Tapioca (Kappa) is said to have originated in Brazil. Portugese distributed the crop to Kerala in 17th century.

Tapioca was widely promoted in Kerala during World War 2 by Chithira Thirunal Maharaja and his Governor CP Ramaswamy Iyer. There was a shortage of rice in Kerala at that time as Japanese army captured or destroyed the ships carrying rice from Burma and Indonesia. A large number of people especially labour class accepted tapioca as substitute of rice.

But the history of tapioca planted today in the farm is very simple. Sumesh collected it from his relatives place at Aluva.
