Being a club run by Hound people we understand how busy it is with having shows around the closing date so as Blackpool was yesterday, we have agreed a weeks extension for entries to SYHS.

The new final deadline is now 30th June which helps with pay day too.

Meet The Judge - Heather McKenzie is judging Whippets at our forthcoming open show on Sunday 14th July at Hillstown Village Hall near Bolsover.

Heather was brought up with family dogs and knowledge of whippets from her dad who raced and lure coursed whippets back in the 1980s.

In 2007, Heather went to a local ringcraft training with her whippet puppy ‘Ger’ and caught the showing bug at 13 years old. In 2008 the Aberlark kennel was established and she has been showing whippets ever since.

Heather has travelled all over the UK showing whippets which are jointly owned and bred with her family. She is proud of the success she has had with her dogs at both Championship and Open level with multiple RCCs, Studbook numbers, Best Puppy in Breed, Best Veteran in Breed and a very special Reserve Best Veteran at Whippet of the Year 2022 with her home bred Bitch, Aberlark Cookies N Cream.

Heather began judging whippets in 2015 and thoroughly enjoy the hands on experience. She is very grateful to SYWC for supporting her upcoming judging appointment and thanks to the committee of SYHC for inviting her to judge a breed she loves most.

Meet the Judge - David Knights will be judging Norwegian Elkhounds and Irish Wolfhounds at our forthcoming open show Sunday 14th July at Hillstown Village Hall nr Bolsover.

David grew up with Whippets and Greyhound type dogs and has shown Whippets, Afghans, Basenjis and Finnish Spitz with great success in all four breeds including stud book numbers and challenge certificates.

David awards CCs in 8 hound breeds and have a particular interest in sighthounds and spitz type breeds. He is on the B list for Norwegian Elkhounds and a Level 2 for Irish Wolfhounds having completed their Breed Appreciation Day and passed the multiple Choice Exam. David has judged both breeds several times before at open shows.

He is very much looking forward to judging at South Yorkshire Hound Society having attended several times before as a judge and an exhibitor. David knows it will be an excellent day as the committee run a quality show and thanks the society for the invitation.

Meet the Judge - Ann Beckett-Bradshaw will be judging Greyhounds and Deerhounds at the forthcoming SYHS open show held on Sunday 14th July at Hillstown Village Hall near Bolsover.

Ann spent much of her late teens, managing boarding, breeding and quarantine kennels, but bought her first ‘show’ whippet in 1973 and has had whippets in her life ever since. Her parents also exhibited Afghan Hounds (so there were a few of those too). Miniature Longhaired Dachshunds and a Deerhound joined the Hutaka affix.

Ann campaigned several whippet champions to their titles (including BIS Bournemouth 1988) and owned and bred further CC winners both here, in Europe and the USA.

She first gave whippet CC’s at the Hound Association of Scotland 1992 and judges at CC level regularly, (including Crufts 2016 and Afghan Hounds in 2022) She has judged in Australia, Europe and Scandinavia (including ‘Skokloster’ Sighthound Specialty) and in Italy at the Whippet Congress, where she was also one of the speakers. Ann gave the content of her presentation there to the Whippet Breed Council. It is currently in booklet form and used as an educational device for trainee whippet judges.

Since 2007 Ann has been involved with the education of future judges at whippet seminars, as a mentor, assessor and as the main speaker. She served as both Secretary and Chairman of the Whippet Breed Council and is currently Vice Chair. She is also on the committee of the Miniature Dachshund Club.

She was delighted to be invited and looks forward to the opportunity to have hands on the Greyhounds and Deerhounds.

Meet the judge - Sarah Porter who is judging Beagles at the forthcoming SYHS open show Sunday 14th July 24 at Hillstown Village Hall near Bolsover.

Sarah’s love of dogs steered her towards following a path as a canine Myotherapist, qualifying in 2021. Sarah particularly works with arthritic dogs or dogs that have muscular issues that result in compensatory problems elsewhere in the body.

Sarah was first introduced to Beagles around 2000 but it wasn't until 2012 when she got her first family dog. Sarah was happy to be just a regular dog owner but over the years has introduced more Beagles to her home and latterly a Black and Tan Coonhound.

After Yoda, the first Beagle, came Maybel from the Butterow Kennels. Maybel was to be Sarahs first show girl, but she didn’t like showing, subsequently she started to then show her daughter.

Sarah is a committee member of the NMCBC and has a keen interest in Beagles and the show scene.

She has passed all required seminars, stewarding and attended a breed appreciation day (BAD) and passed the multiple-choice examination (MCE) on Beagles.

Sarah was delighted to be asked to judge at South Yorkshire Hound Society, it will be her second judging appointment.

Meet the Judge - Kevin Young is judging Bloodhounds, Cirneco Dell'Etna and Rhodesian Ridgebacks at the forthcoming SYHS open show held on Sunday 14th July at Hillstown Village Hall near Bolsover.

Kevin is currently approved to award CCs in four Hound Breeds and in total is approved to award CCs in 46 Breeds within the Pastoral and Working Groups. He has judged in 22 countries and is a serving member of the Scottish Kennel Club Executive.

Kevin has been most successful in Bearded Collie’s making up several Champions under the Sunkap affix.

Hounds are a passion and Kevin and he has a great interest in them. Kevin is very much looking forward to his appointment and has said it is a pleasure to be invited to judge at SYHS.

Meet the judge - Lilly O’Brien who will judge BGV Petit and Grand classes sponsored and supported by the BGV club of GB, Junior Handling classes sponsored by West Riding Dachshund Association and Adult Handling classes at our forthcoming Open Show Sunday 14th July 2024 at Hillstown Village Hall near Bolsover.

Lilly has had dogs all her life and began showing and competing in junior handling at the age of 9 years old.

Lilly has shown all over the UK with a variety of different breeds and has owned and handled her own dogs winning multiples CC’s across different breeds. In 2023, Lilly was awarded BIS at the BGV of GB club championship show handling a Petit. Lilly bred her first champion at 18 years old under the Susu affix and has recently made up her first champion.

Petits have been part of Lilly’s life since she was young and this lead to her falling in love with the Grands which she has owned and exhibited for the last six years.

Lilly is also an established and successful junior handler having competed and won in both JHA and YKC classes and stakes. She won the 12-17 YKC Utility handling at Crufts.

She is really looking forward to this appointment and thanks the committee for inviting her.

Please come and support Lilly, without people like her there is no future in the breeds and dog showing. SYHS is very pleased to have Lilly judge for us as she is the next generation of our future judges.

Introducing Dianne Reid who is judging Afghan Hounds, Basenji, Bavarian Mountain Hound, Borzoi and AV Hound at our forthcoming open show Sunday 14th July 2024 at Hillstown Village Hall, Bolsover.

Dianne grew up in the North of Scotland with Miniature Long Haired Dachshunds under the Maudaxi affix. At the earliest opportunity a PBGV puppy came along and over 20 years later Dianne has bred and or owned 10 Champions in the breed plus an Irish Champion GBGV and Multi Champion Griffon Fauve de Bretagne.

With a passion for hounds it is no surprise that some Standard Long Haired Dachshunds have been welcomed at the kennel in recent years. Dianne awards CCs in PBGVs, is passed to award CCs in GBGVs and has her first CC appointment at Bath for Basset Fauve de Bretagne. Over the years admiration of some of the great sighthounds in the showring has led to Dianne learning about other hound breeds like Afghans and Basenjis.

South Yorkshire Hound Society is one of my favourite shows of the year and the society afforded me my first opportunity to judge PBGVs, GBGVs and Basset Fauve de Bretagne many years ago.

When opportunity allows it is often on the show calendar and I am really honoured to be invited to judge some fabulous hound breeds and stakes and look forward to an enjoyable day.

SYHS are pleased to announce our Best In Show judge for our forthcoming Open Show held at Hillstown Village Hall on Sunday 14th July.

Best In Show Judge- Dianna Spavin (Dialynne)

Dianna was born into the world of dogs, Dianna's mother Marion Spavin started the world famous Dialynne Beagle kennel in 1958. Dianna together with her daughter Melanie, the 3rd generation, have produced over 100 champions in Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Min Schnauzers, Tibetan Terrier and Australian Shepherds. The Tibetan Terrier Ch Araki Ti**le Winkle of Dialynne became the youngest Ch in the breed at the age of 12 months and 13 days. In 2017, their Beagle Ch Dialynne Peter Piper won 3rd Best In Show at the World Show in Germany. Dianna has had a varied life working mostly with animals. At the age of 16, she started working with guard dogs, then at a riding school and from there went to work in hunt stables. She came home and started her own successful grooming parlour which she ran for 25 years. In 1989, the family moved to Solihull buying the late Ron Bradbury's Boarding kennels. Dianna started judging in the early 1970's and now awards CC's in over 60 breeds. Dianna judges the Hound, Toy, Utility and Pastoral groups judging her first Best In Show at Bath Ch Show 2009.

We are very excited to have Dianna officiate at our 2024 show.
