The blue-backed reed frog (Heterixalus madagascariensis) is endemic to Madagascar. These frogs live in a variety of habitats, from tropical and subtropical dry forests, to tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests, moist savannahs, swamps, freshwater marshes, wet or flooded lowland areas of grasslands and agricultural areas, into urban areas. The conservation status of the species has been assessed as “least concern.” These frogs are popular pets due to their ease of care when set up properly, and they do well in small groups housed together.
