Art by Elizabeth de Broise Fine Art, Prints, Pet portrait commissions My practice is informed by a fascination with the human/dog relationship and a lifelong love of drawing.
(8)

Inspired by realism and figurative art and the satisfaction of recreating subjects on paper, I aim to capture images from life, true to life, and work mostly with colour pencil to achieve this. I believe the process of creating is as important as the final outcome, and I usually render pieces in small sections, enabling me to give equal attention to every detail. My portfolio largely consists of c

ustom pet portrait commissions, alongside project work driven by a desire to celebrate the many ways in which dogs enrich people’s lives. I am particularly intrigued by the unique nature of the human/dog relationship and the various roles dogs play in society. My work has recently shifted from formal portraits to scenes portraying interactions between owner and pet, an unspoken connection that I feel lends itself to representation through visual art. I am based in Leeds where I work from my home around my job and family. I have exhibited my work in group exhibitions and taken part in art trails for a number of years. I am a member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society and a graduate of Wimbledon College of Art. I found my specialism when I brought my dog, Lucas, home. I have always adored dogs and I found myself compelled to draw him in an attempt to capture his character. These drawings sparked some interest and I have since completed around 200 pet portrait commissions from worldwide clients. With a background in visual storytelling, I have long held an interest in exploring narrative. In 2020 I decided to re-introduce a storytelling element into my work to investigate the different relationships people have with dogs and the roles dogs play in society, which became a project series called Tails to Tell.

Delighted to have been featured in the new artists book by .commercial

“Favourit is the seventh iteration of a submission-style publication by SU4IP. Showcasing the favourite works of thirty-two different artists, and focusing on works curated for their sentimental value or significance to the individuals responsible for their creation, rather than prestige, success, or commercial value.”

The book features my piece ‘A Stolen Moment’ as well as the first three pieces in my sleeping dogs collection, “The Pack”, “The Dreamer” and “The Snuggle” and I talk about my recent shift from commissions to focussing on creating work based on personal interest.

“The Snuggle”
Colour Pencil
A2 (42x59.4cm)

The third drawing in my sleeping dogs collection features the beautiful Robin. Robin is happiest having an afternoon nap on the sofa, with his legs up in the air and cosy blanket. He loves running around causing trouble so needs good naps to keep his energy levels up! Quite often he will be found curled up asleep with a shoe or other household object.

There were a few challenges in this piece - as well as there being lots of different colours and textures, most of the background was blurred with only Robin’s face and foreground in focus, which meant lots of blending and soft edges.

I love how dogs get attached to toys and objects, and I thoroughly enjoyed drawing Robin’s toy dinosaur!

I have two of my drawing process videos featuring in the online Deconstruction and Abstraction exhibition at from 23rd April to 7th May:

“Deconstruction and Abstraction is an exhibition exploring how artists deconstruct concepts and elements within their practice while investigating how abstraction intercepts into this.”

As an artist creating representational work this may seem like an odd selection, however, the videos demonstrate my process of deconstructing a reference image into small squares, which I then reproduce one at a time to reveal the full image. Whilst the finished drawing is representational, the process involves creating small abstract drawings that gradually piece together. This actually results in a more accurate representation of the reference photo as it enables me to give equal attention to every part of the drawing, focussing purely on the colour, shapes, and textures in each square rather than viewing it as part of a subject.

Current works in progress for my sleeping dogs collection. I started these at the same time and it’s pretty obvious which one is more time consuming! One square of the grass piece takes the same amount of time as 2 to 3 squares of the other!

“The Dreamer”
Colour pencil
A2 (42x59.4cm)

The second piece in my sleeping dogs collection was quite a different challenge. Once again drawn in 6x6cm squares, I resisted the temptation to use black paper as I wanted to continue filling the entire paper with colour pencil (surprisingly I only got through one black pencil!)

The beautiful model for this drawing is called Puzzle and he is an extra special boy. He has a natural affinity to know exactly how his owner feels and they have been through some difficult times together. Puzzle never leaves his owners side and they sleep together, often with Puzzle sticking his tongue out and sometimes upside where he enjoys a stroke.

It took me a while to come up with a title for this drawing, however, whilst reading up on the many reasons dogs sleep with their tongue poking out I discovered that one reason is that they are dreaming. During REM sleep the tongue will often poke out, often accompanied by digging or running paws and a few sleepy woofs, as this is the dream stage of sleep.

I’ve been slowly easing back into drawing after a break over Christmas. One of my goals for this year is to sketch every day, filling a sketchbook each month. As my drawings are usually highly detailed and reproduced from photos, I want to practice more quick observational drawing from life, and thankfully I have my very own dog life model to help!

Sketchbook pages 1st-7th January:

1st - Lucas on my legs, pen
2nd & 3rd - paw detail & asleep on bed, pen
4th - two of the best things in life (dogs and books), pen
5th - furious Lucas in the dognut, pen & watercolour pen
6th - quick ten second drawings without looking at the paper
7th - light & shade, pen & colour pencil on grey paper

Thank you to everyone who has supported my creative endeavours in 2023, just looking back on my original goals for the year and it didn’t go in the direction I planned but that ended up making it better!

✨2023 Highlights✨

> 16 pet portrait commissions and reaching the 200 commissions mark!

> 4 non-commission pieces completed, developing my personal interests and style and leading to…

> 7 group exhibitions in galleries, 3 online group exhibitions and being long-listed for 2 awards!

✨2024 Goals✨

> Sketch every day

> Make two collections of work - hopefully with a small solo exhibit 🤞

> Sharing my skills through workshops and online tutorials - this has been on my goals list for years as it scares me, but this year is the year!

> Enjoy what I’m currently doing instead of future planning!

🎉Happy New Year!🎉

Process video for my new drawing “The Pack”

I really love this method of drawing in small sections for many reasons:

• it makes working on a larger piece (this is A2) less overwhelming as I’m just focusing on one area at a time

• I give the same level of detail to every centimetre of the drawing instead of losing patience with less interesting areas, as a result the finished drawings are more accurate

• I love playing with the relationship between the abstract and the representational and seeing these little abstract drawings gradually reveal a full realistic image

Onto the next drawing in my sleeping dogs collection in the New Year. I’ll be using this method again but which direction should I draw in? Vertically, horizontally, snaking up and down or side to side, spiralling, or completing squares at random?

“The Pack”
Colour pencil
A2 (42x59.4cm)

The first drawing in my sleeping dogs collection features Whippets Kira, Zana & Gibbs, and was completed in individual 6x6cm squares (process video coming soon!)

I wanted to have an example of pack sleeping within the collection as it demonstrates a lovely balance of protection, trust and vulnerability. I loved the composition of this image with the long entangled limbs, as well as the strong lighting.

After reading the dogs back story from their owner I really felt that I could see each of their personalities in this image - check out the comments for more info on each dog and their sleeping habits to see if you agree!

A big thank you to Kira, Zana and Gibbs’ owner who kindly let me draw these beautiful dogs.

Elizabeth de Broise

I am an animal portrait artist based in Leeds. The main focus of my practice is custom pet portraits, inspired by the special bond we share with our pets and a desire to celebrate this relationship through art. A pet portrait is the perfect way to honour a beloved companion, give a very personal gift, or to remember an old friend. I drew my own dog Lucas (my muse, mascot, and 85% good boy) for the first time back in 2015 and this has since led to over 150 pet portrait commissions from the UK, Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada and the USA. I work in a realistic style, usually in colour pencil, as I have always found the challenge of recreating subjects true to life on paper incredibly satisfying, and I aim to capture the unique personality and characteristics of each pet I draw. I sell portraits through my portrait shop and have a limited number of slots available each month.

After graduating from Wimbledon College of Art in 2010 with a BA (Hons) in Design for Performance, I spent a few years exploring scenic art, filmmaking and stop motion animation before returning to what I have always enjoyed the most, drawing, and combined this with my love of animals. With a background in visual storytelling, I am keen to use my portraiture to tell the tales of inspirational pets, with a particular interest in the varied roles that dogs play in today’s society. My current work is focussed mainly on the role of the pet, however, to many people a companion animal is so much more than this. I am about to embark on a sketchbook project that explores this theme and will tell stories of incredible dogs alongside their portraits; also giving me the opportunity to explore different materials and techniques. If you own a working dog, or a dog who has done something amazing and you would like to include their story in my sketchbook, just get in touch via [email protected]

I also run a charity offer - for anyone ordering a portrait of an assistance dog I will donate 10% of the sale price to Dogs for Good, who provide assistance dogs for adults and children with a range of disabilities to help them live independent lives, just let me know if your dog is an assistance dog when ordering.

In addition to my pet portrait work, I also have a small range of wildlife art prints and cards inspired by animal characters from classic children’s literature; the originals were drawn for my daughter’s nursery. These are drawn in a realistic style that will appeal to both adults and children and can be mixed and matched to create character sets, habitat sets, or sets of your favourite animals. All prints and cards can be purchased from my Etsy shop, or one of my upcoming events.
