Hi all, I’m always getting asked about home borders and kennels.
Looking for more info on kennels and home boarders that people would recommend so I can pass this information on.

Thankyou

Please note that there is blue-green algae present in the lake at Pugneys Country Park. Blue-green algae is hazardous to both people and dogs. We would like to remind visitors not to enter the water or allow your dogs to enter the water.

Hi all.
Unfortunately there’s reports of a nasty sickness & diarrhoea bug that could have links with parvovirus going round dogs in the local area.
As yet I haven’t had any dogs with the illness but wanted to make owners aware.

Symptoms of parvovirus are:
•high temperature
•lethargy
•off food
•vomiting
•diarrhoea (often severe with blood in it)
Dogs with parvo can become dehydrated very quickly, it’s vital if you have any concerns to contact your vets for advice immediately.
Dogs can become infected with parvo through direct contact with an infected dog, its poo or vomit, or something that has itself been in contact with an infected dog, its poo or vomit.

As always I’ll be doing everything I can to minimise any dogs being exposed to any nasty bugs.

I’m politely asking owners to please make themselves aware of the symptoms and please inform me immediately if your dogs show any symptoms.

Unfortunately there’s always a few that make the majority of dog owners look bad and don’t think it’s necessary to clean up after their dogs, now more than ever it’s really important to pick poo up and dispose of it correctly.

Thankyou for your cooperation and understanding.
Fingers crossed none of the gang will get it 🐶

With a week of hot weather predicted please please remember heat can kill your dogs.
Over the weekend I’ve seen dogs left in cars unattended and dogs walked at the hottest times of the day, there’s really no excuse for it.

If you are unsure whether it’s too hot, don’t chance it, your dog won’t hate you for it.
Remember pavements and artificial grass get hot, always check the temperature before letting your dogs on it. If it’s too hot on the back of your hand, it’s definitely too hot for the dogs paws.

Early walks in the shade and house visits will be our way forward this week. As always I’ll be in touch with owners day by day to keep them in the loop but expect totally different schedules to normal.

Be safe 🥵🐶🦮🐕‍🦺🐾☀️

Secrets of a Dog Walker

1. It's a lifestyle, not just a job. If you're in it for the money you've made a big mistake because a) you're never going to be rich, end of story; and b) you won't survive your first winter if that's your only motivation. We see these people come and go from time to time.

2. We talk to each other more than you might think. About the best walking boots, what clothing we are wearing for today's weather, our financial struggles, the traffic, dodgy men in the woods, fallen trees, etc. It's a lonely job but we have each other's backs from a distance.

3. We don't physically have eyes in the backs of our heads but we know so well the sound of every jingle of every ID tag, and every dog's individual footfall on the ground behind us, we may as well have.

4. We can't physically see round corners either, but we know so well each leading dog's body language in reaction to an oncoming person and/or dog that we may as well be able to.

5. We hear "Are they all yours?!" and "Wow you've got your hands full" at least twice a day, but we always smile and say "They keep me on my toes". Every. Single. Time.

6. It actually breaks our heart when a dog moves out of our area, and we thoroughly investigate our replacement for our own peace of mind, even if the client hasn't asked us to. Let's not even talk about when they pass away, we feel every bit of grief too, more than owners might think.

7. If you peel back a few layers of clothing (depending on the season) you will find bruises, scratches and scrapes covering the whole of our bodies. Don't bother asking where they came from, we have no idea.

8. If you see a dog walker looking vaguely presentable on a weekday, you should send help, something is not right.

9. We love our clients' dogs as we do our own and will sometimes lie awake at night worrying about their injuries, illnesses, and behaviour problems. We can't help it after spending so much time with them. It hurts us when clients don't appreciate this.

10. Despiter the financial uncertainty, the harsh winters, the blood, sweat and tears, it really is the best job in the world!

I don’t think I’ll ever get over having the honour to walk such beautiful animals, I pinch myself daily.

Recently I read "If you have a dog walker, you shouldn't have a dog."

This is my boy, he has a dog walker 2 days a week, on my busiest days. The days when I'm too wiped out to offer him the decent romp in lovely natural environments that he deserves.

'Dog walker' is such an understated title.

These guys are the bridge between the modern reality our dogs have been thrust into, that's so at odds with their genetics.

The vast majority of dogs were not born to be content with 15 minute pavement walks, but you need to work to pay the bills. I get it.

Did you know behaviour problems rarely occur in nature?

Our dogs are captive animals.

Sit with that one as long as you need.

They were not designed for sofa snoozing and short restrictive walks on a tight lead on paved ground.

When behaviour problems occur in captive zoo animals, we recognise it as the wrong environment for these animals to thrive....

In dogs, we just shoot for compliance and slap on a lazy excuse like 'dominance' or 'stubborn'.

Good dog walkers are a modern day gift to our dogs, and if you use one, you are an ace guardian who chooses to recognise the innate needs of your dog, and respect them for who they are.

You're not a lazy guardian; you're an enlightened one.

Huge high five to all the dog walkers out there, including my own Paw Legged Friends Dog Walking and Pet Sitting Wakefield - thank you for making our restrictive, modern world a better place for our four legged friends 💛
