When it comes to providing veterinary care for small ruminants like sheep and goats, one of the most frustrating challenges for production can be the management of parasitic infections. Individual farms vary widely in their amount of pasture, availability of other species for pasture rotations, and....

Nigerians and Squamous: is there a genetic link?

UC-Davis Cancer Study Seeks Participants

In fifteen short years since being accepted into the American Dairy Goat Association registry, the Nigerian Dwarf has become America's favorite breed of dairy goat. Nigerians are registered at a rate more than double that of Nubians, the next most popular breed. Many small ruminant vets now treat more Nigerians than any other goat breed, and the breed's unique health concerns are coming under scrutiny.

The Veterinary Genetics Library at UC-Davis is beginning a study on Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the Nigerian Dwarf. SCC appears to strike Nigerians with disproportionate frequency, usually under the tail in the perineal region. The UC-Davis study will explore whether there might be a genetic predisposition to SCC in certain lines in the breed.

If you have clients dealing with SCC in their Nigerian Dwarf herd, particularly if there is more than one case among related animals, consider encouraging them to participate. It could end up being a great service to the breed.

The study is free and confidential, requirements are minimal.
