My name is Hannelie Le Roux and I’m a Dog Trainer working in Houston Texas. I have two beautiful fur babies myself - Bindi is the older one she is a 5 yrs old Border Collie that joined our family in Australia and she came with us to Texas when we moved. She is of course clever and quick and a lot of fun to work with. She is also a little overly vigilant, hmmm wonder why and can be shy, cautious a

nd noise sensitive. My second child is Bertie, a Corgi that we got from a wonderful breeder here in Texas, he is the loud, pushy funny one in the family and gets away with murder due to his considerable amount of cuteness. He is super driven to work and train, however he too has a little struggle. It was apparent from day one that he was a resource guarder and didn’t like things being taken away. Working with Bindi and Bert to overcome their struggles and all the dogs I have had through the years before them has taught me a lot, it drove me to keep learning and finding the best and latest methods to help my dogs and dogs of my clients. I realised about 9 years ago that this was my passion I wanted to work with people and their dogs. Helping people understand their dogs and puppies better so they can have the best relationships possible and have their dog owning journey be all they want it to be. I completed a 1 year course at local College in Australia and did the Industry Accredited Dog trainer course and the Pro Dog Trainer course through Absolute Dogs UK. I am constantly doing various courses to further my knowledge and stay up to date. EVERYTHING in your dog’s world could be good or bad, friendly or scary, depending on their level of optimism. If your dog is worried or startled by new things in their environment and reacts towards them either actively (barking, lunging, pulling on leash) or passively (freezing, staring at the distraction, trying to hide behind you) – they need an injection of optimism!

Struggles with potty training, check out the tips below! For all things puppy, call Hannelie 281 665 0945. I'm passionate about helping people get their journey and relationship with their puppies started the right way! Helping you to grow a calm, confident puppy and dog.
(I'm an Absolute Dogs certified Pro Dog Trainer. Also AKC certified CGC evaluator).

It is never too early to start potty training your puppy when they come home. In fact, being consistent within the first couple of weeks is vital. What are some ways you can create a less stressful, toilet training experience for both yourself and your puppy?

TIP #1
Make sure that your puppy cannot go off anywhere out of sight so that you can watch for “I need to go” behaviours such as circling, excessive sniffing, sudden disinterest in play with you or their toys, and more.

TIP #2
Take your puppy out frequently, especially after naps, 10-15 minutes of active play, 30-45 minutes of restful chewing or playing with toys quietly, 15-20 minutes after eating, and after any consistent intake of water.

TIP #3
Never restrict your puppy access to water. Instead, make sure water is freely available as restriction can lead to a UTI or dehydration. Keep an eye on your pup’s water intake. If your puppy is very thirsty and peeing frequently, have your puppy checked out for any underlying medical conditions that might prevent potty training success.

TIP #4
Put your puppy’s pottying on cue. You will start to recognise when your puppy is going to need to go, so just as you place them down and when you expect them to go, say the cue you want to use “Hurry Up”, for example. Repeat until they go and then reward AFTER they’ve finished toileting so that you don’t interrupt it and they end up going again once inside (that’s no fun!).

TIP #5
Vary the surface you have your puppy potty on. You never know where life will lead you and it can be such a useful skill for a dog to be able to go no matter what surface (i.e. gravel, grass, peastone, concrete, etc.)

How reliable is your dog's recall, can you let your dog off-leash to experience the joy of running in big open spaces! Playing 3min simple, fun games will give you a recall that is joyful and reliable. ❄️🐾❄️

Let’s work on the concept of self control. Copper likes to jump and grab at food. So we play airplane game. Slowly bring the food down then deliver to their mouth. If they jump up or grab, take your hand back up and start again. At first you will have to make it quick so as not to frustrate your puppy, but over a couple of days and weeks you can gradually slow it down. Let the games begin!!!!

#puppyplaytime

Touch is a wonderful game to get focus and attention on you in a distracting environment. Plus it teaches your dog to value your hand target allowing you to manipulate their movements in other games. But most of all dogs love it, so it’s going to pay hugely into your relationship bank account with your dog. Use your dogs dinner and let the games begin.

This game grows OPTIMISM!! Our dogs are genetically predisposed to be pessimistic. Let me explain - a dog is walking along in the "wilds" and sees a bush shaking, he thinks that there might be a Bear behind that bush and turns around, he lives another day! His pessimistic view of the bush is appropriate in the "wild" to keep him alive. If he were to think, that the bush is shaking and there's nothing to worry about, he could end up dinner!!! Now dogs live in houses with humans and no Bears to worry about but they can still be pessimistic about that bush (anything novel, in the environment). This is no longer appropriate, for the most part and we want to train their brains to be more OPTIMISTIC. PLAY THESE GAMES TO HAVE A DOG THAT TAKES EVERYTHING IN THEIR STRIDE.

With our move to Houston it took a while to get settled and sort out all the legal stuff but I’ve recently been able to launch my own business and am excited to see what the future holds for Dotty Dogs in Texas. I offer, 1-2-1 training consults, online or in person. As the situation changes with the Corona virus that has us all locked down right now, I will expand to group classes and workshops too.
