🐶Physiotherapy for our older dogs this winter❄️

▫️The colder months can make day to day tasks and walks a little more difficult.

▫️ Along with regular physio to help keep your dogs pain, comfort and activity managed, here’s a few tips to help keep your older dogs comfortable:

- ❇️ COATS: especially for the older and thin hair dogs to ensure they maintain body temperature

- ❇️ KEEPING THEM DRY: after a wet or muddy walk, drying them off at home (don’t forget between the paws) prevents dampness which could lead to other health issues affecting their skin.

- ❇️ EVEN GROUND: helping to keep them steady and consistent in their steps. This can be level soft surfaces like short grass or flatter sand. Softer surfaces results in less concussive forces running through the joints

- ❇️ LENGTH OF THE WALK: on a particularly colder day it is best to keep with shorter walks but more frequent for example two 15/20 minute walks instead of one 45minute to an hour walk so that they are not out in the cold for too long and have chance to warm up at home again

Do you notice any of these with your animal?

🐾A lot of these signs refer to dogs but some can apply for horses and cats as well!

🐾Additional signs (in dogs) can include:
- Excessive panting when they are not typically hot or have carried out exercise
- Not weight bearing on a limb during standing
- Not sitting ‘neatly’ and sticking their legs out to the side
- Excessive licking/chewing or fly snapping of an area
- A change in their hair growth and direction of growth

🐾Sometimes signs can be nothing to worry about, but sudden changes in behaviour and movement can be an indication of something more so it is always best to seek veterinary advice if you have concerns!

🐎Your animal does not need to be injured, recovering from surgery or have a pre-existing condition to receive physiotherapy!

✅Incorporating a quarterly physio session is a great way to stay on top of your animals condition, ensuring they maintain good bodily health, function and is a fab form of injury prevention!

🚗We can look at it this way, a car service helps keep the engine flowing and in tip top shape to go about what it needs to do. A physio session can work in the same manner, keeping your animal fit for function and purpose!

🧲What is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy - PEMFT🧲

▫️Commonly used in vet physio practice, this applicator of PEMFT uses a triple coil alignment within the matt with an electrical current running through to create the magnetic field. This in turn stimulates the damaged cells within the body, accelerating healing times. Depending on the tissue being targeted, the pulse rate and frequency of the electrical current is altered.

▫️It generates a significant depth of field, reaching deeper tissues and structures such as the hip joint.

✅It has a multitude of benefits, as displayed above, and is a great piece of kit as it is hands off and non-invasive so is often very suitable for patients who suffer from acute or chronic pain and do not tolerate hands on techniques initially.

A snippet of research supporting the use of PEMFT:

PEMFT has been found to be useful in metabolising damaged bone affected by trauma, particularly in conditions of impairment such as osteoporosis induced diabetes (Bartolomeo., et al. 2022). Similarly, Barnaba et al (2013) found significant results within their human based study in which cellular proliferation of osteoclasts were stimulated greater than that of their control group who were not exposed to PEMFT. This emphasises the advancement of the modality and having a greater understanding generates significant beneficial results during treatment. It has also shown clinical efficacy within the treatment of osteoarthritis,  and by suppressing the inflammatory response and is an adjunct to the management and treatment of pain (Luigi & Tiziano, 2020). This is an especially great complementary approach for non-pharmaceutical pain management.

I use the Biomag from Westville Therapy by Dr David Somerville who has an extensive background in orthopaedic mechanics and research.

❔Why is this important❔

🧠Although it is obvious that when you move, your muscle activity increases compared to standing still, it is important to understand what muscles are activated.

📚This study looked at muscle activity of 3 key muscles of the hindlimb (quadriceps femoris, gluteus medius and biceps femoris) in healthy dogs during various types of therapeutic exercise.

🦵🏻Why these 3 muscles? Well, one reason being they are major hip and stifle (knee) stabilisers but also typically tend to atrophy if there is an orthopaedic disease or injury present; For example arthritis of hindlimb joints, hip dysplasia, cruciate injury and luxating patellar.

🐕As a vet physio, research like this study allows me to see that certain exercises activate some muscles more than others and with many clients presenting with orthopaedic injury, it’s crucial that the therapeutic exercises we carry out in the session and those prescribed at home target those important muscles.

🟣Callie Veterinary Physiotherapy promises to provide an evidence based approach and as such, I would like to share interesting research with clients and fellow practitioners on my platform

🟣What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?

🟣As stated above, veterinary physiotherapy uses a combined approach to managing pain, restoring function, mobility and improving healing and recovery!

🩺Physiotherapy is complementary to conventional veterinary medicine, meaning that many animals on medication can also receive veterinary physiotherapy to help manage their condition further! As a vet physio, I will work closely with your veterinary team to ensure your animals needs are met and maintained to the highest standard!

𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖 𝙛𝙚𝙬 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙮!

Thermotherapy, the application of heat, is used for the purpose of changing soft tissue temperature with the intention of relieving pain.

Conditions where heat application is best include:
🌡️ 𝙊𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙤𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙨
🌡️ 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘 𝙤𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨
🌡️ 𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨
🌡️ 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘 𝙞𝙣𝙟𝙪𝙧𝙮 𝙞.𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨

The products that I have and will include in my practice currently are, The Heat Pad and Thermal Wand, both providing thermal pain relief (posts to follow with more detail on these pieces of equipment!)

There is a plethora of research available supporting the application of heat in veterinary physiotherapy and as a scientific, evidence based practice, I use this to expand my knowledge when suggesting heat as a form of treatment.

❗️As with any form of treatment, there can be cases where contraindications prevent heat from being used on an individual, and as such, clinical reasoning from the vet physio is used.
