Sharing from a fellow breeder. it’s hard but often a gift to our loved dogs

Every so often, I see a question pop up about whether or not placing retired breeding animals is ethical. To people who aren’t breeders, it often looks bad or feels icky... like breeders are just tossing away dogs once they’ve been used to produce puppies. Let me give you a different perspective...
I receive messages and see posts from the owners of my retired show and breeding dogs every day. While their lives are comfortable with me, they now get to live an incredibly loved and spoiled life, many times as an only dog with a family that adores them. Different isn’t good or bad, it’s just different. They live a different life with their families than they would have with me. They are content, satisfied, and loved with me; they continue to be all of those things, but with their very own people and without having to share those people with a pack of other dogs.
The day I let one of my retired dogs go to a family is HARD. I cry when I let them go... I look forward to updates on birthdays, “gotcha” days, and out of the blue every few months. I see how they are loved beyond measure, and I am grateful every day that my “retired” dogs have been blessed into the lives of the people that love them just as much as I ever did. I’m glad it could be one of mine that they love.
Quality breeders don’t rehome retired breeding dogs because it’s easy. We do it in spite of how hard it is on us because it’s what’s best for them.

🦠There have been 2 cases of Canine Leptospirosis in the Halifax area this week.🦠
When we start hearing this kind of news, it makes it extra important to talk about it.

"Lepto" is a bacterial disease that can be contracted by both canines and humans through the consumption of infected urine. Sounds gross right? Why would you or your dog ever ingest wildlife's urine? It's easier then you think... Wildlife carrying the bacteria such as deer, raccoons, or rodents urinating into stagnant water is the main culprit. This means your dog can come into contact with Lepto simply by drinking from a puddle or even by eating wet grass that was recently urinated on by infected wildlife. Yuck!

Lepto can survive for weeks to months in the environment. Heavy rainfall can exacerbate its spread and since 2023 has been an extremely wet year with tons of heavy rainfall, that makes it an ideal year for Lepto - as it thrives in thrives in warm, wet environments.

So what does Lepto do to your dog and how can you tell? Lepto primarily affects the liver and kidneys, which can ultimately result in life-threatening conditions.

Common clinical signs (which may vary in severity) are as follows:
🦠 Fever
🦠 Decreased appetite
🦠 Vomiting
🦠 Diarrhea
🦠 Increased thirst and urination
🦠 Lethargy or weakness
🦠 Stiffness and soreness
🦠 Dehydration
🦠 Yellowing of the eyes or gums
🦠 Small bleeding under the skin
🦠 Redness in the eyes
🦠 Rapid or difficulty breathing

If you notice any of these signs in your dog contact your vet team immediately to schedule an appointment. Whether it's Lepto or not, your dog needs to be assessed.

No matter where you live in NS, we share our home with wildlife on a daily basis. Be aware of where you go for walks and if you feel your lifestyle puts your dog at risk, the best way to protect your dogs is to vaccinate annually.

Welcome to Half Pint Herders

For as long as I can remember my family has been herding dog enthusiast's. However, always seemed to have an affinity for larger herding dogs , Collies. border collies and livestock guardian dogs like Great pyrenees.

One day while at my almost annual October pilgrimage to Ohio Quarter Horse Congress, I ran into some friends with spectacular mini aussies. A short jaunt over to puppy alley to chat with their breeder and Frankie the now 17 inch blue merle whirlwind became a part of our Pack

A year later Houston was procured from Heart of Gold Aussies and my fate was sealed. Frankie is expecting her first litter in mid November 2020. Our goal is to round up some great forever homes and future herding dog lifers 📷:)

Sticking with my passion for herders I am in the process on adding a future breeding pair of Old Time Scotch Collies to the roster here. There will be separate tab page devoted to Nash and his future mate of imported European heritage as that story unfolds
