they can't speak doesn't mean they can't feel pain and need comfort. I'm so grateful that my birds rely so heavily on me for love and compassion. 🩷

Well well well I have a special announcement ... It looks like Leo is a girl!!🤣 🎀 Leo has been extremely clingy to me the past couple days and I was noticing the signs of egg laying from her body shape and attitude but I wasn't a 100% sure and this afternoon confirmed that 🤣. Leo will still be called Leo however her official name is Leona, I had this name picked out from the start if she turned out to be a girl or Leon if she was a boy. But I stuck with Leo since it is a neutral name 🩷 anyways, she could care less about the egg (thankfully) so it was discarded and Leo is back to her normal self. I don't have any male lovebirds so nothing could happen but I will discourage nesting habits if she continues to lay however she doesn't seem to care about it. So for now Leo will be on a high calcium diet to recoup from all work to make an egg and extra sleep 😴 .

I can't believe in one month Leo will be a year old (I assume, since I had 0 information on him but judging from his appearance I can only guess) and in 2 months it will be a year since i got him . How crazy is that! For all of his new followers, I will introduce Leo again! 😁
Last year while I was scrolling through Facebook marketplace I found an ad for a lovebird who was being kept in the smallest cage I've ever seen, she could barely turn around and she didn't even have a perch. Just a rusted cage that she could barely move in. At that moment I committed to saving her and driving the 8+ hours from NH to NJ to save her. The following morning I got confirmation that I could come and pick her up and so off I went. After hours and hours of anxiously driving to NJ I arrived. Upon my arrival a man walks down the sidewalk with a grocery bag in hand. I had no idea it was the love bird that I was getting inside of this bag, so when he walked up to my vehicle I was completely stunned that he confirms that the bird is inside this grocery bag and again, it's 20 degrees outside in February in New Jersey and this bag was tied shut. It's absolutely freezing and they couldn't breathe. I bring the bag in my car and look inside to take her out. First on the top is the lovebird that I originally came for wrapped in this bag and below her is Leo wrapped in a separate bag. I was horrified and absolutely shocked by what I saw. I had no idea that a baby lovebird was going to be in there. I immediately unwrap them and get them warm. The adult female is stable but cold. She also immediately realized that I'm no threat and almost instantly understands I'm there to help so she calmly sits with me and warms up. Leo was slow and cold. I was unsure if he was going to make it. I placed him in my shirt and hurried to the nearest pet store to get formula and a syringe. Every 3 hours on the way home I stopped at McDonald's to get warm water to make formula for Leo. It was a scary yet wonderful experience raising little Leo and the female bird ended up okay who I later named Nova. Nova found a loving family and Leo stayed with me. Leo is incredibly intelligent and can talk pretty well! He also has such a snappy, silly attitude. Leo has inspired many and touched so many more with his story. This is why I love rescuing. I don't love the sad stuff but in the end I do love a happy ending. I'm so lucky to have Leo. It's crazy that he's almost a year old. Time flies. I hope his story inspired more to rescue. Here he is hanging out with Rupert enjoying lunch together

Stand by your birds (or any animal) and they will stand by you when you need them the most❤️ I have a yucky cold and my lovebird refused to eat his treat that I gave him and instead brought the piece of treat to my face trying to make me eat it so I feel better. He only does this when I don't feel well🥺 I know I make a lot of silly posts about Leo because he's a silly bird! However when it comes down to me not feeling well he always knows and will do the best he can to cheer me up. 🥺🥰

Hi everyone ❤️ little Leo is doing fantastic. He's learned to fly all on his own today without any accidents thus far! He can fly room to room with ease, he's one of the best flyers in the flock 😆. He just took a bath and ate now he's all cozied up in his fav blanket 🥰
