Global Cat Day is TODAY October 16. This day is aimed at increasing awareness surrounding non-lethal feline programs across the country. Veterinarians to shelter staff to advocates, all play a part in saving cats’ lives.
For the last 13 years Hands Helping Paws' volunteers have dramatically reduced the number of cats and kittens living on the streets and entering the shelter system. We have done this with our TNR (trap neuter and return) efforts which in turn has contributed to the over 90% live release rate at our shelter. The citizens wanted a "no-kill" shelter and we are proud to say that we contributed to the goal of a no-kill shelter since 2007. The first year the shelter achieved a live release rate of over 90 percent was in 2017.
What is TNR: On a community level, Trap Neuter Return reduces cat populations and nuisance complaints when resources, including trappers, spay/neuter surgeries and outreach, are focused on targeted sections of the community.
Many thanks to our supporters who donate toward our programs and have played a huge role in saving lives. We could not do these life saving initiatives without your support.
Note: Global Cat Day was once called National Feral Cat Day.
But the movement to protect and improve cats’ lives spans every country. Hence the name change.
