❤️Queen❤️, is approx 4 months old and 13lbs. She is playful, affectionate, and spunky. She also appears crate trained and is working on house breaking. Great with other dogs, follows directions well from adults, shares everything, and doesn't care at all about cats, this girl would make a great addition to any family.

Apply to adopt Queen at lcarescue.org!

It's Senior Sunday and Rocky is still waiting for a family to come along! Rocky is 14 years old, and only 18 pounds. He still plays and loves to go for walks, and enjoys a good snuggle session! Everyone passes him by, saying "it would be too hard" to take on a senior dog, but imagine how hard it is for him to be passed by every day! If you're able to give this little man a comfy and loving home in his golden years, apply today!

TO BE EUTHANIZED IN NYC—MEDICAL NEEDS

Date of Intake: 11-Dec-2024

Underweight, dehydrated and with a re**al prolapse, little girl RIZZO was brought in from Ridgewood. She immediately had repair of the prolapse and needs a loving home in which to recover, to continue her vet visits, and start to her new life. Please message our group page if you are interested in helping this dear little girl out.

RIZZO 216475, 5 years old, 9 lbs., female
Queens ACC, small mixed breed, brown/white
Owner surrender reason: date of intake: 11-Dec-2024, stray/brought in by agency.
Behavior Assessment Rating: New Hope only
Place with a New Hope rescue
No children under 13
Medical Behavior: growling, tense, soft muzzle placed as precaution

AT RISK MEMO:

Rizzo is on the at-risk list for medical reasons. Rizzo is an underweight dog that came in with a re**al prolapse and it was replaced, but she has continued to have constipation and difficulty defecating with the purse-string suture in place. She will need continued vet visits and medication to keep her defecating normally.Rizzo arrived at the QUACC by the police and in care has been intensely fearful. Rizzo has escalated to snapping/growling with staff during interactions and due to her medical condition is very uncomfortable. As a result, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

INTAKE NOTES—Date of Intake: 11-Dec-2024

Rizzo was barking in the officers’ car and the officer was able to place the crate on a cart; once in the hallway she was easily leashed and walked out of the crate on her own. She walked to her kennel without issue.

OWNER SURRENDER NOTES—BASIC INFORMATION

Brought in by agency from Myrtle Ave. at Forest Ave. in Ridgewood 11385.

BEHAVIOR NOTES:

Date of Intake: 11-Dec-2024
Spay/neuter status: no
Means of surrender: Length of time in previous home: no known history

SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES: Date of Assessment: 15-Dec-2024

** UNABLE TO CONDUCT AT THIS TIME DUE TO MEDICAL CONCERNS **

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
Summary (7): 12/15/24: Rizzo is lying in the middle of kennel with a slightly trembling body as handler approaches. She readily eats pieces of sausage offered through kennel door. Handler slowly opens kennel door, and Rizzo takes sausages gently from hand. She begins sitting up, trembling lightly as she does so. After feeding her treats and talking to Rizzo for several minutes, handler reaches to lightly pet her side, and she barks and snaps at their hand. Handler offers a few more treats before closing the kennel door and exiting.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR
Date of intake:: 12/11/2024
Summary: barking in the officers car and the officer was able to place the crate on a cart

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR
Date of initial: 12/11/2024
Summary: growling, tense, soft muzzle placed as precaution

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Rizzo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13): Due to Rizzo's fearfulness, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Rizzo's fearfulness, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Rizzo gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and chooses to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity. However, if prevented from moving away, there is potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Rizzo, build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and allow her to initiate interactions with new people. SHe should never be forced to greet or interact if she is not comfortable or soliciting attention. Rizzo would thrive in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given ample time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression.

TWYLA 211916, Little, shy girl https://youtu.be/k-wZgz7PP0U

AT RISK MEMO:

Twyla is at risk for behavior reasons. Twyla is highly fearful of new people. She has escalated to biting in the past. Twyla gives clear warning when uncomfortable. She will require a proper decompression period in an adult-only, experienced home. Medically, she has been treated for otitis externa but is otherwise healthy.

Twyla is looking for a patient, understanding home. While she's initially fearful and can feel threatened by unfamiliar people or situations (she has escalated to biting in the past), Twyla is reported to be affectionate once she's comfortable. Twyla is a smart pup and knows several cues, making her both obedient and eager to please. One of her absolute favorite activities is playing fetch—she is said to play fetch with anything! Twyla would thrive best in an adult-only home with experienced dog handlers who can provide her with a calm environment and help her build confidence.

INTAKE NOTES—Date of Intake: 23-Oct-2024

OWNER SURRENDER NOTES—BASIC INFORMATION

Twyla is a medium, spayed female, black, dog who was purchased and lived with her owner for 4 years. Around strangers, she was shy. But she lived with 3 children ages 6, 12 and 14 with whom she was playful and outgoing, as she was with familiar dogs. Twyla hard barks or growls at unfamiliar dogs and has no experience with cats. She is fully house trained, (crate trained for 6 hours), going to the bathroom outside. She had access to a yard and also went for short walks during which she pulled only mild to moderately. When outside on walks she barks and growls at strangers that approached family members. She isn’t bothered by much but gets anxious when left alone, and barks or growls when restrained. Twyla lets her family bathe and brush her and knows several cues. Overall she is a social and affectionate girl who prefers contact on her own terms. Her owner’s favorite thing was how calm and affectionate Twyla is with familiar people. Twyla’s favorite activity is playing fetch. She was fed dry Science brand food. Twyla has previously bitten a person. Please see “bite history.”

SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES: Date of Assessment: 27-Oct-2024

Summary:
Twyla has had 3 previous bite incidents and is highly fearful in care. She is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

PLAYGROUP SUMMARIES: DOG TO DOG:

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

Summary (1):: Twyla is described as social and affectionate. She prefers contact on her own terms and can be a couch potato. She spends most of her time where the people are or in her own crate. She allows the owner to bathe and brush her. She is crate trained and does well up to 6 hours. She is nervous getting into the car, but once inside she does fine. She knows the cues down (lay down), go rest (go to crate), come, ready (sit), followed by go (fetch). Her owner's favorite thing about her is she is calm and affectionate with things and people which she is familiar with. Her favorite activity is playing fetch.

Summary (7):: 10/28: On approach, Twyla considers hiding in the corner from the handler but when coaxed forward she stays in the center of her kennel. She is easily leashed and walks out on her own. She is brought on a walk up the block. She begins to pull away from barking dogs and is taken on an alternate route to avoid the noise. She allows to be clipped and returns without issue.

10/27: Twyla backs into the corner, facing the wall and growls. She remains still as the lead is secured over her and walks out on her own. She is brought on a walk and has a neutral body, walking nicely on leash. When she hears the dogs barking from outside, she panics and attempts to flee. She is coaxed along and jumps into her kennel on her own. She is seen snuggled up in her bed post walk.

10/25: Twyla is at the back of her kennel as staff approaches. She has tense posture, shaking slightly, and wide eyes. Staff speaks to her in soft tones and slowly attempts to rope her. Twyla evades the leash, backing away into the corner of her kennel and turning her head, evading contact. Once she is finally roped, Twyla walks cautiously out to the yard with staff, stopping often. She is kept on leash and walks around, sniffing. Twyla's body language remains tense and staff does not attempt to pet her at this time. Upon return, Twyla goes directly into her kennel and cowers slightly in the corner, ducking her head low. Treats are offered, but she does not eat them immediately. Music is turned on in the room as enrichment and Twyla is left to decompress and not cause further FAS.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of Intake: 23-Oct-2024

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of Initial: 23-Oct-2024
Summary: very tense but allowed all handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only

Recommendations:
No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:
No children (under 13): Due to multiple bite incidents, we recommend an adult only home.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Twyla be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Twyla to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Twyla to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Twyla presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges:
Handling/touch sensitivity
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression
Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:
Handling/touch sensitivity: Twyla has bitten before when an unfamiliar person attempted to pet her before she was comfortable. She will bark and growl when being held or restrained. All interactions should be at her own pace. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity.

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Twyla is fearful of new people and places. She gives clear warning when uncomfortable but if ignored, she will escalate to biting. She requires a slow, considerate approach with someone familiar with dog body language. It is important to move slowly with Twyla, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Twyla to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression.

Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Twyla has 3 previous bite incidents. Because this is a learned behavior, she is likely to repeat this if she is in a situation which she is not comfortable. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.

Anxiety: Her owner described her as an anxious dog, but did not give details on how the anxiety manifested. If Twyla displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.

PUB is an absolutely stunning little girl who was found tied to a fence. She may need a little bit of time to warm up before showing off the sweet, cuddle bug she truly is. A bit overwhelmed by all that has happened to her, please help this delightful lady find a home where she is allowed to get used to her new life slowly so she feels safe. Then beware the doggy kisses she has to give! Fast movements and loud noises make Pub flinch, so a quiet home where children are age 13 or older will suit her best. If you have the patience to help Pub build her confidence, please message us today! With your TLC, you are going to find she is a fantastic family member!

Potential challenges:
Handling/touch sensitivity
Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:
Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- During intake, the Pub was very tense and snapped when attempts were made to remove her collar. However, she allowed other forms of petting. During the handling assessment, she flinched at fast movements and displayed nervous body language, including whale eyes and lip licking. With a slow approach, she warmed up, licking the handler and offering her paw. Quick movements or loud noises may exacerbate Pub's anxiety, so a patient and understanding approach is recommended. Building trust and providing reassurance during interactions can help Pub feel more secure and comfortable in her environment. With time and consistent positive experiences, Pub may become more confident and less reactive to sudden stimuli. *** PLACED WITH RESCUE ***

SNOW is an adorable little girl who is being surrendered due to her owner’s allergies. Her previous owner tells us that she loves going for walks and for car rides. SNOW has no experience with cats and dislikes other dogs of all sizes. In her most current home she lived with children ages 8, 3 and 1 with whom she was tolerant. Snow has been friendly from the start at the shelter, making friends with all sizes of other dogs despite her owner’s reports. A staff member calls her “the sweetest!” Please consider this cutie, and PRIVATE MESSAGE our page to possibly add her to your family.

SNOW 207801, 11 years old, 14 lbs., spayed female
Staten Island ACC, small mixed breed, white
Owner Surrender Reason: Date of Intake: 14-Sep-2024–Owner’s allergies
Behavior Assessment Rating: TBD
Medical Behavior Rating: Green

INTAKE NOTES—Date of Intake: 14-Sep-2024

OWNER SURRENDER NOTES—BASIC INFORMATION

Snow is an 11 year old, spayed female who has lived for 4 years with her owner and is being surrendered due to her owner’s allergies. The owner found her 4 years ago.

Snow previously lived with adults and 3 children (ages: 8,3, & 1 y/o). She was tolerant around children, alert barks around strangers, and has no experience around cats. She hard barks and growls at familiar and unfamiliar dogs, when on leash or off.

Snow has no bite history. She has a history of resource guarding food treats and random objects and will snap or attempt to bite. She is partially house trained and goes outside and on weekends wee pads which she very rarely misses. She went on 1 or 2 walks a day for 10 minutes and pulls very little on the leash. She has never been crated. When out on walks, she reacts to strangers who approach the home/yard, you/family members, and all sizes of dogs by growling or hard barking.

Snow isn’t bothered by much, but she barks a lot. She last saw a vet in May-2023 and has no medical concerns. She allows her family to bathe and groom her. She has a low energy level and can be described as a couch potato.

Snow’s favorite things are going for walks and car rides. Her owner’s favorite thing about her is that she’s very calm. She knows the cue for “sit” and was fed Blue Buffalo dry food.
