Thefts of Gundog Breeds.
Owners of Gundog breeds such as Labradors and especially Springer and Cocker Spaniels are being warned to be careful with their dogs as the numbers of thefts of these breeds in particular, have risen enormously . Covid 19 is being given as the reason for the scarcity of these breeds for use as working dogs or as brood bi***es.
The numbers of reported thefts of these breeds from gamekeepers and professional kennels are on the increase. As security is increased by these professional dog owners it is feared that pet dogs of these breeds will become a target.
Owners of working dogs who tend to keep their dogs in kennels are being advised to upgrade their security. Pet owners of these breeds are being advised to be especially vigilant to prevent their theft.
Points to remember:
• Do NOT leave dogs unattended outside shops.
• Be aware of strangers paying excessive attention to your dog when out on walks.
• Keep an eye on your dog when it’s in the garden and make sure fences and gates are secure and in good repair
• Be aware of any strange markings that may appear on doors or fences as this could be a sign that the property is being watched and has been marked as having dogs suitable for stealing.
• Don’t let your dog sit at the window in view of passers-by
• Don’t leave your dog alone in the car.
• Take photographs of your dog from different angles to help prove ownership
• Train your dog to come back to you when called, or keep it on a lead if in doubt
• Ensure that microchip details are up to date.
If your dog should go missing:
• Use social media to make it public.
• Use the dogslost web site
• Contact Police, dog warden, local dog rescues, vets, pet shops and micro chip data base.
• Post notices in the area complete with pictures.
• By highlighting the theft it may make the dog “Too hot to handle”.
Dogs thefts of all, not just Gundog breeds, are on the increase. We must all remain vigilant to prevent it happening…..Bob.
