Part two of Lox and Bagel’s story:
First and foremost, as we were loading up the dogs into the car, a woman pulled up. She told us she had been feeding them for a long time and was trying to get them caught. She couldn’t believe we got them and was so happy for them. She confirmed they had lived on the street for a long time. This woman was the reason these dogs had enough trust in people for us to get close and we are so thankful for her!
Once we got the pups back to Charleston, we were able to get them straight into the vet. Lox was covered in wounds, and Bagel was struggling to walk.
We found out Lox was heartworm and Lyme positive - clear indicators he has been outside for a long time with no preventative care. His wounds smelled strongly of infection. We’re so glad we got him in to the vet so that he could immediately begin treatment for the wounds and for his two diagnoses.
Bagel on the other hand has us stumped. She appeared to be lame and disoriented. We worried she had physical trauma from an injury, but multiple radiographs showed that there was zero signs of trauma throughout her body and head. The only thing it did show was that she had been shot by buckshot - probably multiple times. We did bloodwork next to rule out other potential causes of her symptoms. The only abnormality we found were high white blood cells, meaning she likely has an infection somewhere. Infections can sometimes cause the symptoms she’s showing, so we got her on a strong antibiotic as well as an anti inflammatory. Because we still don’t have an exact diagnosis, she is on a 10 day quarantine.
Thanks to our bridge building, we were able to provide a safe haven for these two souls. The goal is for them to finish their 10 day quarantine before heading to foster homes. They’re both incredibly sweet and it’s obvious that they are feeling SO much better since starting their medications. They have made it clear that they are thankful for consistent food, shelter, and lots of love.
We have dropped a hefty amount on medical care for these two, but we’d do it all over again. You can help us continue to provide for them by making a donation in their honor:
