Another virus bites the dust.
Say good by to Calici virus with Nitazoxanide (NTZ)

Cats typically receive a dose of 25 mg/kg every 12-24 hours until the condition resolves.

Should a scheduled dose be missed, it should be administered as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular medication schedule should be continued. Two doses of nitazoxanide should not be administered at the same time.

Nitazoxanide is an antiparasitic agent that is used to treat a variety of protozoa, bacteria, nematodes, and trematodes. It is useful against sarcocystis neurona, giardia, cryptosporidia, and helicobacter pylori.

It is useful against severe Gingivitis, inflammation of the gum or gingiva.

Interesting read for breeders and cat owners. Is this the new normal… for cat breeding. The transmission of SARS-COV-2 from human to cat, is now well documented. Purebred cats are more susceptible to the virus. (This research paper was published in Viruses. Viruses is a peer-reviewed, open access journal of virology, published monthly online by MDPI. The American Society for Virology (ASV))

The lower immunity response to the virus, the ease of transmission for example in the Omicron variant and level of infection in cats vary between the different virus mutations, mirroring the human infection and transmission rates.

There has been an increase of breeders having to stop breeding because they can not manage the continuous outbreak of ‘strange’ respiratory illnesses in their cats and litters.

The secondary infections appear, as the immunity decreases and viral loads increase.

Common secondary infections or diseases that can be observed or tested for are:

Mycoplasma
Upper respiratory infections
Lethargy
Chronic eye infection
Mouth ulcers
Gingivitis, periodontitis
Cough
FIP

This paper was published in 2023, it’s one of the first to discuss what’s going on.

Note: A cat infected with SARS-COV-2, is not the same as a cat infected with FCoV, however with the low immune response to SARS-COV-2, would mean that the FCoV viral load in a SARS-COV-2 infected cat would increase. It is documented that high FCoV viral loads in individual cats and cohorts of cats can lead to the development of the FIP disease in some cases.

Would this explain why there is an increase of FIP and new FIP virus variants in cat around the world?

Our conclusion: Limit how your cat can be exposed to CovID.
Everyone

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 infections in domestic cats have caused concern for both animal health and the potential for inter-species transmission. Cats are known to be susceptible to the Omicron variant and its descendants, however, ...

How To Eliminate the FCoV Virus

How To eliminate the FCoV virus from healthy, virus shedding cats in order to obtain a FCoV free / FIP free cat and cattery by preventing your cat from incubating the disease and developing FIP.

  • Identify the healthy FCoV-infected cats from the negative FCoV- free cats.

  • Take real-time FCoV RT-RCR faeces sample. Infected cats always shed FCoV.
