💚💙 What is a Catahoula Leopard Dog? 💚💙

This breed of dog is relatively new to Australia, arriving in the 1970s, but was created in the Catahoula Parish of Louisiana, USA in the 1700s, bred for the purpose of herding livestock and hunting raccoons, feral pigs, squirrels etc. One interesting fact, despite their size, they can climb trees!

They became more popular in QLD, NSW and WA hunting feral pigs and deer and were used for the same purpose as bull arabs.

💚💙 What do Catahoulas look like? 💚💙

In one word... stunning! They often have coloured eyes blue or gold and their coat is usually merle (a lighter coat with darker splotches) quite striking, hence the name of Leopard Dog. They are a medium to large athletic type dog that has a hound history with long legs.

💚💙 Why are they becoming more popular in Victoria now? 💚💙
As rescue groups bring dogs down from NSW and Qld pounds to Victoria, Catahoula or Catahoula xs are often waiting to be rehomed.

💚💙 What is their temperament like? 💚💙

Catahoula Leopard Dogs make wonderful family dogs and get on well with other dogs and animals. They can have a higher prey drive and rehoming with cats should be undertaken with supervision.
They should only be rehomed to confident owners as they do require leadership and boundaries.

Introduction into our Catahoula journey
We purchased our first Catahoula in 2015
He was a cross breed and he is what made us fall in love with the breed.
Jock was a such a great dog but what amazed us was the love he had for our family and especially our nephews. We knew this breed was what we where searching for so we began looking.
We came across WA Catahoulas sadly their female passed away which meant back to searching and we came across Fair Mate Catahoulas
We got our beautiful girl Frankie from Danielle & Sam in August 2016.
Frankie is an amazing dog she was a pleasure to train and is a very easy going dog. We took her out hunting around 6 months old and she took to it straight away. Still to this day she is happy to go out and work but also come home and switch off
We then came across the LJ’s Litter where we got our beautiful Trevor in December 2016
Trevor was our eye opener to this breed, we experienced something completely new he didn’t take to strangers or new dogs. Had hidden anger and an over drive of energy that we had to learn to help him use. He was a hard hunter and caught his first pig at 7 months old. Sadly we lost Trevor just after he turned 2.
Clyde then joined us in March 2020

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a multi-purpose working dog that is well-muscled and powerful, but with a sense of agility and endurance. They are serious while working and playful at home. The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a medium-large, short-coated dog, known for its many varied coat and eye colors and patterns. The word is of Choctaw origin and is translated to mean "sacred lake." Catahoulas are the only breed of dog to have historically originated in the state of Louisiana. The breed requires firm guidance and early socialization, as they can be independent, territorial, and protective. For the same reasons, they do not allow mistreatment and will assert themselves in self-defense. Once they know their place in the family unit, they are affectionate, loyal, and gentle. Also called the Catahoula Hog Dog, they are used as stock dogs, bay dogs, tree dogs, watchdogs, guard dogs, and of course as loyal companions.
