Happy thanksgiving 🩃🍁 ! It’s the season for illnesses. There is a potential new canine respiratory disease causing infections throughout the country and we have some potential cases close to home. Although the unknown can be scary, this seems to be an illness that can be mostly prevented by taking proper precautions.

Please do not be frightened by the news articles that are circulating causing fear. Be educated from reputable sources. Be proactive with getting your dogs vaccinated (kennel cough vaccine and canine influenza vaccine should be updated). Be smart about what you expose your dog to- follow the guidelines that are similar to preventing kennel cough. Have your dog examined if they exhibit any symptoms and reach out to your veterinarian with any concerns or questions.

This building has been expanded and added on to several times over the years to accommodate a thriving business. The side of the building is made sturdy and strong of rock from Stone City, IA, and the front lobby windows overlook the colorful fall foliage in a deep valley along the Wapsipinicon River.
Inside the walls is really what is amazing- a family of employees made of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, receptionists, kennel staff, office managers, and others with a single goal of helping animals and their people to make the world a better place. Each person at AVC helps make an impact on a life every single day, but the team as a whole at AVC makes miracles happen and it is a blessing to be a part of it!
Today we are wrapping up a week long celebration of National Veterinary Technicians Week- to celebrate the employees in these walls that are truly by the side of each pet that comes in, ensuring their care, trying to comfort them when they are nervous or sick, monitoring anesthesia and being the first person your pet sees when they recover, administering medication and placing IV catheters, among a million other tasks.
The miracles inside these walls would not happen without our vet techs. Our vet tech team is phenomenal- and we are so lucky to have each and every one working at AVC.
Happy Veterinary Technicians Week!

Some of the best sports quotes relate to leadership, teamwork, and work ethic which can be applied to many aspects of life. I have utilized sports quotes for quite some time now for inspiration in what I do everyday in veterinary medicine. If you have any good quotes to share- post them below

Anyone who owns a pet knows the veterinarian shortage is real. It can be difficult to get a timely appointment and many vets aren’t accepting new clients. The number of owned animals increased drastically during the pandemic. The number of new veterinarians graduating has not increased to meet the demand. In Cedar Rapids our emergency clinic seems to be closed much of the time or have no surgeon if they are open.
We’d like to thank our vet clinic, Anamosa Vet Clinic, for going above and beyond to help local animals. Anamosa does the regular vetting for all of our dogs, does many specialty surgeries, and handles our emergency calls. When we need a referral to a specialist they are always there to help. During the Pandemic when the teaching hospitals were closed, Anamosa helped us figure out a lot of animals that would not have survived without them. These dogs had no other help available to them.
Anamosa has done everything they can to meet the increased demand for vets. They do urgent care hours, you may have to wait in line but your pet will be seen. Other vets are giving people appointment days out. That doesn’t help if your pet is sick.
In addition to helping their own clients, they help many other owners who are not their clients deal with emergencies. They come in at all hours of the night to perform emergency surgeries and almost never get to go home at 6 when the clinic closes. If they are equipped to handle the emergency they tackle it without complaint. Anamosa Vet Clinic is not an emergency vet and is not equipped to handle every emergency. They don’t have staff at the clinic 24x7 and don’t have all the equipment that a true emergency vet needs. We are very thankful they have done everything they are capable of to help our local animals.

Complete closed comminuted fracture of the right femur on a 60 # dog this week- before and after surgery. I never use circlage wire, except in this case where it was a life saver! Circlage wire, IM pin, and 3.5 locking orthopedic plate used to put this one together- now that’s a lot of metal, and a new bionic leg!

Fun in the sun working with new spring calves. We were working in a valley in the sun-notice me sporting some short sleeves. Once we released the cows and calves into the pasture on a hill unblocked from the wind the cold cut through my 4 layers- I’m guessing there was a 30 degree difference.

Since my mom taught me it when I was just a kid- I’ve always tried to live by the golden rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Once you put it into practice- it is easy and gratifying.

Here’s my 2 cents:

I dare you to spread positivity and gratitude. Surround yourself with people that make you a better human. Be contagious.

Throw that entitled, blaming, negativity somewhere far away where the sun doesn’t shine.

Do not attempt to reap rewards or gains through guilt and blame created from false assumptions.

If you don’t understand something that bothers you- study and learn about it, then step up and change it.

When someone is talking to you, look them in the eye and listen. Don’t interrupt, answer your phone, or send a text message in the middle of your conversation- that’s rude.

Respect your elders, guys-open the door for the ladies, help bring back a little chivalry.

It’s okay to be bored, boredom is the prelude to creativity. I tell this to my boys quite often- they don’t like it.

Trust me on this one. If you don’t remember hearing something in a conversation, that doesn’t mean it was never said.

There, I said it

Never forget the unity and amazing acts of heroism that occurred on this day

There were many incredible stories of heroism we will never forget on September 11th, 2001, including the disaster search dogs who used their powerful noses to find survivors from the rubble at Ground Zero and the therapy dogs who provided much-needed comfort to first responders and family members of the victims.

Riley the Golden Retriever, pictured here, was one remarkable dog who assisted in the search and rescue efforts. Riley helped rescue several firefighters from the rubble.

It’s hard to find the right words or the right feelings for the unimaginable happening in Ukraine. My thoughts are with all of the innocent people fighting for freedom and all of the people risking it all to help those who cannot help themselves- including the disabled, the young children, and animals.

I have followed the group Veterinarians Without Boarders for quite sometime with the thought of someday traveling and helping where I can in areas that need veterinary or medical assistance. My thoughts and prayers go out to these 4 volunteers that were killed and their families, and all of the innocent people affected in Ukraine.
The world needs to find a better answer than what is happening now- stand up against evil, stand up for freedom.

We are heartbroken. Our statement on the killing of animal aid volunteers in Ukraine. https://mailchi.mp/vetswithoutborders.ca/statement-on-the-killing-of-volunteers-in-ukraine

23/11/2021

This week I diagnosed and referred a case of quickly progressive (within 1 week) dilated cardiomyopathy in a young dog suspected to be linked to and caused from the diet the pet was being fed, among other possible factors such as genetics. This could have easily been a fatal condition if the dog would not have been aggressively managed with a diuretic CRI and oxygen therapy. Luckily, the update today from the cardiologist was a good update and the pup will be able to go home, but that isn’t always the case. The cardiologist reported that this is a condition that is increasing in frequency and often is either partially or fully reversed with time and a diet change, and many pets are able to eventually either reduce or taper off of the heart medications over time.
There are so many great pet foods out these days, it is impossible to keep up with all of them! However there are certain indications on an ingredient list that may be of concern, even on that high end food, and especially in that grain free food. Please research and talk with your veterinarian on the diet you decide to feed your pet- there are some links below-
