I’ve always been drawn to the beauty and symbolism of the Mexican multi-day holiday, Day of the Dead. It’s a celebration of life and a reminder of our connections to the past.

Dia de Los Mu***os has evolved over time. October 27th has been designated as the Day of the Dead for pets.

I try to celebrate and memorialize my pets every chance I get. So here was our first ofrenda for the holiday (intended to welcome the deceased with an altar of representative items). I hope to learn more about the cultures behind the holiday and improve my altar next year.

my world has been irrevocably altered. i lost esther, my sweet little girl, my only child left friday afternoon to an aggressive carcinoma (cancer).

she deserves a beautiful tribute, but i’m so sick over this i can’t even look at pictures. she’ll get a couple in time- she was my model girl ❤️

last saturday she attended a small community benefit event in oxford put on by and with me and met a TON of kind people- i thank you all for your kind words and all the pets you gave her- she felt the love of complete strangers and I’m grateful for that.

please be patient with me- i want this business to succeed, but my heart has gone through a beating over the last three years and i’m still trying to recover…pet grief is like none other and the resources are lacking.

Hello everyone! It’s been a hot minute.. While I’ve taken a step back to care for and be present for my dog Esther who has terminal carcinoma, I’m still slowly doing dognut things. I spent over 4 hours today cutting and ironing what you see here 🥱

I hope to start posting Halloween and Fall collections over the next week or so. All will be posted on my Etsy shop for purchase. Stay tuned.

Hey everyone it's Ciabatta! I'm a 1-year-old female pitbull mix. I tested well with other dogs and I was non-reactive in the cat room. I know what you're thinking- wasn't she adopted? I was, but before I could go home they decided that the time just wasn't right. I had a couple of other people that might be interested that ended up picking other dogs. It's crazy because I am the most open, gentle, sweet girly in the kennel. I play well with others and I am always happy to see my people. I'm looking for someone that loves me for me- so apply for me today!

Kennels are open Monday-Saturday 11-3:30 pm. Adoptions are still taking place BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, so we recommend coming to the kennels to view the animals only if you are planning to fill out an application. You MUST include proof of home ownership or notarized letter from your landlord WITH your application to be considered. Applications will be reviewed and pre-approved for a subsequent meet and greet/adoption appointment.

We lost our first chi, Taco, Nov 2019. I adopted Esther less than a month later. I lost Chunk, my soulmate, July 2021 (adopted 5/2015). I lost Boo, my warrior Christmas night 2022 (adopted 10/2020). I lost my sweet-pea Rue a year shy of her one year adoptaversary in April of this year.

Esther’s been there for it all. And while I thought her terrible skin allergies and removal of an ulcerated growth (benign) were the biggest of my worries, that all changed last week.

Last month I discovered a lump behind her front leg. It felt solid and attached, so I knew it wouldn’t be good. An aspiration earlier this month confirmed it was mammary carcinoma. I scheduled an echo (RIDICULOUSLY difficult to schedule timely), which finally will happen tomorrow, as she has a small murmur, along with an X-ray. I will need to schedule an ultrasound too.

I was ok until last week when her leg swelled and tumor increased in size (almost double in two weeks). It spread to lymph nodes and is impacting lymphatic drainage. My vet consulted an Oncologist and let’s just say her prognosis is not looking good, nor is her time. I’m crushed.

Keep my girl in your thoughts and prayers as we uncover tomorrow the strength of her heart and I assume get an idea of how far this has metastasized. What’s worse though is if she is good for surgery, which will be to remove her mammary chain and affected nodes, the surgery won’t be for another two weeks. Regardless of removal, the cancer will remain and spread- I’d be buying her a little more time. But that matters to me, as long as she’s not suffering.

Stay tuned for new things to come to the dognut. Despite all this, I’ve started Fall and Holiday collections, and have some new items to hit my feed in coming weeks. Oh, and I finally opened my Etsy shop 😊. Esther and I are going to need all the support we can get!

Tomorrow we are in Glastonbury for the Pet Fair and Dog Adoption Event at 🐾 Jez and I are HUGE adoption advocates and support pet rescue efforts, so we are stoked to be apart of this event. While we have taken a step back, we both have been involved with various non-profits over the years and in many facets. We are still fostering (Jez is a 3x foster failure) and currently call home with six dogs, all rescued- four are Jez’s, one mine, and one foster.

This is a new area in CT for us too 👀 We look forward to meeting new folks and dogs! Come say hi and share some stories of your pet(s) with us 😊
