Training Tip Thursday: The benefit of knowing your route
Training Tip Thursday: Being aware on walks
Training Tip Thursday!
Training Tip Thursday: Practice recall often!
Yahtzee!
Yahtzee!
I recently wrapped up Puppy Perfection with Norm and his people and he did splendidly!
Over six weeks we worked on coming when called with his special word, Yahtzee, leaving stuff alone, puppy socialization, managing his nipping, greeting people politely, enjoying being brushed, going to his place, and so much more.
Adorable Norm is well on his way to a happy, harmonious life with his people!
(Note that normally we'd lavish a dog for coming with lots of treats but Norm had a bit of a stomachache, so he got one small piece of jerky.)
Some days we don’t have time to take a long walk into the woods behind our house. On those days, we have short sniff walks and play Find it games with Daisy. This gets her running back-and-forth, lets her use her nose to find kibble, and also practice coming back to me to target my hand. Learning never ends for our dogs and hand targeting is an easy behavior to learn and one we practice every day.

Training Tip Thursday: Let your dog(s) eat in peace!
This month I'll be getting into how to work on your dog's recall. First, here's what will *not* help your dog to learn to come:
> Chastising your dog for taking too long to come (but I get it ... that can be frustrating!)
> Not lavishing praise and treats on her no matter how long it takes for her to arrive (a slow response is information for you that you need to work on recall training in a less distracting environment or manage your dog around certain distractions)
> Saying the cue repeatedly, which teaches her to ignore it
> Increasing the degree of difficulty before your dog has mastered easier steps
> Using a collar that delivers a shock when your dog does not respond to you calling them
Another way to keep your dog's attention when off leash is to reward them every time they check in/look at you.
Today in the forest behind our house the walking was a little challenging/slippery (for me, thanks to last week's spring snowstorm). On days like today, we take a shorter walk but get in more running for the dogs by rewarding them (particularly Petey, who is distracted by everything in the forest) by having them to come back to us when they get a little ahead.
He's way ahead of me, barely visible in the video to start. Note that I'm not using their recall word here. I chirp a happy "Yes!" when they look in my direction, or even vaguely in my direction, and use my happy voice to encourage them. The happy voice has a long history of predicting treats (thanks, Pavlov) so the dogs come pretty quickly.
I ask Petey to touch my hand because he is the dog most likely to barrel directly into my legs.
